The issue of JYJ being out-casted on air/broadcast programs has once again become a hot-button topic.
On June 4th’s broadcast of MBC “Come to Play,” child actress Kim Sohyun (who made an appearance on the program) took to her personal twitter and wrote “What is this? Why were the parts where I talked about Yoochun oppa edited out? I wanted to let everyone know about many interesting stories with Yoochun oppa. My birthday has ended bitterly.” On the 5th, Park Yoochun responded back via twitter, “Sohyun-ah thank you! Don’t be depressed, be strong Princess!”
In response to this controversy, the producers of “Come to Play” responded, “There were a lot of parts that exceeded the broadcast allotted time. Thus, there was nothing we could do but edit parts out.” It has already been 2 years since the members of JYJ started releasing albums under the group name JYJ. However, the situation is such that even until now they are unable to freely make an appearance on music/entertainment broadcasts.
Ever since JYJ was formed, fans’ frustration and disappointment (towards entertainment/music programs for editing out or preventing JYJ from making appearances on shows) are constant occurrences.
Even though Park Yoochun’s planned appearance on a program was canceled the eve of recording, an entertainment program that even normally promoted its own (broadcast station’s) dramas unusually showed only Yoochun’s legs when publicizing his drama—despite him being the lead role (for a drama on the same broadcast station). Even when entertainment news programs broad-cast clips of Kim Junsu’s FC MEN team during soccer games, Junsu’s face was completely edited out.
JYJ’s official music videos are naturally difficult to see on TV.
In May, Kim Junsu’s new song “Tarantallegra” created a sensation by achieving an all-kill on various music charts, selling over 100,000 copies pre-order alone, achieving Top 10 on Billboard World Music Division, etc. However, on TV there was absolutely no way to hear news of it. On a similar note, during the press conference for the release of his new album, Kim Junsu said, “I had to keep in mind the fact that I would not be able to have any broadcast activities.”
However, unlike music/entertainment programs, it isn’t as difficult to see JYJ in dramas.
In the recently finished SBS Wed-Thur drama “Rooftop Prince,” Park Yoochun acted as the main lead. Currently Kim Jaejoong is acting in his first historical piece in MBC weekend drama “Dr.Jin”. When it comes to news related to Hallyu Fever, JYJ has given many interviews. It seems that in dramas JYJ are able to appear as main leads and in news they are equally as influential. However, the “toxic” music and entertainment programs are the only places where it is impossible to see their faces. That is why the nickname “Entertainment/Music (program) Outcasts” came into fruition.
(T/N -The following is simply summaries of the remaining article):
JYJ’s original participation (and sudden cancellation) as representatives for Jeju Island’s 7 wonders was also cause for frustration and disappointment from fans.
JYJ are naturally aware of the situation (inability to appear on TV broadcast). Just recently on the 4th, Kim Junsu took to his twitter in regards to the 6th Musical Awards, “Today I received the popularity award and sang on live broadcast- but it again was for musical…still I was happy.”
However, despite this, producers continually say it was not because of external pressure. Their argument is that such is the nature of broadcasting. Things will be edited/cut out due to timing or certain other situations/circumstances and that it cannot be helped.

[Translator’s note: I’m sure everyone thinks these producers are talking bull-sh*t]
~ totally agree with ya @@’ … they were givin’ lots of reason !!!
yes,, they just say nonsense
This is complete bullsh!t >[]<
To producers: Yes, I’m sure it’s just coincidence that it’s always JYJ left out. *heavy sarcasm*
As a fan I have done with complaining, screaming, shouting, feeling depress, sad etc. with this issue.
I’m becoming more like the boys….positive and ambitious towards their future and never look back. They are popular now than before because of their perseverance and hard works. If the ban ended, yes a very good news and a bonus to them…but if not they still can survive…. look at them now… stronger, happier, optimistic….yep, I like what they have become now.
A+
let us wait when the law suit end and see whether they’re still ban or not after that… if they are then it is those coward broadcasting station’s loss….
They will definitely still be banned =____= The lawsuit is just an excuse.
Yup.. The producers are talking bullsh*t.. They just fu*cking coward to admitt that they having pressure from SME..
Hope SME & all the cronies will pay for what they’ve done to JYJ & burn in hell..
