Beautiful article featuring Junsu. He has his head on straight…
Through pain, I learned life.
Parting with TVXQ…
Challenge to be a Musical Actor…
Exclusive Interview with JYJ Kim Junsu
“I’ve come to learn that all problems stem from not making myself grow but rather being satisfied, saying “this much, should be okay.”
Group JYJ’s Kim Junsu, who is broadening his domain from idol star into a musical actor, opened up his heart in the interview with Focus Shinmum on the 11th, saying “I, too, am a human being before I am a singer.” He has conquered the wounds he endured through the separation process with TVXQ last year by immersing himself into the Musical “Mozart.” Following that, through the musical “Tears of Heaven,” he flowered once more as a musical actor “Kim Junsu.” He said: “I became a much stronger, mature man.” Many people know him as born on January 1 of 1987, but in truth he is born on the year of the Tiger, on December 15th of 1986, as a twin (his older brother is Zuno). He debuted as TVXQ when he was a 2nd year student in high school and now, he’s become a young man of 25.
“While singing the “I needed to learn” in the first scene of the 2nd act of Tears of Heaven, I felt moved at the thought that ‘such is life.’ A situation in which one needs to kill another person in order for myself to live, in order to live and to meet a person that I love, is not something that only happens in war.”
To Kim Junsu, musical is a teacher that teaches life. “Sadder than the fact that it is a society of competition in which one must fight with the other to win is the (fact that we have) circumstances in which one must learn how to push others down in order to survive with those methods.”
Junsu thought of the “good sportsmanship” (T/N: literally, “competition in good faith”) as a method to cure the social conditions like today that goads one to become angry and lose his temper.
“I wish that in our society will operate with the rule in which even if one loses, if the other person has such great qualities that I can accept it, that one humbly accepts the results.”
Kim Junsu’s principle (T/N: This is the same word that is used by Jaejoong when he describes his tattoo on his chest) is to try his best. (Junsu says that) it is because if he does so, even if it does not work out, he will be able to begin something new. When (the newspaper) asked whether he has had anything that he tried but would not work out, he said it was studying.
“In particular, math—as we finished the quadratic formula and moved on to trigonometry, I said: ‘Studying is something that even if one tries it just won’t work.’ (laugh)”
Kim Junsu is currently challenging himself at Popera. Time to time he is taking voice lessons (T/N: the article uses the word 성악 which is traditionally used to denote the kind of singing often done by opera actors). The transformation into a Popera singer from an idol dance singer is, to Junsu, as fervent as the task (T/N: literally, “homework”) that has been thrown on his twenties.
“The sensitivities that a song that is flavored by the (opera) voice is going to be different.”
(Junsu said that) in his thirties, he wishes to be a musician who writes songs. He said that he wants to be a composer who brings the thought of ‘I want to sing Kim Junsu’s song” when he is facing a certain situation.”
In Musical “Mozart” there is a song called “Golden Star.” It is—that you should break out of the tall walls of the castle and find the dream in the wide world and achieve it. In musicals, there are (naturally) parts which overlap with the lives of the audiences themselves and make them reflect upon themselves and bring them to tears. I will always protect you by your side, as an actor who, through musicals, comfort your lives and give you courage.”
Kim Junsu said that he wanted to become a singer who sings life, a musician who arouses memories and inspiration.

It’s good to hear from Junsu and learn what’s in his heart. He’s a great talent and he’ll go far in the industry. He seems happy now and I hope he stays that way forever.
I share @Rose thoughts. I really admire Junsu so much. As JJ, he is a hard worker and a truly talented singer. I love his voice and I love his passion for music. Junsu’s sensual cuteness makes me feel dizzy when I watch him dancing, moving his HOT hips to the rhythm. Junsu baby is full of surprises and his soul and his heart are crystal pure. ¡I LOVE YOU; JUNSU BABE!

Through pain, I learned life.
