It’s simply because he fits in as if he’s one of their own. His look, his style, his form, the care he takes to fit in and get along with their celebs.
It’s the same in china. He just fits in, and he’s extra aware of culture and people response to that.
You know you’ve made it big if Japanese tabloids are willing to run scandals on you! – which has happened to JJ before lmao.
But joking aside, I agree with Akria but I think it might also have to do with individual activities. Sunao ni Narenakute allowed Jaejoong to reach a new audience.
And then there’s his friendships with J-artists and the fact that they back up that friendship on the news/with rumors. He’s friends with some notables (I’m thinking Yamapi and Junpei) and I think Ayumi Hamasaki is probably one of his most important connections. She’s very influential. The fact that he starred in her MV is notable.
but he was more popular there waaaay before he did that drama….even before his connections to those people came out.

Leaving all the other things as plus points……I think the REASON JJ is popular in Japan is he is a bishoujo boy….A Japanese anime/manga character who is a feminine beauty but male …..seems to have come to life. His looks are out of this world. And in China and internationally that is also probably the case.
JJ is blessed with looks that people like, but he is more than just his looks and that is why people get super attached to him. An he adapts to his surroundings really quickly.
For example, for me I got into THSK because of JJ’s looks. The first time I saw a picture of him and then decided to google him. I fell in love with his looks first, and then his voice and music, and then everything else.

Avex loved him and gave him many chances to show off himself than in SM b*shit. His fluency in Japanese also helped him to be the spokesman of THSK, you can see it in TSC concert in Tokyo Dome and other interviews. Sometimes I see JJ as the leader of THSK than YH due to their job assignment in public when they’re in Japan.
I love JJ the most, I always respect him because of his butt-hurt effort working to be from a less popular member to the most popular one in China, Japan and some East Asia Countries. I have no idea about other nations.