Be strong JYJ.. Don’t bother to taking revenge to them, lady karma knows how to do it better ^^
Justice maybe blind.. But the talent can’t be silent.. Lets make the world hearing JYJ singing out loud.. Proud of you JYJ ! ^^~♥
All I can say is Korea’s entertainment industry is so fickle and a user. What’s new? they can ban them all they want, but I’ll still continue to follow JYJ’s every activity and purchase their CD’s & watch their concerts. and their CF’s products if I see one in my country.
and besides… let’s not all forget the power of internet… JYJ is not just popular in Korea or Japan, but internationally to.
@masi
“let’s not all forget the power of internet… JYJ is not just popular in Korea or Japan, but internationally too”
This is what I choose to focus on. Before the ban JYJ were largely known only in Korea and Japan. Since the ban they have spread the story of their quest for freedom, their music and their amazingly positive message around the globe. Now each of those pockets of fans in all of those new countries are growing. I know it’s tempting to obsess on what the country of S. Korea is or is not doing, but take a look at a world map and see for yourself. S. Korea would fit inside the state of California in the U.S. where I live. it’s a tiny country and customs there are problematical as regards the concept of authority figures. The country tolerates and turns a blind eye to an organization who has been acting exactly like the Mafia. Seemingly, there is nothing anyone can or will do but write veiled references to the “difficulties” in the press from time to time. That’s just really not going to be enough.
So I choose to celebrate JYJ getting out into the wider world and allowing their fans from many nations to embrace them warmly.
who needs those tv stations anyway? {(>_<)} most people nowadays don't watch tv anymore, they're more into internet and come to think of it, they're even much bigger than those idols who are able to appear on those 凸(¬‿¬)凸 tv stations!!!
so, JYJ Ganbatte! がんばって!
You’re so right. Most of the young generation and working class are hooked on their computers. Take my household for example, we watch tv but on HBO or other movie channels, if we want entertainment or music related, it’s easier and more fun to just browse in the internet, we can watch what we want at our own time. And we don’t even know some of our local artists/stars who could be seen on tv anytime.
If only this JYJ outcasting happen during NO_internet era, SM should have been happy long before. I don’t think Jae Chun Su took that risky move if they had not foreseen a possibility to survive outside SM. Yes, they said that they were willing to become farmers, but like all smart people do, there must be a feasibility study what to do, there must be a laid out plan- options 1,2,3 and so on, and I’m sure the thought of internet was one of their strongest weapon. They were not foolish to take a suicidal move, yes, they might fail but for sure they should have thought of higher survival possibility. Thank God they did survive !
Wise words @kris 😀 JYJ are intelligent men who know enough to have a contingency plan in place. They also have one of the smartest fandoms around 😀
@kris and Barbara D. Bolton I so agree with you both! ٩(-̮̮̃-̃)۶ i’m proud to have such smart idols! (*^ -^*)
SK’s music industry can go take a hike for all I care. Ok, so you won’t show them on TV musically unless you absolutely have to. But please remember this…WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.
You have not stopped JYJ from being popular. You have not stopped JYJ from making music. You have not stopped JYJ from going aroung the globe to appear before their fans. You have not stopped them from becoming well-paid from the earnings off the sweat from their brows. You have not stopped, nor will you be able to stop, their fans from being with them for the long haul.
The only thing you have managed to do is make yourselves look ridiculous and childish in the eyes of the world community. It’s ok if this doesn’t bother you. It is still a fact that remains in tact whether you do or not. 😉
Have a nice day. PEACE
My thoughts exactly…I over the SK music ‘click’. I rather support JYJ as I have and watch them sing from their hearts. Believe it or not, some good things have come from the ban. The members can do pretty much whatever they want with their music. I couldn’t see SM ever letting Junsu out of that cutesy act…poor guy. lol. We all know he didn’t plan for Jaejoong to ever talk.
@7cinta
” The members can do pretty much whatever they want with their music. I couldn’t see SM ever letting Junsu out of that cutesy act…poor guy. lol. We all know he didn’t plan for Jaejoong to ever talk.”
Precisely right. “Baby Su” would have been cutesy forever and Jaejoong would have been relegated to being the “girly looking dumb one.” What a travesty that would have been! Now that they are out and authentically themselves, stretching out and claiming all their talents and great intelligence, we forget the tiny box they were forced into at SM. It’s a blessing every day that they are free now and I know they think so too.
“….. showed only Yoochun’s legs…”
this is just…LOL!! I think the broadcasting company should at least try make an appearance of JYJ in their show. Sure the rating is killing.. But, they are brainless .. without sm idols, kpop still alive right.
jyj not performing in music shows and arent invited to variety shows are quite understandable, but editing their faces and simply ignoring their presence when they were obviously the MAIN FOCUS of the event was…i don’t know what to say..how low can they get
Just wanna share this happy news with those of you who miss this:
“[Gaon Chart] XIA Tarantallegra sold 122,000 copies in May, highest among solo albums released in 2010, 2011&2012 so far ^^” cr:Xiah_press
Dont be too stressed, everyone 🙂
i missed that!!! Thank you! You just made my day~! Ahh! Any pic? link? i want to bask in that news..