Dear Junsu
All then pain that you suffer will make you a man of insight and dignity. You will become stronger and able to face the world with eyes wide open. Facing such obstacle at a very young age, you grow matured very fast. And i am glad that you rose into such a fine young man with a very bright future. And i am glad you take all the challenges and turn it into positive way of life, and not being bitter and blame the world for it
One thing that i respect this fine human being that is called JYJ that they never bad mouth people around them 😉
Yes, I’m with you. Even if they’re expressing their pain and disappointments, they never say any derogatory terms to those people they once hold dear in their hearts. They just struggle to pick up the pieces and learn to stand again everytime they stumbled along the way.
@wanzhaf
Truly agreed. Who can wonder such dorky person can come out with such encouraging, smart words? He’s a fine person, Junsu is 🙂
Junsu is truly maturing into a wonderful man; some young lady is going to be extremely happy when they find each other. Hope true love finds you one day soon, Junsu;D
This what makes me love him more.. I really love his voice i hope i can listen to his singing and songs for very very long time.. And attending junsu’s musical becomes one of my dreams now..
Ah, Junsu!
You will sucess! ^___^
My Sweet Junsu!
I’m so happy JUNSU has matured & grown-up through his life experiences…
1) “This much should be okay”
2) He said that a society of competitions is a fight to win, in which circumstances, one has to push others down in order to survive…
3) “Competition is good faith” is a method to cure social conditions like today that goads someone to become angry & lose his temper….
4) Our society should operate with rules that even one loses, if the other person has such great qualities, then be HUMBLY to accept the results…
GOSH !!! how I loved those words & touched by them. These were the wise words from a young man of 25 years old….
SME & to those people who wants to harm JYJ, SHAME ON YOU !!!!
All JYJ wants is to be a singer who sings life, to compose good & beautiful songs, to bring joy & happiness to his Fans…Such a modest & wonderful thinking, please give them some RESPECTS….
I’m glad & happy JUNSU has moved on, just like JJ & YOOCHUN. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE & SUPPORT JYJ wholeheartedly & will always by their sides all the time…
JYJ & JYJ’s FAMILY HWAITING, CIA YOU & GANBATTE KUDAZAI!!!
‘a society of competitions is a fight to win, in which circumstances, one has to push others down in order to survive’….. really3 obvious!!! just like what homin and sm did 2 them..
ditto
A++++++++
Junsu, He growing very healthy and the future that he wants seems to be very clear for him.
I´m proud!
Maybe in JYJ, he is like the …calmer? one XD …
my dreamy soulmates… they are sometimes like flaying but I like them for that too XD
Go on Junsu! You are amazing!
gosh….Junsu is now a truly matured, grown man…i’m proudddddd
Love this interview.
Funny we have the same mind when it comes to things.
I hate studying and math but to tackle this
I got a major where I would need them both intensely XD lol. I still love music and arts, dancing more but science and math is not so bad either.
This sportsmanship, I remember referencing SM to use some of THAT cause they are totally out of line when it comes to ‘losing’. I agree on society too.
And growing. Sigh…so and I are so meant. I kid I kid…hope he finds someone who match his frequency.
My inspiration.
Su Su is awesome.
lol. me too. i love music and literature. i also like math but i hated science, especially physics in high school but surprise surprise! i’m finishing civil engineering now.
IA. sportsmanship, that’s what that company needs to acquire. jyj has gone through this lawsuit without insulting or bringing down any third party. on the other hand , sm artists who are totally not part of the conflict seems to have gone through great extents just to insult, malign, and ridicule the boys.
“I wish that in our society will operate with the rule in which even if one loses, if the other person has such great qualities that I can accept it, that one humbly accepts the results.”
YOU TELL THEM JUNSU!!!!!
people are only afraid when they know they cant win the competition. Show us fair game, and let the public decide.
I love how deep his interview is..but I’m not digging the mirotic hair junchan~~~~
“a singer who sings life” — I don’t know if that’s an accurate translation (always a problem) but I love this. It is a perfect description of what Junsu (and JYJ) does.
