Note: This is a review written by a noteworthy Korean blogger and avid TV drama critic.
Until recently, I have been falling for time slip rooftop prince. And then, since an another time slip drama, Dr.Jin, was going to be aired, I was waiting for it with expectations. But when I watched this drama, what I thought was “What~ is this?!”
Why didn’t my expectations rise toward Song Seunghun and Park Minyoung but toward Lee Bumsoo and Kim Jaejoong? By any chance, are Lee Bumsoo and Kim Jaejoong the leading actors of this drama?
Well, I don’t ever think about blaming Song Seunghun’s acting skills. I understand that he is acting as a man of modern time, who travels back to Joseon Dynasty. However, I can’t help thinking, “Why is he so superficial?”
Park Minyoung doesn’t stand out either. Instead of seeing 2 different individuals from modern time and from the Joseon Dynasty, I only see Park Minyoung.
I don’t have expectations in Song Seunghun and Park Minyoung. It’s just a story about a cold-blooded doctor becoming a doctor who respects the life; and two men competing over a woman. This is also what Dr.Jin must solve in the future. But in fact, wasn’t it all revealed already? What should they do? Cold-blooded doctor turning into a doctor who respects the life, it was already solved in epsode 2. The loveline of two men competing over one woman, that, well.. I don’t think I’ll watch that with great expectations. Because all [this storyline] was already drawn out in my head.
Eventually, no matter what image these two will show in the future, I don’t think it can bring remarkable changes. On the other hand, I’m looking forward to Lee Bumsoo and Kim Jaejoong. Of course I’m not saying that Kim Jaejoong is on the same playing field with the veteran Lee Bumsoo. Because, to tell you the truth, the gap between Lee Bumsoo and Kim Jaejoong is very big. However, their common point is that, the characters that these 2 portray will make people anticipate [this drama].
Lee Bumsoo is showing a shrewd Lee Haeung just as the character has to be. There, I’m looking forward to see a Lee Heung who will change in order to seize power. I feel that Lee Bumsoo can express completely the transformation in the character’s personality.
Same for Kim Jaejoong’s case. For now, it’s a character who shows emotions through his fierce eyes and snaps harshly at people. But Kim Kyungtak is not simply a character that merely snaps fiercely at people. Expressing anger, but in such a way where the anger hides inner sadness, Kim Kyungtak must be like that.
This Kim Kyungtak card is a card that can flows in a direction of which you can’t ever imagine. It can be fleshed out and also gather the great charms of a leading character. I think that, following the flow of Kim Kyungtak’s character, the storyline of Dr.Jin might change. “How well Kim Jaejoong can do with this role?” I wonder. Until now, he has been flawlessly handling the character, which makes me look forward [to him].
I don’t know where Dr.Jin will go to but “rather than Song Seunghun and Park Minyoung, will the performance of Lee Bumsoo and Kim Jaejoong make this drama more interesting?” I wonder. The last thing I want to say is, “Why do the patients always appear coincidentally in front of the leading characters?” It’s too obvious and isn’t fun anymore.

LOL, i agree with the part: The last thing I want to say is, “Why do the patients always appear coincidentally in front of the leading characters?” It’s to obvious and isn’t fun anymore.. i think the same, or when the male lead always scape of bad situations because sick people appear in the right time! I think the drama is interesting but i’m really mad the character that Jae has to play not because he’s bad (i really love bad characters xD) but because he doesn’t do that much, he’s always sitting in a horse, i mean, come on give me more action, i hope the producers will develop his character ^^ .. I really like Lee Bumso, he really can act and the same with Jae, i hope we can see more of his personality. About the male lead, i don’t know what to say because he doesn’t seem too interesting
.. Well the drama it’s just starting so i¡m waiting to see more depth in this drama :3
I think the storyline of SSH and PMY have to play is too predictable. When Dr. Jin was about to be executed, of course he would be saved, it’s just the 2nd episode, there’s no way he’ll die. And it’s also natural for Yong Rae to be attracted to JH, he’s someone new, different from the rest and saved the life of her brother. And being a “look alike” of JH’s Mi Na , so there, they will be the lovers of the story. I agree with the blogger, the characters of Lee Haeung and Kim Kyungtak are the one’s bringing questions from the viewers “What will happen next? ” , they’re the one giving excitement to the story.