You can check the amount of copies sold here: http://www.gaonchart.co.kr/main/section/album/list.gaon
But, for the comparison, i think you have to go through chart for each year XD
@juliang
Thanks for the wonderful news! You might want to tip the admins so they can post this for all to see 🙂
And counting! 😉 Guess all those folks who asked, can stop wondering what happened to those 100K pre-sales!
Certainly the made Korea missing out on GOOD songs! Which kpopish songs out there can beat JYJ? Come onnn! WHAT MUSIC WILL YOU LISTEN TO HEY?!!!!
*they
I can’t help but wonder about the power of whomever is behind all this. How is it that they can handle every station, every show to their will? Do they own these stations?! What’s behind all of this? Could they be afraid that once JYJ is on musical and entertainment shows, they could single handedly dominate TV as a whole? I can only think this is it! Otherwise, what are they afraid of?! Imagine…if JYJ is doing as good as they are right now, being “outcasted” and all (because really, they are HUGE!… worldwide!), how could it be if they were allowed to participate on national TV?! Oh well…there’s nothing to do; let’s keep supporting them in their solo and group activities (we are too a huge and powerful force, you know?…no one can stop us rooting for them!!) until the fools behind the banning come to their senses.
It is not every station, but the entertainment (variety shows) and music section of every station. SMe (and their pact) have a lot of influence in these two areas since these areas are the most dependent on idol groups. That’s the reason why JYJ can always appear on ads, dramas, and musicals. Those areas don’t care (much) about SMe’s idols since they are not the most talented and there are always other actors/models/singers with similar popularity.
@jaime
Also, I have read that SM owns the land on which sit several of the broadcast stations. They are landlords, in a way. But mostly I think it is threats that no SM artist will perform for that entertainment show any more that keeps the TV shows hamstrung. If they’d just GROW A PAIR and tell them, “Fine. We’ll just go with other companys’ artists.” that would be the end of the ban. But they don’t do that. Perhaps there are cash kickbacks to higher-ups involved as well. We just don’t know, but the overall Sleaze Factor is very much in evidence.
That owning the land thing is probably not true. I believe the misunderstanding came from reading about SME buying land and building it’s own facility. They moved from a much smaller place. Those TV companies have been around alot longer than SME. SME didn’t come into being until around 1998 or so. If one goes back and re-reads the Wikipedia piece you will see the difference.
@BAFfie
“hat owning the land thing is probably not true. I believe the misunderstanding came from reading about SME buying land and building it’s own facility. ”
Well, that’s a relief. So that’s one bullshit reason we don’t have to pay attention to anymore. So the next and last bullshit reason is “Uuuuhhhh…. oh, no, there’s no problem, we just ran out of time….. heh heh”
Well, the threat of denying their artists is the really big issue. But then again, as has been stated by some of our sisters, this just gives JYJ a more desireable quality. They are not over exposed. Granted, this poses a hardship on domestic fans, but the day is going to come when Lady Karma sets things to right.
What happened KBSworld broadcasted ‘Tarantallegra’ this week( I myself watched) at K-pop hot clip and also ‘In haven’ when it was released? Was it a mistake or THE PUBLIC PRESSURE?
hmm..
i think KBSWorld more to people outside SK, as international viewer. so they dont need to afraid of ‘outside pressure’, since it broadcasted not in SK (they have KBS n KBS2 in SK), but maybe eventho people in SK could catch KBSWorld, but their market target are international viewer, so maybe they dont want to look bad to i-viewers, esp since JYJ Ifanbase are very very strong.
I think you’re rigEht.I just thought they have the same politics for international fans too. As long as we FOLLOW THE INSIDE ACTIVI TIES OF JYJ and, in fact of all South Korean culture and media events. Here, in Romania, there are a lot of groups interested in South Korean life and culture so we read a lot of online news magazines. So KBSworld can’t lie to us so easy. And there are communities like this where we can take information.Thanks!
they should also mentioned that the Come To Play team have sent press released before informing people that they will air SoHyun’s story abt their closeness (with Chun). so people who dont follow JYJ issue can understand that it wasnt editting issue, but it was done on purpose to editted him out. and they should also mentioned that they have cancelled Ms Ripley eps before, because they request to excluded YooChun (who act as male lead), but the other main casts rejected the request (and the eps changed to SMTown special).
but at least the article mentioned Junsu’s Tarantallegra became top 10 in Billboard World Music Album Chart =) and yes, keep mentioning KBS Jeju N7W campaign incident too, please, and also mentioned what Ifans oe even non fan have thought about it in the regards how this make SK look to International eyes n the result of the concert (in which such a BIG flop).
