SUPER COOL!
jae really could play a vampire..<3
vampire in twilight series……YES! someone in states….pls cast him! or perhaps an asian version of twilight series. (=^ェ^=)
vampire vampire Jae!
Ohhh I remember watching the “making” video and pics of this shoot a few months ago….
a very good article btw! “Asia’s most closely followed and voraciously consumed boyband…” true true!
That is a KILLER photograph.
Agree, they can also work this look. After seeing those fresh-faced Nii, Nature Republic, and Lotte JYJ pics, I am more than ready to see edgy JYJ next!!
@Jan
ME TOO. I loved the Nll pics, but I almost love this one more.
That’s one strange pic of Jae…haha!! Junsu and Yoochun look so adorable though…Jae! You look like someone’s choking your cat in front of you 😀
Hahaha 😀 agree with u…..:)
Jae looks stoned=D druggieJae!
Considering the audience, that might be an advantage.
hahaha…true! there was a Jaejoong macro that said “Drugged for your pleasure” xD
@Bluefyre
Trust me, if someone was choking your cat, that is SOOOOOO not how you’d look. Jae definitely doesn’t look homicidal there!
hahha… agree!
Great article it gave just enough info about them. Now I want to see some promoting here in the US about the concerts.. Has anyone seen anything about the concerts yet???
Damn, I love the headlines for this article! We should use it too….awesome =DD
Oh god I love the picture, it’s so Vogue/rolling stones. And I ditto that Jaejoong would trump Robert Pattison as the forever luscious and sexy vampire.
I love this article although it was too short to give a brief explanation of what the boys are really about. And I’m quite irritated by the last few sentences. Whoever was Jaejoong listening to? Date whoever you want, whenever you want, you need to have a partner or someone in your life. It’s part of what makes you an amazing musician/composer.. to be able to voice out your feelings in music.
p.s. I am hoping they don’t get to work with Kanye West again. I know he’s a big genius but he’s a douche. Working with Rodney promises a good future production.
Rodney Jerkins’ songs were my favorite on The Beginning! I’m still waiting for that Empty MV, JYJ.
@doublejaedee ‘JaelolliPOP’

I’m not a big Kanye fan either. The guys are. I’d sure love to know how much he charged them to produce the one song. I bet it was BIG CAKE. The Rodney songs, while they have grown on me and I like them now, I still think the tracks sound like a rough demo and the vocals sound like they were done hurriedly, concentrating mainly on their English pronunciation, with no time to really spend on overall polishing of their performances. Each of the guys have been recorded much better elsewhere in terms of the sound of their vocals, I think. I’m more interested in them working with Jae Chong again. He’s so great. Listen to the Aziatix song “Go.” Everything about it is great.
I concur.
I’ll be nicer to Jerkings though because it is not like he is an English teacher or something. Grasping the language (even just the pronunciation) can take time depending on who is learning. Junsu has definitely improved but look at the time it has taken him to do so. Jae….that sweetie…just no.
*Jerkins
He is a very intimidating looking guy.
@Mia2
” Grasping the language (even just the pronunciation) can take time depending on who is learning. Junsu has definitely improved but look at the time it has taken him to do so. Jae….that sweetie…just no.”
It’s tough. Singing English is hard enough, Jae needs to give himself time to gain fluency in English before he even tries movie roles here. Trying one too early, ala Jay Chou in “The Green Hornet” would be kind of terrible. I saw that movie last week precisely for the reason that I was interested to see if Jay Chou, a huge pop star in China, could pull it off. The short answer is: No. And it wasn’t good to watch him. [TOTAL Bias Interlude now: that role should have gone to Kwon Sang Woo, who would have been 1000% better in every way. He was considered, but not cast, who knows why. They fucked up.]
I want Jae to be a star in the U.S. VERY BADLY. I want him to come and stay here. 50,000,000 Korean girl fans will fight me tooth and nail until their dying breaths to stop him, but there–I said it and I’m glad. 🙂 But he HAS to learn English and speak it well. Americans are far too xenophobic in general to put up with broken and/or mangled English, no matter how gorgeous he is and typically, you get one shot, if you’re an outsider in Hollywood, so Jae’s got to make his count.
(as much as I would love it!) I don’t really get the impression that JYJ are seriously considering “breaking” into the American market. From my perspective, it seems they wanted to do an international projects because they were being blocked in Korea and needed some projs to tide them over until things get better in their home markets (SK, Jpn). Even though The Beginning was in English, it was targeted towards the E Asian & SE Asian fans with a nod to already existing N. American fans.