I can tell you that it is ^^…
“I’ve come to learn that all problems stem from not making myself grow but rather being satisfied, saying “this much, should be okay.”
–I have been struggling so much with this. Complacency. It is killing me.
“While singing the “I needed to learn” in the first scene of the 2nd act of Tears of Heaven, I felt moved at the thought that ‘such is life.’
–Yes, sometimes its when we are forced into a corner, that we grow fastest. Question is, how?
Thanks for this.
“I have been struggling so much with this. Complacency. It is killing me.”
“Yes, sometimes its when we are forced into a corner, that we grow fastest. Question is, how?”
Sorry, this reply is sort of pointless. I know this is an old post lol but I’ve just been going back through all the Junsu posts I’ve missed out on here at JYJ3..all the things that went on in his life.
This particular article really touched me and your comment..it was almost as if I had written it myself. So yeah..I’m just..really..it just really struck something in me.
“how”..I feel like these very last three years of my life have been the force that’s cornered me and yet, somehow, I’m still floundering around trying to figure that out. (I’m aware that this site is someplace I’ve allowed myself to get a little too personal..too open with my feelings or whatever. but I felt I wanted to reply..)
I guess I’m just saying thanks for this. (maybe I just felt that you could relate..)
As always..it’s Junsu who’s brought this to my attention, again. Roused these feelings..this knowing in me.
“I will always protect you by your side, as an actor who, through musicals, comfort your lives and give you courage.”
so much..always..you don’t even know.
i’m beginning to feel like i take too much from you (but what will i ever offer you?)
“a singer who sings life”
Your optimism..your will..that dignity that you–the way you live–seem to have silently pledged to claim for your life
Your whole existence screams that it would be a pity to continue wasting my own.
KIM JUNSU of JYJ, FIGHTING!!!
“Sadder than the fact that it is a society of competition in which one must fight with the other to win is the (fact that we have) circumstances in which one must learn how to push others down in order to survive with those methods.”
I love that quote and it made me sad for some reason. The fact that some people “who shall not be named” need to put JYJ down in order to make themselves relevant, feel more important, noticed etc is such a sad reality. Those people need to stay classy. They need to either butt out of the situation if it doesn’t concern them or if it does, don’t put others down.
There is a reason that I love Junsu and JYJ right from the beginning. They continually strive to grow, learn more and learn from their mistakes. They are humble as well. They are role models in their craft.
everything comes from the heart isn’t it, Junsu?
people often thought that he’s the most ambitious amongst the members, because he’s so competitive and perfectionist, but i think it’s the opposite.
he IS passionate about music and his works, but imo he’s surprisingly simple. i always thought that all he wants is to raise a family, keep doing what he loves (musicals etc), and ofc to play soccer lol that’s probably the #1 reason why he decided to get out from the company…
i still need that solo album tho >__< i hope he'll release one someday, imma keep waiting 🙂
maybe it’s just me, but for some reason i like that his interviews are always about his works, not his personal life ^^
ah…you’re right. that’s what I was thinking too.
he likes talking about his works rather than his personal life. he may be looks like a bit emotional but he’s the one who is the most rational/logic person.
his cute appearance is deceiving us. >.<
May I ask the meaning of this sentence?
“I’ve come to learn that all problems stem from not making myself grow but rather being satisfied, saying “this much, should be okay.”
Where is the close quotation mark of the first mark? Does the sentence mean “I’ve come to learn that all problems didn’t stem from making myself grow but rather being satisfied, saying “this much, should be okay””
Still don’t get it…hope you could explain a bit.
Sorry for my lack of English reading comprehensive. I’m struggling with lots of sentences here. ><
lol at first I thought the quotation wasn’t finished, but it was… so they probably just forgot the second quotation mark.