It’s extremely stupid, these industries behavior but like I said, better promotion is through word of mouth ANYWAY…we don’t need them. Everyone just continue to support JYJ and spread their awesomeness to people who don’t know.
Same effing excuses as always, shame on Korea entertainment industry of outcasting the best, JYJ has shown so much perseverance against it all and should be proudly recognized but still shoose to ridiculously give explenations that only those that don’t know what they are all about will buy, easy money makers by being bought by the evilness that know what they are against and know too that if JYJ are seen as an amazing artists, these evil ones little by little will seem to dissapeared by been seen as “THE LOOSERS” they are and finding hard to accept the tittle!
It’s been a long time since I lost any hope in the kpop music industry.
I couldnt care less about what those producers says.
JYJ fighting! You and you only. ^^
i think Ministry of Media should interfere and force all broadcast channels to allow jyj perform . because all of us now what’s happens isn’t fair and it’s bad for Korea image . and you now what’s make me angry jyj is Ambassador for Korea and they can’t even perform .
This Broadcasting company are lack of PROFESSIONALISM…..In any business you have always apply PROFESSIONALISM, please learn how to use it. Treat all not only JYJ “EQUALLY, FAIR, JUST, IMPARTIAL, UNBIASED, DISPASSIONATE & OBJECTIVE please put all this terminology on your BOOK OF DICTIONARY so that you know how to apply PROFESSIONALISM on your field. YOU REALLY NEED THAT BADLY.
i think no matter what JYJ try, they will be unable to appear on TV if SM keeps to play dirty tricks with 4ever exc because of external pressure’
I don’t want to mention to SM cuz they’re 4ever BS! (no language can describe how awful they’re) but I wanna say about the K laws! they’re definitely coward! how can they let SM do whatever they want even they gave the warning no interfere to JYJ. I’m really really really disappointed on K laws
@miki4yuu
And keep in mind that the government of SK is also SPONSORING, aka paying to under-write, SMTown concerts around the world.
So that’s how “roughly equivalent” JYJ’s concerts are to SM’s foreign counterparts. JYJ goes on their own nickel and does a 90 minute show. SM’s acts go and each of them gets to do 2 probably lip-synced songs before it’s someone else’s turn. SM pockets the government money.
No doubt, SM doesn’t have a THING to worry about with this game-plan as long as they comp enough SK journalists to come along and write rave reviews of the shows.
😦
“No doubt, SM doesn’t have a THING to worry about with this game-plan as long as they comp enough SK journalists to come along and write rave reviews of the shows.” -> I heard that news before when SM’d SMtown concert in Paris -> how cheap they’re! totally opposite when JYJ came to Chile & Peru, this’s the big difference between the true artists and the frame singers! how poor SM’s singers are
Thank you Newsen for this article.
Just looking at the photo of the three individuals, extraordinarily talented plus CHARACTER,
they should be outcasted for they seem like a chemotherapy to those malignantly cancerous entertainment and music programs in SK!
the only best thing that could happen is a more powerful force gets so pissed with SMEnt and its cronies .. pissed enough to want to just troll them by getting JYJ into entertainment shows… a girl can hope right
🙂
@jenknight18
“the only best thing that could happen is a more powerful force gets so pissed with SMEnt and its cronies .. pissed enough to want to just troll them by getting JYJ into entertainment shows…”
My friend – hello. 🙂
Well, there certainly are other important entertainment companies – Big Bang’s for starters. Also, there are so many indie artists working in SK, and great ones too, needless to say. But at least so far, none of them have been willing to step up and go against SM. It’s understandable. They can only bring trouble on themselves and for no financial gain. That appears to be the common bottom line here. Will it benefit me financially? NO? Forget it then.
hmmm…. lucky me, television is not my thing… so i don’t have to pay any attention to TV shows… i don’t give a damn to those broadcast stations… maybe their company is as big as a giant, but their guts? as small as tiny bean.