And the boys are too busy with other stuff (acting, musicals, directing) to try a full scale entry to the US market. Their commitments so far have them tied to working in Korea well into the summer and maybe the fall.
But who nows … if the situation doesn’t improve in Korea and Japan it might –> them actually seriously taking on the US.
I agree with you. Hopefully in the future if they do decide to work with Rodney again that the producers understand the strengths and abilities each member has to offer. I notice the lack of Jaejoong in most of the songs probably because of his English. The poor boy, he’ll take some time to really polish his english. Maybe it’s just me but language matters to me. Sometimes even good language skills can make a song sound completely different. I mean, it’s probably the same when they entered Japan. Now all they need is time to improve on that, which I know they will.
There were pros and cons for working with Kanye. But the cons won this time around (unfortunately). I’m just hoping they realize that just because they are big shots doesn’t mean they care for you or understand you. I notice how Will.i.am is very diligent and careful with 2NE1 and how Rodney is with JYJ. Kanye didn’t do that. Bloody hell he probably didn’t even care and needed connections to get into Asian, only realizing that JYJ is pretty much blocked in each and every corner. The things is, JYJ need to work with somebody who appreciates and understand the unique voices that they are JYJ, instead of completely turning them mainstream (which I find Jae Chong sounds are). But nonetheless, I trust that they learnt from it.
I trust they learned from this too. The U.S. unfortunately has a lot of xenophobes as lilibaiyu pointed out and they judge right off the bat. They won’t spare insults (I would say criticisms but that is too nice a word) and put our boys down.
It is kinda like Japan except Japan and Korea share more than either does with the U.S. in terms of culture. While Japan and Korea are open to U.S. music (This past January Mariah Carey was on Japan’s 18th? place I think on their charts) you will never see a Japanese singer on the American Billboards.
Good English is a must. Hell even southerners are judged and mocked for their English and they are from here too.
I don’t want them mainstream either. In the U.S. that really is like the deathcurse. Take Kesha for example. People don’t give a damn that she graduated top of her class or that she is a songwriter (she penned Britney Spears’ Till the world ends) they freaking hate her. And they won’t give her any credit no matter what.
I just want them to be themselves and to not be hesitant of taking direction in their work if they ever come here again to release an English album.
@doublejaedee ‘JaelolliPOP’
Here’s the ONLY thing you need to understand about an American music producer….. They are ALL looking for their next paycheck. “Do you want to produce our next album?”
“Oh, SUUURE! If you can pay me my price.” It’s true of the bottom line producers and it’s true of the top. They are all going project to project. They are each Unemployed after every job. So if a producer is really in demand, maybe he can afford to say ‘no’ or demand a ridiculously higher price. (this is what I think Kanye did) If not and he has time, trust me, the answer is always, “Oh, YES, I’ve listened to all your material (usually not true) and I’d LOVE to produce you!”
MY feeling, and I know this is not a universally shared feeling, is that the American producers did not really know or “respect” JYJ going into the project, did not understand who they were truly dealing with. Now, I’m betting, they do understand.
@Mia2
“I just want them to be themselves and to not be hesitant of taking direction in their work if they ever come here again to release an English album.”
Me too. that’s why I say…. learn English! Really well. Don’t make a move until you’re confident. (Geez, they did it with Japanese, why not English?) There is NO mountain these guys cannot scale! I hope they are getting good council.
@Lilibaiyu
“Here’s the ONLY thing you need to understand about an American music producer….. They are ALL looking for their next paycheck. “Do you want to produce our next album?””
I’m positive that that is for EVERY single producers out there, NOT just America. It’s a job, and its opportunistic, but you don’t want to continue making bad productions, you won’t get the job otherwise, as you’ve said, and I am sure everybody knows that. It is a paycheck but who does favors to people you don’t know? If Kanye was that busy or that high in demand, he wouldn’t even turn a second glance at JYJ. He may want a paycheck but he’s also looking for connections to Asia. The same way JYJ used Kanye and Rodney as big names to accommodate their transfer to the US. It’s all give and take.
Producers like Rodney who have worked with other Asian artist before JYJ already got a grasp of what the Asian music scene is like. And it looks like Rodney has his head in thinking JYJ is going to make it really big, and most likely would want to work with them again (maybe he never really knew much about the lawsuit and cockblocking happening). It may not be the same ‘respect’ we all understand, but his take on this matter is that he wants to continue working with JYJ. Kanye, not so much.