I do not need to be a professional critic to realize, the great development of the character being developed by Jae. Plus I did not know who was Lee Bumsoo, but Lee Haeung and Kim Kyungtak’s character, they have quite surprised me.
in my humble opinion, as this noteworthy Korean blogger said, “the characters that these 2 portray will make people anticipate this drama”. 🙂
Very nice review!! 😀
“Kim Jaejoong’s case. For now, it’s a character who shows emotions through his fierce eyes and snaps harshly at people…the anger hides inner sadness sadness”
I couldn’t help but notice this too. Jaejoong’s character like a bit “emotional” man who tries to cover his emotions with harsh treatment.
This makes his character even more interesting. I love the harsh warrior with kind heart ❤
….i only hope Kim Jaejoong will steal the Show just like Won Bin when play along with SSH….
Oh! My Takkie 🙂 Fighting! Fighting!
I ‘m longing for next epi, I want to see more of Takkie’s character^^
What does Takkie believe in? Will he be doing the things that he does not believe in? To inflict more pain on his past or to numb his suffering, it must be something we don’t know yet besides his love for his evil father. Hmmm….. uhh.. many layers of sadness ;(
Takkie, my tough warrior with kind heart will he later become
my Takkie tough warrior with BRAVE heart.
All in all, does he want to please his father that much? Is he waiting for love in return from his father? what does he want to accomplish besides doing his father’s errands?
Dr. Jin fighting too! He knew what has been taking place in history, he also has skills as a doctor, what would he want to do for the life of people in the Jeon era? —Where there is death, there is always death— (This quote comes from Men in Black 3) ..So can Dr. Jin change his fiance fate?
For Yeong Rae, what will that be? Will she later become a doctor/nurse of her past life? Will she heal Takkie ‘s wound? Actually, will Takkie save her from her fate?
When I watched Men in Black3, I was like, “Oh, time jump again, from RTP to Dr. Jin, now even in movies 🙂 ” !
Hi Kris^^
Haha… do you like MIB3?
The ending is so touching, ya! “J” went back to save “K”‘s life and forever bonding XD
haha. this kind of reminds of me watching dark shadow starring johnny depp. i was thinking,’ ehhh another time slip. from rooftop prince, Dr.jin , and now, dark shadow also the same’ 😀
someone feel same like me,my Jaeherms sister wisely advise us to support all actors for sake of drama but 2 leads clearly annoy me,I think is because actor, director, writer all 3 fault SSH was my ok list,I like PMY in skks & city hunter but in here ??? especially dr.jin
Lee bum so <333 look at the men change to fit character so good
Jae he got his character well in the eye expression,he got everything that synopsis described
I’ve had some face-palm moments reading harsh comments toward Jae, such as his sageuk tone is awkward, his acting is cringe-worthy, etc, but those people can’t really point out the reasons why they think that way. No constructive criticisms whatsoever. I wonder if they actually watch the drama and see Jaejoong with objective eyes. I don’t think Kyungtak is a simple character either. He appears fierce and always snaps at people, but he is the one who will have most inner conflicts: right and wrong, listening to his father’s orders or following his own morals, jealousy, how he will deal with seeing the one he loves drift away from him to another man, whether he’ll be able to execute his best friend when he finds out the man is the leader of the bandits. Kyungtak doesn’t show a lot of emotions because he’s supposed to be a serious and composed officer. I’m anticipating Jaejoong’s acting a lot. Lee Bumsoo is outstanding. Seungheon is ok I guess. Min Young doesn’t really step it up from her previous role in SKKS, still the typical female character in many K-dramas.
my only complaint after watched 2 ep is, jaejoong growling too much. once, it’s okay, that sound sexy, twice, is uhh, wild *__* but everytime he talk?? nuh-uh, i prefer when kyung tak talked with young rae, his voice is so smooth.
but i kinda get it why he growl so much when he speak, IMO it’s because his voice is high, unlike yoochun. yoochun is a low baritone, so even he speak low he still can be heard. jaejoong has to shout, but when he shout, his voice is too high, unsuitable for a strict officer.
but i think this series is an okay one, so i will wait for the next ep to judge..
uhm excuse me. read this =.=
I’m writing this because I saw some negative comments abour Kim Jaejoong’s sageuk tone in Dr.Jin.