As long as there is JYJ family, the boys no need to worry anything.. they have their fans heart as the stage…
Hey JYJ boys, keep up the good work… don’t worry… my heart and my eyes, goes for you only ^^
@Yuya_chan
“:hmmm…. lucky me, television is not my thing… so i don’t have to pay any attention to TV shows… i don’t give a damn to those broadcast stations… ”
Well…. you’re so right. For most international fans, whether JYJ can be broadcast in S. Korea or not is pretty much of a wash. Really, it doesn’t matter to us one way or the other and certainly doesn’t lessen our vital and growing i-fandom. For us, S. Korea looks like a tiny country in S.E. Asia and we wonder why we should really care what goes on there. All we want is JYJ, their music, their wonderful presences (which we already have in the dramas they are perfectly free to perform in) and their spectacular live shows, which quite frankly we’ll never get enough of no matter how frequently they visit our own countries. The sole, solitary factor in question here is that it matters to THEM, to the members, to be able to perform freely in their homeland, which they dearly love. For us, they could emigrate to any number of our own countries and we would never stop pinching ourselves to believe our luck at getting them.
And so it goes.
For me we need to settled this issue once and for all, definitely JYJ should not allow this incident lightly they need to make a proper legal action on this matter…. because that is their right? Let them teach those Broadcasting a lesson to allow themselves to used by manipulating their business industry because their Artist voice out their rights. Since this issue already in the court and waiting for the decision so just wait. The complainant and the respondent are oblige to pay for the damages once the decision was release, right? Therefore, stop pestering the JYJ, let them to move on stop manipulating others company. And the other company don’t allow yourself to be used.
@pazpranz
The problem, as I see it, is that even were a judgement to be handed down, would SM really be actually forced somehow to pay it? How, exactly? I think they would just quietly refuse to pay and no one would be able to force them to do it. Enforcing a judgement would be a whole other section of the justice system. What is the likelihood that the people SM has sway over are not entrenched in this area of government? First, stall a court decision for as long as possible, then, simply refuse to actually pay the judgement. I think this is SM’s strategy.
Hello JYJ fans
I don’t really catch up about the lawsuit issue.
When will the lawsuit between JYJ and SME over?
@taranXIAllagra
Your guess is as good as ours. No one knows.
Despite this contemptible blocking by these programs, JYJ has managed to succeed, grow, and remain resilient. They continue to re-invent themselves over and over again: from holding a photo exhibit, showing their film “The Day” in theaters, holding a worldwide tour, appearing in musicals, dramas, and CFs, etc – more and different sorts of people are coming to know and gain respect/admiration for them.
And in the countless instances where we have seen them blocked, banned, or some falsehood was spread, JYJ continues to be professional and to carry themselves with dignity, qualities these programs/companies obviously don’t possess.
I sincerely wish that JYJ eventually has the opportunity to appear on these programs because it’s a sincere desire of theirs but, I also have no doubt that even without them they will continue to succeed ~ it may be bumpy at times, but between their determination and the support of a growing global fan-base, I know they can do it.
Thank You Newsen for this article and pointing out the ridiculous excuses given for not allowing JYJ on these shows~We’ve heard it before…BS! As ifans we can keep our support for JYJ alive with word of mouth tactics; continue to let your friends and friends of friends listen to their music, watch their MVs, or getting local radio stations to play their albums; college campus stations are a good place to start. In the end…JYJ<333

When JYJ left SME, they already have been known what will be happen. Now three years since they stand in their own feet , I don’t think they worry about appear in these broadcast station ( I don’t give a damn about broadcast station). I can hear they sing and perform in internet and buy their CD and Album on line so who need tv. Let SME use power ban JYJ but not for long now. JYJ are very clever they find the way to survive (Tour around the world).
yeah, and it seems that they are very famous in Korea too although they can’t appear on TV! they goes well with the saying “too much of something is not good”, they don’t appear that often which makes people crave for them! JYJ daebak ❤
@kate duong
NO, of course JYJ don’t need to go on all of those mostly silly shows on SK TV. They have pioneered alternative marketing and made maximum use of social networking. They have awesome, active fan pages, lots of them, the best of them, I like to think, being JYJ3. The only reason we are even still talking about that aspect of the blocking that SM is doing is because the members of JYJ themselves WANT to appear on SK TV. To them, this is important and they grieve the fact that they cannot appear. For the rest of us, especially the international fans, this became a total non-issue long ago. JYJ don’t NEED SK entertainment shows. They are bigger and better than that now. They are more important to the legacy, to the history of the SK music scene than that now. They are hugely popular, that is growing every day, without appearing. They have transcended the SK music scene model. They just have not freely acknowledged that yet.