@MIA2
Yeah insults are inevitable. And I think I’ve said this before in a different post, but the fact that all the media are claiming that JYJ is a boyband, then they will continue to be labeled ‘a boyband.’ That name in itself is like calling for suicide. And hey, it’s a subtitle in this article. It’s even highlighted, oh dear lord.
America’s not going to accept anyone anytime soon. Other countries are far more accepting. It’s very true, good english is a must. And it’s not just that, if the boys are willing, they need to spend some time living in America. They need at least ‘some’ form of experience to notice the type of audience ‘niche’ they are trying to break into. Maybe go to smaller shows like all the bands that are trying to get a label. But I know JYJ won’t do that. I don’t know I have a feeling that they are trying to find an easy way out of this. I can understand though, it’s a hard path to take. Criticisms are something that I think the boys need to have, as I’m sure they do. They won’t improve otherwise.
but yes I agree with you. They need to find their voice and keep it. They’re almost there I can feel it. About the english, it’s true that language is a barrier. The thing is, there are some ‘accent’s like the reggae style english that suits their type of music. Konglish… hm…. not so much haha.
@doublejaedee ‘JaelolliPOP’
“Producers like Rodney who have worked with other Asian artist before JYJ already got a grasp of what the Asian music scene is like. Yes, I see… maybe… But then, why the short shrift on the tracks? Why the B- material, compared to what he’s been capable of? That’s my question. As a JYJ advocate second to none (I hope) I want answers to these questions. I want the guys to have access to the best of everything in the world. I know a bit about the recording business in the US and I can tell a less than top-flight production when I hear it. So I’m dissatisfied. Not with JYJ. No–never. With those who don’t regard them as the World Class talents that they are.
I wish people will not be so tough on the boys on the language… I believe they really put in a lot of effort, see Jae even takes English lessons!
Language is one of the most difficult thing to learn esp on how to pronouce them… And if a person don’t use them often, it’s also easy to forget.
So please don’t be so tough on the boys…
Well, ask those people to go learn Korean or Japanese!!! They will then know how hard it is… *seriously pissed off*
America is a proud monoglot culture for the most part. They don’t see the value of learning another language because they assume everybody will speak English. Even though I don’t always agree with the politics of Canada being bilingual, I do appreciate growing up with the idea that every person should speak at least two languages (what two languages they should be is what is open to debate.^^) If anything it teaches you compassion for a person having difficulty with your mother tongue.
Their efforts aren’t the problem. No one is judging them harshly but we are realistic about the American entertainment scene. They are complete bastards. Ugly thing to say about my fellow Americans (and of course I recognize there are many exceptions but not enough of them apparently) but it’s true.
@Shadow

Oh, I totally agree!! I hope you didn’t think I was being tough on the boys!! I’m talking about the way I know America and Americans think! There’s nothing I can do about that. That’s just the way it is here. I want JYJ and the various members individually to have the MOST SUCCESS POSSIBLE here. That’s why I’m saying, “Learn English. I know it’s a pain, but if you want this market, it’s an absolute MUST”
@Mia2
“No one is judging them harshly but we are realistic about the American entertainment scene. They are complete bastards. ”
Sad but true. I regularly despair over being an American.
We are so often soooooo wrong. Still, I am one, so the least I can do is alert others to the pitfalls we have here. They are many and some one never recovers form.
I want JYJ to CONQUER. I absolutely continue to believe they will.
@Lilibaiyu
I understand.
Sometimes I just feel so sorry for our boys. They’re so busy, they work so hard, they’re so talented and yet just because they are in a group, people’s conception is “they’re just another boyband” without giving them a chance!
Reality is tough but I just hope people will judge them only AFTER knowing them and not brush them off like that.
Pray pray pray hard for them~~
I think you make some very good points. One of the many reasons “The Beginning” is so criticized by fans involves production values and English. Darkchild is a good producer, so I won’t come down on him too hard. He has an incredible track record with damn near everyone in the music business.
What I want from JYJ should they attempt and English Language album again (and I hope they do), is to COMMIT to Time and English studies. I want them to work w/those who are good and not just popular. Yes, this country is xenophobic/racist, no dout about it. I live and breathe as a Black Woman in the US of A.
However, if you are going to approach music/film in a language not your own, it beheeoves you as a professional to tighten your game up. JYJ are capable of greatness and I want to see them shine like the Total Rockstars they are.
@Lenoxave
“One of the many reasons “The Beginning” is so criticized by fans involves production values and English. Darkchild is a good producer, so I won’t come down on him too hard. He has an incredible track record with damn near everyone in the music business.”