I don’t know if there’s a translation error or not, but written as it is, Junsu is basically saying that his problems come from being too relaxed, too complacent about his life/goals, and not from pushing himself too hard.
So saying “this much, should be okay” is not a good thing for Junsu. That saying has a defeatist tone because he’s not putting that much effort in his work, nor does it result in something spectacular(simply just “okay”).
I hope this makes sense, if not, someone here can probably explain better lol
@Jaime
I agree, to me he’s saying don’t accept the status quo, challenge yourself.
When you just stay where you are, life is going to hand you whatever it wants to. But if you keep on striving for bigger and better goals, you are no longer at life’s mercy. You will create your own destiny. To me that is a much worthier outlook on life. You become the master of your own fate.
All these young men are much wiser than they were given credit for. I’ve heard all these higher IQs being touted about for some people. But where is the common sense and the wisdom?
For me, this young man, Junsu, like his brothers, has his head held straight and his feet firmly planted on the ground. I am so proud of him. Good things are coming to you Kim Junsu.
@ButterfliesAreFree
Agree. & a higher IQ doesn’t necessarily make for a good heart either. Sometimes it makes for just the opposite.
will love the support you forever
Their experience after parting with SME has taught them a lot in life and has made them mature to real grown-up members of society. I admire how Junsu’s honesty evokes positivity instead of the usual bitterness that others may expect when talking about a painful past. How he is moving forward with his artistic endeavor how he is showing love for all that is good is truly a reflection of his spirit.
As a fan, I find this very inspiring. It drives me to become a better person and I owe it to JYJ.
Nodding my head & agreeing with every word lovely twin o’ mine.
^______^
Junsu…words of an artiste through and through…
just like Jaejoong
just like Yoochun
JYJ is not a boyband
is not a group band
is TOTALLY not an idol
JYJ is ARTISTE!!!
Junsu is amazing
as not to worship JYJ
They only talk about hope work
his heart and mind is love
that’s why always leaneth
“In musicals, there are (naturally) parts which overlap with the lives of the audiences themselves and make them reflect upon themselves and bring them to tears.”
Hear here!!
“I will always protect you by your side, as an actor who, through musicals, comfort your lives and give you courage.”
In order for the Arts to flourish and for the relationship between artist and the public to be a healthy one, it is likewise the duty of the audience to protect the actor’s place on the stage…to protect the territory (literal and metaphorical) that his craft needs to communicate and exhibit its value.
THIS.

im waiting you to comment this XD
¡MANY CLAPS; JIMMIE DEAR!
amen to that! *hugs jimmie-ah*
A sensible young man….
They have really grown up alot.
Junsoo is very strong ^^
and Junsu is only 25??
He is way mature than most man I know of at their 40’s
Good for you Junsu to have a good and level headed insight on life.. I think it is why JJ and Yoochun blends well is because their view of work, family, friends, love and life in general is almost the same.. and on the positive side of the boat.. which for a mature fan something we can relate to and sensible.. proud proud proud to be a JYJ supporter..
1st time to comment here but I’ve been a silent lurker for so long.
I’ve been a fan on DBSK since 2007. But I would say I really love the JYJ now. I think they are talented, deep and most of all men of great character. 🙂
at least he didnt bad mouth and actually said something that made sense….. i dont understand why some people still dont get it
Dont get what
The reason why i fall for Junsu is his characters, when i watched a variety show of TVXQ5 there was a scene where Junsu can control himself very well, i was so touched by that.
Talents are important, but i believe that Junsu’s self control makes it great.
I mustn’t have a bias, but i adore him naturally and so glad that he often makes me proud as his fan.
You are the music baby!!!!
I can clearly understand that Junsu is a passionate young man who does not conform to what was learned but breaks schemes in wanting to learn more and more, putting very clear goals in life. The, a connoisseur of natural talent takes to limit surprises us gratamente.Con that said, I think junsu covers her mouth to those who branded with negative adjectives, since all three were born to the art in its purest meaning, and not for easy money.
