JYJ3 note: This is Part 1 of an article written by Professor Lee DongYeon, who teaches cultural theory at Korea National University of Arts. We decided to translate this piece due to its strength of insight and its relevance to understanding how the situation between JYJ and SM is perceived by intellectuals as well as by the general public. DNBN, among other Korean fansites, have posted the professor’s article and we believe it is our duty to share it with international fandom. Part 2 will be posted tomorrow.
JYJ, K-pop’s exiles that refused to be ‘slaves’, what will be their destiny…?
K-pop is at the peak of its craze. In Tokyo, Beijing, Bangkok, and also Paris, London, New York, K-pop is emerging as the new global pop. Via TV and internet, K-pop is claimed to be global icon that lets the world know about South Korea’s cultural excellence. But how much do we actually know about K-pop? On what condition has K-pop come into the spotlight of global pop? How the music of K-pop is created and consumed? Is K-pop really substantial?
K-pop is not the K-pop that we know because K-pop covers only idol music. And K-pop’s exterior and interior are disconnected because the perspectives on K-pop of international K-pop fans and domestic music fans are different. K-pop is like Samsung that ascended the throne to become a global company with its ‘no labor union’ myth. Although idol groups have worked hard and became global stars, there is no way for them to speak properly about their worries and pains. Like global company Samsung that doesn’t have a labor union, K-pop is global pop formed through unlimited competition without freedom. Read More →

[TRANS] SM’s abuse in power is not even a true power for people such as myself who make ads or for those who produce these advertisements. This field is not like the broadcasting companies who cannot maintain their programs without the appearance of artists on their shows. Every idea in this world can be used for advertisements and any person has qualifications to appear [in ads]! There are many celebrities!
[TRANS] It looks as though SM Entertainment stops models in their agency from signing with companies who have chosen JYJ to be their advertising models. They must think that they can control advertising companies in the same way that they can control broadcasting companies. This is the kind of arrogance that is held by the people who have much power.

In 2011, most of the world’s news spread quickly across the globe thorough various Social Networking Sites.
Those who could not find an outlet to voice their opinions also utilized SNS to express their thoughts and at times, changed the world. These same social networking sites became a gateway of communication between JYJ and their fans.
The three JYJ members Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, and Kim Junsu were once members of the greatest idol group, TVXQ under SM Entertainment but publicly revealed their unfair contracts and became independent.
The three members were once part of the wildly popular group, but suddenly became distant from their fans once creating JYJ. There really was no way for them to properly communicate with their fans.
They desperately needed to build a bridge in order to be able to reach their fans, and SNS became the obvious answer. After leaving TVXQ in July of 2009, JYJ publicly released two albums but it was not easy for the public to have access to their music or their performances.
Due to reasons unknown, the boys are unable to publicly perform on television programs or cable channels. Despite this, the boys sold over 320,000 copies of their two albums released in 2010 and 2011, proving that their fame knows no bounds and fans still highly support their career.
Pictures, which compare male idol stars’ appearances, were recently released and drew a lot of attention.
On January 3, an online community posted pictures with the caption, “Average appearance of male idol stars.” Each of the thirteen pictures represents each boy group’s appearance. A person, who uploaded the pictures, compounded the members’ faces of each group.
Pictures of Big Bang, 2PM, and FT Island look like the members of each group: Seungri, Jang Woo Young, and Lee Hong Ki.
People responded: “JYJ looks so handsome.” “This is why they are idol stars. The average appearances look handsome as well.” “The person who compounded thirteen members of Super Junior must have worked hard.”
We’ve posted an article confirming JYJ’s South American tour cities and dates. Allkpop published another article that has quotes that were not in our article so it’s worth a read.
JYJ has announced that they’ll soon be performing in South America!
On January 4th, C-Jes Entertainment revealed, “JYJ’s South American tour has been confirmed. JYJ’s solo concert will be held on March 9th in Chile followed by March 11th in Peru.”
The March 9th concert will be held in Santiago, Chile at the Teatro Caupolican, while the March 11th show will be held in Lima, Peru at the Explanada Sur del Estadio Monumental.
The South American promotion agency for JYJ remarked, “The popularity of JYJ in South America is in a different class altogether from the craze for K-Pop. Their popularity exceeds that of domestic artists as well as American pop artists, and they have the passionate support of teens as well as those in their 20′s.”
The JYJ members stated, “The countries are very far with flight times over 30 hours. After releasing an English album in 2010 with Kanye West and Rodney Jerkins, the amount of fans in the Americas have grown rapidly. Thus, although the [countries] are so far away, they have always felt familiar [to us].” Read More →