I always really enjoy your posts too. It’s so great to have so many insightful people to talk to about this, I can’t tell you… 🙂
My point about Rodney is not limited to him alone: I know he’s been really successful and has done a lot of great work. But every songwriter has their “A” material, their “B” material and their “C” material. (Believe me, the good ones all know this only too well.) So then the question becomes: “Here we have this Korean pop group, JYJ. I don’t know much about them but they seem pretty good. Which material do I pull out? How important are they?” My ear told me Rodney gave them maybe B- material and I had a problem with that. Now, with Rodney, B- material is obviously still pretty good. But it aint the “A” stuff he’s saving for The Big Dogs of American music. Which is a shame, because “The Beginning” might just end up selling numbers like one of the Big Dogs!
That is one epic picture.
Indeed ^o^
Agreed!
OMG OMG, I love the picture. Why does Junsu look like the good brother while the other two are mischief.. LOL..
Hahaha, yeah. Junsu looks like the good kid, Jae the rebellious one, and Chun the mischievous xD
I love this picture of them!
That ending sentence was so sad. What sometimes gets lost in our understanding of Korean culture is that things don’t have to be said. Their ex-managers from SM and their co-workers didn’t have to tell them to not date. The pressure and criticism was obvious.
Sometimes forced conformity isn’t someone outright threatening or ordering you to act a certain way or do a certain action but rather guilting/manipulating you by saying, “Ah, your fans will be disappointed.” or “This [selfish] action of yours could affect the whole group.”
I think those fans should chill. As if some of them even have a snowball’s chance in hell of dating any of them. Poor boys. I just want them to be happy.
@MIA2
“Sometimes forced conformity isn’t someone outright threatening or ordering you to act a certain way or do a certain action but rather guilting/manipulating you by saying, “Ah, your fans will be disappointed.” or “This [selfish] action of yours could affect the whole group.”
What I’m hoping is that that may have been true for the “Idol” model, but not for JYJ who have now shown their stuff as real artists, actors and directors. They aren’t kids anymore and are already moving away from the more childlike, objectified way of being that they had as a “boy band.” I think it’s sad in a way that the article refers to them as a “boy band.” They are so much more than that now.
Yeah it is true but I still think it is taking Korea some time to recognize this. They still associate them with TVXQ but for all the wrong reasons. It is like to them JYJ are still the 19 year old idol hopefuls running around doing variety shows and routine interviews and not grown men who are going through a trying time.
I think Homin are spared from being called a boyband because it is just two of them. I find that really dumb but some netizens don’t label 2TVXQ a boyband for that reason.
I also find that artists suffer in Korea. As you know as well of course. Amazing singers who do a lot of things are kind of underrated because they aren’t young or good-looking. This system rewards youth and good-looks because that is the driving force behind their selling tactics. It helps when they are talented like Taeyeon or Seohyun but that is icing on the cake for them when it should be the other way around.
Agree with what u said… and it’s unfortunate to realize that…
@Mia2
“I also find that artists suffer in Korea. As you know as well of course. Amazing singers who do a lot of things are kind of underrated because they aren’t young or good-looking. You are SO right. The exact model is: young, very young, pretty-featured R&B-tinged singers who are well-behaved and pliable and who have good dance moves. Any straying from that motif sends them permanently to the outer fringes of K-Pop stardom. And it’s a shame, because as I have explored the world of K-pop for the last few years, after a lifetime of full immersion in the U.S.A. music business, I have found a wealth of really superior talent, the likes of which far, FAR exceeds the size of the country they hail from. It would be like as if every 4th person in the U.S. could make the finals on “America’s Next Idol.” (what a nightmare that would be!)
But the good news here is that JYJ, God love them, have Got It All. They are the whole package, plus they are each DRIVEN to make the most of what talents they have been given and because of the work ethic that has been drilled into them over the last 8 years (and this really can not be overestimated) they are “Achievement Maniacs.” This is why they will succeed.
They’ve got it all goin’ on.
You make a good point. Like in most Asian families, the children are guilted into doing things, rather than being outright told. It’s just terrible.
And the dating thing…well…I really have mixed feelings about that. As much as I would love seeing little Jae juniors running around, I would be the greenest shade of envy of that woman who will be his wife. >.<
They live their own lives, and honestly, who doesn't want the freedom to date who they want when they want?
@MintChocolate
We can be happy for Jae & miserable for ourselves together then!