If you search ‘김재중 닥터진’ on nate, you will see this sentence 김재중은 안정적인 사극톤과 캐릭터 소화력을 보여 눈길을 끔, which means “Kim Jaejoong is attracting attention with his stable sageuk tone and the ability in character disgestion,” in the small paragraph right beside a small photo of Kim Kyungtak. That small paragraph is to explain why the term ‘김재중 닥터진’ is searched.
And in this article, http://news.nate.com/view/20120529n03501, his tone was praised as ‘1, 2회에서 김재중은 무난한 사극톤과 카리스마 눈빛 연기 등을 선보이며 일단 합격점을 받아냈다.’ = In episodes 1 and 2, Kim Jaejoong showed a comfortable sageuk tone and charismatic eyes acting, receiving passing mark.
So, what I want to say is that, unless you’re Korean, please don’t judge Kim Jaejoong’s sageuk tone.
But if all you want is just to dig up dirt up, I have nothing more to say then.
Now please tell me, which case are you in? you know korean or just want to dig things up?
and oh, just let you know in Korea, ALL KOREAN praise his voice and tone in DR JIN and why its always inter fans who n\know NOTHINNG about korean has something to say about jaejoong?
growling? are you serious?
@yukasato are you korean ? if not then you shouldn’t judge him , no offence -_-
Totally agree with this article. After watched 2 eps, to me the drama is so boring. Maybe I watched Dr.Jin Jap ver, and the man who lead the role Dr. did very well. When look at his face you feel his sincere which I can’t find in SSH. The same to PMY, her acting skill is very boring. And when it comes to JJ’s scene, awww, his eyes make me hurt really much.
i’ve watched ep 1 twice (coz the 1st round without sub)… could’t help feeling that the story line is lame & d director didn’t pay much attention to detail. SSH acting isn’t bad but could’t say good either… JJ appearance is very limited like it’s going to extinct any second… dont have the urge to watch 2nd episode….. 😦
When I heard that Jaejoongie was acting with SSeunghun, I already anticipated that Jaejoong would outshine SSH. JJ is a more natural and instinctive actor. SSH is rather bland and has a limited repertoire of expressions. Park Minyoung has not displayed much range or depth in her acting either. So … its up to JJ to keep folks watching.
I think it is unfair to say SSH is so so…he was great in East of Eden and My Princess. He goes through a character change in this drama…as I think all of the main characters will. Let’s just wait and see how the director develops the drama…so far, I think they are following what their characters are expected to do…Lee Bum Soo is a veteran actor, very very good, and will carry us along. Whoever casted, did a good job…first seeing on the exterior, now developing the interior of each actor. KJJ is rather new to acting, but he has been trained well to do a good job at whatever he endeavors…I think he has inner strength, even greater than his outer beauty. His personal life attests to this. He has an interesting role…well worth the kudos he brings to this drama. Can’t wait to see whatever facial expressions he does in future episodes. I, so far, am intrigued by this drama…that’s what dramas do, tell a story, and I love a story.
I sort of agree with the comments, SSH n PMY acting is really flat … I cannot feel the emotions … its like acting with no feelings at all just reading the script humphhhh .. for JJ & LBS … thumbs up .. I can really feel the sadness & longing in Takkie n the clever LBS … I’am looking foward to this drama becoz of KJJ & LBS acting … soooo gud
i haven’t watch the complete episodes yet (just JJ’s cut). so i will judge this later. but i’m glad JJ’s got good review in this drama.
For me the character better is jj! the other characters don’t like me! U_U
“Why do the patients always appear coincidentally in front of the leading characters?” It’s too obvious and isn’t fun anymore.hehehehe. That is really true.Jae’s character needs some more action.
But I love Jaejoong character so mature and serious, i wish the Jackal bring out the Dorky Jaejoong, as in the review it’s Comedy movie
Yeah, I’m going to agree about the surgery. the father should have been the first brain operation he did, to have the most impact. The kid should have just been in a coma or something. I hope the writer remembers he has three male leads, and uses them alot in the future to move the story along. I mean how much do I need to see PMY look at SSH as if he it the best thing since sliced bread. They developed that story much too soon for it to be stretched out for the duration of the show. Which leads me to believe something good is coming up.