Eventually it will happen, so… yeah… hahaha
BTW, here’s another article from VMag on their site abt the boys:
http://www.vmagazine.com/2010/11/east-meets-kanye-and-rocks-out-in-nyc/
Twinnie, at least we’ll always have each other! ♥
This was pretty well written and captured a lot of JYJ’s situation in very limited space/word count. Also really love the photo! Hope there are more pictures w/ that same styling but probably not since it’s from January. All in all, the photo & article are presented in a way a casual American reader would find intriguing! They sound very mature and interesting in this interview. Good job Francis Cha!
Also, it really saddens me that none of the boys have been able to date openly and I’m sure that was a major strain in their previous relationships. I think Jaejoong is super insightful in terms of fan psychology. All those comments and tweets about how lonely he is or how his parents are older and desperately want to grandchild =/= interview fodder or spazz material … it’s a way to preparing fans and trying make fans empathize with him, Junsu, & Yuchun. He’s using twitter, interviews, etc not just in promotional ways for JYJ but also as an avenue to sensitize fans to certain conditions and sacrifices they’ve made (dating, sasengs, and so on).
@fannypak – *what you said* – ditto.
JJ *is* very adept at reading the moods/needs of fans. And he also does an excellent job of ‘fronting’ or covering for the comments of his brothers…like when sweet-Junsu had his heart broken and tweeted about “we used to have the same enemies”…or when The’Chun has a tweet-down on the sa-saengs stalking his house. I swear I scroll past the pics of Yoochun in his garage…everytime one of those pops up – I just wanna scream. It’s his damn garage people! Can you imagine having crazy people lurking in YOUR garage when you get home from work – or need to take out the trash? ffs
Anyway – yes! I think JJ is preparing the fans for the inevitable relationships that each of them are going to have. I mean, for some of us, the thought that they have no one to share their deepest selves with (as partners do) is TRAGIC. To have your best-young-nubile years left behind you with NO memories of the flush of love and heartbreak. C’mon, these are natural things…and the guys deserve to experience every bit of life just as robustly as anyone else.
So yeah….I say…go and get it boys~ ~ …and for the few lucky women who will have their love…keep the romance to yourself…during & after. No tell all stories please – No one (famous or otherwise) wants their dating history plastered around for all to read. so…shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. (ok?) ❤
lolol good post.
Right click…and saved..so in love with the pic..
But wherever JYJ goes, their fan are never far behind..SOOOOO TRUEEEEE!
Yes, we never far behind them ^-^
omo!!
how come i dont have any pics from this photoshoot??
i cant believe i missed this to-drool-for pics!!
*cries in the corner*

I am loving this article!
It is not condescending (given the status of JYJ as a “boy band”)
It hints at the massive following they have
The quotes from the members show depth
They are not portrayed as shallow “idols” and does not stereotype them as such
It relegates their being former TVXQ members as something from the past and focuses more on their activities as JYJ
When someone reads it, and they don’t know who JYJ is, they will have a positive image of what the boys are all about
and best of all, it calls them “Asia’s most prominent pop group!”
Clearly, this author took the time to compress the band’s history and legacy thus far without being too melodramatic nor too literary. Just straight up, in-your-face, quick JYJ introduction for non JYJ fans right here.
Plus, the image choice was too perfect! It shows JYJ against the typical idol image/mold Korean pop idols are known for.
@Jan
Yup, yup, yup to all the above. My only quibble is the “boy band” monniker. That seemed condescending. Never mind it’s not true, except as Ancient History. I mean, given that, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen are “boy bands” too… just a bit further removed down the pike………….
@Lilibaiyu
True! Even The Beatles and The Beach boys used to be called “boy bands” 😀
@Jan
EVERYBODY who was ever young who made it was a “boy band!” This was a subtle (not!) dig at the Asians. I hate this. It’s so unnecessary and quite prejudiced.
It does kind of sound like a dig at them because pretty much all Americans (with few exceptions and I doubt the author of this is one of them) know that the “boyband” label is reminiscent of that god-awful 90s era. Younger Americans have some hate thing going on with the Jonas Brothers. It is a mess. Even individual pop stars aren’t spared from criticism or accusations that their music is mediocre.
Part of it I recognize is from this silly belief that anything popular is “overrated” and anything underground or retro (from before the 80s) is “cool and edgy.” You have no idea how tired I am of viewing an old music video and having tools say, “This is SO much better than anything coming out today.” or “How did we end up with Justin Bieber?” as if he is the only singer at the time or something.
Some criticism under these circumstances is inevitable but let us not make it worse by labeling them under “boyband” or pushing them to The States before they are truly ready.
Too many people forget that pop music means popular music, & that it’s popular for the very simple reason that A LOT of people like it. Too many people use music to be music snobs, just to try & be cool & edgy & different. Get over it already. Good music is good music, regardless of who makes it or where it comes from.
PS: that was a rant at music snobs, not at you @Lilibaiyu or @MIA2.
@Mia2
“Part of it I recognize is from this silly belief that anything popular is “overrated” and anything underground or retro (from before the 80s) is “cool and edgy.” You have no idea how tired I am of viewing an old music video and having tools say, “This is SO much better than anything coming out today.” or “How did we end up with Justin Bieber?” as if he is the only singer at the time or something.”
hahahahaha Well, as someone who wrote a lot of music in the ’80s (“the hair-band” era) and sang on a fair amount in the ’70s, I take your point. I’d chalk it up largely to Baby-Boomers’ nostalgia for the good old days. We don’t need to bother ourselves with them. 🙂
There’s no doubt though, that the tsunami of fervor that created and has sustained JYJ will not automatically translate itself to the U.S.A. They will be starting over from Square One here. Personally, I think they are up to the task, in fact, I think they’ll welcome the challenge. Remember what they’ve just been through…. None of us can even imagine how hard these guys are capable of working, or how determined they are.
jaejoong and chunnie’s hair is making me have very very naughty thoughts!!!
*blush*
Junsu NAILS this photo shoot!!!
*_*
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥JUNSOO♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Yes, Junsoo really nails it. WoW
@W-W
Totally agree! He rocks this one!!
yup! Junsu looked COOL here!!

Those magazine use ENG. nee…Awesome … although the photo took at Jan ago.
but its suitable for our boyz promotion for their upcoming World wide concert at Canada & US by released today. Hwaiting JYJ… Be Bright & Be Famous as True Artists.
THIS IS AMAZING! V Magazine is like…super well known 😀 like W Magazine
but this is the american one! AMAZING this is awesome exposure!!
also THEY LOOK SO INCREDIBLY SEXY HERE ❤
im pretty sure this is the AMERICAN branch of V Magazine doing an edition on Asia 😀 Lady Gaga was on the front! awesomeee~~~
Does anyone know which issue is it?
July issue?
I’m not sure what month it is, but it’s listed as the Asian issue on the official website: http://www.vmagazine.com/
will definitely get this once it’s out.
I hope fans won’t be too hard with the boys esp on dating and language.
I’ve been to the concerts and while their pronunciation is not yet perfect, it has definitely improved compared to the recorded version. Please let us give them some time ok? 🙂 It is hard learning a new language considering they are doing a bazillion things to do atm.
That is what worries me. If I have to wait before they come to The States then I will wait because I would rather wait than have them embarrass themselves. “Ayyy Girl” wasn’t so bad. Not my taste but it did OK.
They can recover but they can’t afford any pitfalls that is why I truly want them to take their time. Their talent is definitely not the issue here.
I also think it is important that they concentrate on finishing SM/Avex’s ridiculous blocking before doing anything too out there.
Rome wasn’t built in a day.
@rubypurple
“Please let us give them some time ok? 🙂 It is hard learning a new language considering they are doing a bazillion things to do atm.”
Listen: ~I’LL~ give them all the time in the world. I’ve been listening to them for years, not understanding a single word of Korean. I LOVE JYJ. I “get” them. I’m talking about the greater American public. They are not so nice, a lot of times. They want to hear English. They are not so tolerant of Asians, sadly. (this breaks my heart, but it’s true.)
So yes, it’s hard to learn English, but my God–look at what the members of JYJ have done so far! I’m convinced they can do ANYTHING they set out to do! And I want them to succeed, more than anything, in the US. So I have every hope that they can do it, as long as they have the right advice.
Well, I think they are taking the right advice; taking English lessons!
From my observation, JJ had it the hardest. 😦 Though I trust he’s trying hard. (Noone’s perfect but I think he’s pretty good with languages since he actually learn Jap pretty fast! Haha)
Su on the other hand seems to be improving and Chunnie is being well Chunnie. 🙂
@Shadow

Chunnie. When was it otherwise? Here’s how charismatic Chunnie is: when he does something brilliant, we cheer wildly. When he speaks fractured English, we all smile, shake our heads and go, “Ooooh, Chunnie….” lol
haha… not talking about him being anything but good…
It’s just that if you’re really talking about speaking good English, Chunnie’s level is really not there yet.
Though he makes it up with his oh-so-sexy-voice when he speaks English, (in fact I love! it when he does), he still needs to improve on it. 🙂

lolol That’s exactly my point! I (and about 3,000,000 other girls) love everything he does, brilliant or silly! This is the infernal HOLD this man has on us!!! As David Letterman says, “We are Hyp-Mo-tized!”
🙂
I want to see more pics from this photoshoot. I want more pics I want more pics I want more pics
OMG! Did I read that right? “The Beginning” is officially released in June 2011? Hmmm I have mixed feelings…I hope the tracklisting changes a bit because “The Beginning” was kinda weak and doesn’t display their potential. UGH. Heck, even reworking some of the production would be good =.=
Someday, I hope to listen to a crossover CD that includes English AND Korean/Japanese lyrics. ^^
I concur once again. Not their best but nothing that can’t be tweaked a bit. I really want a strong rapper in their CD. Yoochun is good but that isn’t really his forte. It would add a bit of energy to some of their songs.
Or~ we can ship Yoochun to New York to master the art of rapping.
We’ll pimp him out. I already know his game name~ The Chun.
LOL! I kid of course.
Yea. It definitely needs tweaking – like Ayyy Girl =.=. Iono, to me, they pushed this CD out waaay too quickly. It just felt rushed. And it doesn’t help that we gave JYJ mixed signals by voting for that CD onto the Billboard’s reader fave picks when in reality, it wasn’t the best. It’s really a double-edged sword. This voting probably gave them exposure but it’s just not the best CD to represent the essence of JYJ.
Lol. Yoochun needs to work on his English first before he can even think about rapping in English. He’s got the rhythm, just slightly lacking the pronunciation and lyrical know-hows.
I have exam tonight but got severe headache reading circuits. and here I am releasing stress and Im definitely cured with this article released from V magazine. That’s one major magazine right?
The timing is just great before they set foot in US.
That picture speak volumes. I bet people will be curious. They Asian alright but talent and beauty transcend racism. That explain how all of us here become their fans. I believe more will be converted. For us here, we played a big role. One of major attraction of JYJ is their strong and passionate fanbase. The article were right is so many way.
The world, we come to trampled you.
They are great aren’t they?
Hope you the best in your exams. Take a bubblebath and enjoy the beauty that is JYJ. It will help with your stress.

I just adore that expression of JaeJoong’s in 1st pic! He looks so manly!!!!!!
kyaaaa~@! /swoons.
¿Is this article from last summer? It looks like…….
Well, it doesn’t matter. It talks about JYJ boys, and that’s what really matters.
By the way, I love this black and white pic. They all look so…………….enigmatic and mysterious……………………….
1. They look so so darn handsome in these pictures. I love this look. The picture borders art photography.
2. Their accent is understandable taking in account that English is not their first language. Darn, the boys are fluent in Japanese, so I am sure they will also become fluent in English. English is not my first language, and I understand perfectly how they feel and how hard they have to work.
3. The English album is excellent. I listen to it everyday, and the more I listen the more I have an idea what they intended to do. They are so so brave to try this kind of music. If you listen carefully to the lyrics there are some interesting messages.
4. I love love them, and I want them to date whoever they want; it does not matter if they date boys or girls as long as they are happy. Darn, they are young healthy men, I would find it weird for them not to date at their age. Hope they find someone who can sincerely adore them.
5. JYJ, fighting to the top of the world and beyond through peace, kindness, and love.
@Daebaksama
A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Loved all your points.
@Daebaksama
Yes, Indeed! to all the above. I like “The Beginning” now too–a lot.
I didn’t at first. I was mad at their producers and felt they’d been short-changed. But I kept listening, and now I like it a lot.
🙂
@Lilibaiyu, thanks to “The Beginning”, JYJ boys were able to reach American and European fans as well. And they were able to enter the U.S. musical market. As you, I didn’t like it so much in “the beginning”, but knowing all the huge efforts the boys did, and the very special meaning of recording an album in english, I learnt to love it with all my heart and my senses.
I think only in South Korea and Japan where idols can’t date openly. LOL! but well, that’s the price for being so famous, not to mention being so hot and ravenous… XD
I’m so proud for the three of them for emancipating from their former agency, and doing just what they love doing…
The names Xiah Junsu, Hero Jaejoong, and Mickey Yoochun from TVXQ will probably take a long while for people to name them with their real names as Kim Junsu, Kim Jaejoong, and Park Yoochun of group JYJ.
So many awesome comments on this thread – I could spend all night replying to each of them – at least I want to….unfortunately, my new restaurant-client (I do graphic design for print) needs a catering brochure and I’ll be spending the evening type-setting T___T. (oh well, have to keep the pantry full somehow..ha!)
I do want to throw out a comment or two anyway:
1) Someone mentioned that *The Beginning* CD would be released in June? My opinion – Let it Go ~ Let it Go~ …like others, I feel this particular *gathering* of music was rushed & under-produced. The English was a good effort, but clearly needs polishing…and well, just overall, I would prefer they head back to the studio…Korea or U.S, doesn’t matter…and give us something NEW. Even if it takes another 6 months to compile & record it….I’d rather wait…just my opinion.
2) I know all us English speakers REALLY want the guys to make their mark in “our part of the world” …but in all honesty, it takes about 3 years of intense study to master the grammar and vocabulary of another language. Yoochun has a good base, but we know he’s far from fluent, Junsu seems to be interested and I actually have some hope for him because, well…you DO have to WANT to learn in order to retain a foreign language…and last (my bias ❤)…Jae, oh Jae….”bro….no shit” Jae….I’ve got a gut feeling that the least of Director Kim’s concerns right now is irregular verbs and idioms in English.
Let’s face it fellow English speakers – our language is pretty messy and the OVERLOAD of idioms & slang that permeate everday language would/does confound students all over the world – I’m going to cut the ‘guys some slack’…and not ‘ride their backs’…if they never master our twisted-tongue. 😉
@sally_B

lol Well… I can’t exactly argue with you. English speakers can spend a lifetime continuing to learn to use the language correctly. I know I have.
And I STILL make mistakes pretty regularly. But I want JYJ here, darn it, and I want them to do WELL here. I agree it won’t happen overnight and it won’t happen unless they really really go diving into it with all their might. Maybe you’re right and it’s out of reach, at least in the near future. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
But thanks for all of your invariably insightful comments.
Now, get back to work!
neener…..I’m not working yet….this site is tooooo addictive. heehee.
(Thanks…I always look for your “name” here…knowing that I’ll read something witty and/or well-reasoned) (hug ~ ♥)
Oh …trust me…I want them to be here & do well just as much as you. Something about them – from their innate talent – to their stunningly hard work and ethical values…just captivates me.
My comments about the difficult and neccessary time needed to master the language stem from my own efforts to learn Korean. Over the past 8 months I have day-by-day, haru-haru, tried to increase my grasp …and if the guys are having as much difficulty putting verbs in the middle of a sentence as I am having putting it at the end…well, then “we’re even”. LOL.
…and don’t get me started on the whole ‘dropping the subject of a sentence all together’….omg. So yeah…I’ll be appeased if they manage to memorize a coupla’ dozen ‘by-rote’ phrases to yell out at the concerts. If they even do that much…I’ve considered requesting a North American tweet-a-thon to gently encourage them to ‘toss some English at us”…..#JYJspeakEnglish….hahaha! (Love ’em anyway)
ok…type setting…commence ~ ~

OMG, I stand in rapt awe of you…no… I’m on my knees bowing down! How awesome. I kid myself that by watching enough K-dramas I’ll learn the language by simple immersion, but so far…… not so much. lol
Really, I think there’s nothing for it but for a few of us to volunteer to go over there, hold their hands and teach them English, one lovely phrase at a time. Sure, we’ll have to be with them night and day, around the clock, but I think all of our hard work and sacrifice will eventually pay off. Maybe. Although it could take years.
🙂
^^ i love this.
chunnie’s expression is so cute~
I dont think JYJ should release the “beginning” album in the US… I dont think the songs are for the american audiences~ It wont work~ sorry 🙂
I love this pic >.< I always adore magazine photoshoots with style~ I wonder if it's on sale in my country … *right-click-saved* xD
great article, i hope they are still taking their english lessons….i am american and i know my music market audience. If they really going to aim for america, they really need to polish their english skills, all three of them esp my poor Jae.
i know learning a language is hard but US and Japan are the number 1 and 2 music industry of the world, if u want in the game, u have to learn the language.
@Mari_Sol

I think making a mark in the U.S. is something the guys really want to achieve.
Obviously, they have been greatly influenced by American music. It only makes sense that they should wish to come here and be well thought of by some of their heroes. There are great producers and writers here. The U.S. is the big leagues. I just want them to be really prepared for what it’s like here.
ah lovin’ JJ messy hairstyle
