Xiah Junsu (left) and Hero Jaejoong (right) are members of the K-Pop band JYJ, which has a saesang following.
As an overly passionate, silly geek, when I like something, I don’t just “like” it. I tend to get excited in a very specific way, going into full fan mode fairly quickly (see this drawing for a visual explanation).
Once I get rolling, I become a constant broadcaster, excitedly telling my friends about my newest obsession, while I wave my hands around in the air for emphasis.
This excitement is called “fangirling” (or fanboying, as the case may be), and it’s fairly common behavior when it comes to the nerd world. In fact, it even extends beyond nerds: Stamp collectors, vintage record experts, and doll fanatics have their moments, too. We all light up when we get a chance to talk about the thing we love. When we share our enthusiasm, we welcome another person into our inner circle.
Sometimes, though, in the midst of marathoning yet another Asian drama with impossibly good-looking leading men, I’ll catch myself wondering: Is my fandom escapism? And can it go too far?
All pleasures can lead to escapism, but where do they cross over into obsession? Are you obsessive if you spend each year crafting yet another insanely detailed Final Fantasy costume to wear to Dragon Con, or are you merely nurturing your creative pursuits? Is an encyclopedic knowledge of Star Trek history a good thing, or does the need to keep it up-to-date eventually edge out the necessities of life?
If there’s one sect of fandom that’s all about creating worlds to escape to, it’s fan fiction. Magan Cubed, who has been actively involved in the fanfic community for over a decade, said fandom is usually a harmless social networking tool. But at its worst, it can become dangerous, leading to stalking or harassment, she said.
“This tends to happen when a camp of fans become overly entitled,” Cubed said, “They begin to feel that they have a say in how the source material is written, presented, cast, etcetera, and that the creative staff is wrong for not following their wishes. This often presents itself as a sense of ownership over the actors of a film or television series, and has resulted in threats against the actor and his or her loved ones, both online and in person at conventions.”
In a recent example, a contingent of fans of the show “Supernatural” began calling themselves “The Silent Majority” and started a campaign to write the upcoming season as they saw fit, claiming the show’s writers had betrayed the core viewership.
“This group had also sent threatening and invasive messages to members of the cast and their wives, and attempted to get cast members fired from the show,” Cubed said. “Ultimately this campaign went nowhere, but it was a scary reminder of how some fans can lose sight of reality.”
This sense of entitlement is typical stuff on the internet, especially in the form of seemingly endless –and ultimately harmless – rants on fan forums.
America has seen it’s share of fan-turned-obsessive, as is evidenced bycelebrity stalking cases. Across the globe in South Korea, there’s a completely different form of over-the-top fan behavior going on.
Korean pop stars have their own special brand of stalker, called “saesang (pronounced ‘say-seng’).” These female groups go to extremes to enter the personal lives of the idols they adore, working closely together so they can achieve success. They are often seen hovering in the background of photos of pop idols, sometimes crammed up against the windows with their faces pressed to the glass in hopes of getting a glimpse of the stars.
They have been known to work around the clock to pursue celebrities in taxis, break into their homes, and buy and sell their personal information online, including identification numbers and telephone numbers, said Bianca Gomez, who runs Korean pop culture blog Angry K-Pop Fan.
K-pop stars JYJ have been one of many bands that have been targeted by saesang fans, but they are one of the few that reacted publicly to them, causing waves of discussion in the fervent fan communities.
Unlike paparazzi, saesang have one aim only: To get as close to the idols as possible, she said.
“The extreme behaviors and acts [saesangs] exhibit make it hard to believe that their motivations are just as simple as that of any other fan,” she said. Healthy fans, she said, admire their favorite idol and are dedicated to supporting them all the way.
“In Korea, [saesangs] are walking paradoxes: they cause harm and distress though they don’t mean to; they love the celebrity but seek complete possession of them; and they are deemed as outcasts by their peers,” Gomez said.
Shunned by the bulk of their collective fandoms, saesangs socialize in self-managed, highly organized networks, she said.
“They are assigned responsibilities and fulfill them impressively, their information-finding skills are top-notch, and their ability to stay connected with each other and keep up with the fast-paced schedules of their idols is astounding,” Gomez said.
This social organization sets saesangs apart from the solitary celebrity stalker we’re used to hearing about in the US, Gomez explained.
So do Korean laws concerning privacy.
“We do not have much experience in protecting privacy,” Lee Jin-ki, a law professor at Sungkyunkwan University, said. South Korea, he said, is in a transitional period, changing from a group-oriented to an individual-oriented community. As such, saesangs are not arrested for invasion of privacy. They can, however, be arrested for defamation, blackmail or threat.
“Anyone can get severe punishment for insulting someone both offline and online. It’s not about whether or not we have the laws, but rather about people’s mindsets,” Lee said.
James Turnbull, lecturer and consultant on Korean issues, says the saesang phenomenon is just another necessary tool that the Korean advertising industry uses to keep all eyes on their idols. This may be another reason authorities tend to look the other way when it comes to saesang activity, Turnbull said.
“Obsessive saesang behavior is merely a logical, albeit extreme, side-effect. And it has had a long time to develop, too. Middle-aged women, with the financial resources to be saesangs, began dominating fanclubs in the mid-2000s. We’re only going to see more of it so long as illegal downloading and the current glut of music groups forces management companies to rely on endorsements for profits,” Turnbull said.
Mindy Mechanic, a clinical psychologist specializing in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and an associate professor of psychology at California University, said the behavior demonstrated by saesangs is profoundly culture-bound, and must always be understood in that context.
The group dynamic among these types of fans allows a sense of anonymity when the members violate the personal boundaries of celebrities, Mechanic said. In the case of saesang fans, it’s easier to forget that what they are doing is disrespectful because they are surrounded by others who will join their cause.
But if they pursue a celebrity on their own, Mechanic said, it may mean facing consequences for their actions toward the person they romanticize.
“Many stalkers, even those stalking public figures and celebrities, are mentally ill and laboring under false beliefs. However, these group fans are likely more like groupies … acting in concert with other adoring fans and attempting to get close to or connected to their greatness,” she said.
Gomez agreed.
“There’s a sense of importance and identity that is fostered by not only ‘connecting’ with a celebrity, but by finding other fans via their involvement in these networks,” she said. “In the case of sasaeng fans, the pursuit of a fandom gives them something their own lives, and the people in them, are failing to provide.”
In your mind, what’s the difference between a hobby, a passion, and an interest that’s gone too far? Is there any difference between being a devoted fan and being an obsessed fan?

I took a break to answer. I find that it is not as simple as I’d like because sometimes fans that aren’t saesangs say some boderline creepy shit but I think the answer lies in what these experts are saying; these people’s power lies in numbers. I’m pretty sure they know perfectly well that they are harming the people they harass. Proof is the recording where they taunted and insulted Jaejoong. There is no way they don’t know rather what they might be hard pressed to say alone they find easier to say in company of like-minded individuals. Makes perfect sense given the fact that 1. they are females, 2. this is Korean culture and 3. People of ALL cultures and ethnicities find it easier to “lose” themselves or go with the flow the more people around them.
And I also agree that these people have something wrong in their lives but I don’t think they harass their “favorite” idols in an attempt to fill some void. That makes no real sense unless they are literally imagining that they are someone important in the lives of these idols which would imply delusional disorder. Maybe when they accept that they in fact are no one to these idols, more so they are resented….then they flip.
The examples they gave of dedicated fans exercising their creativity is great and all but saesangs just hack and social network….that is not really a “talent” but oh well.
What I wanna ask is how they think that entertainment companies allow this behavior as a form of controlling their idols. It does make some sense but I think this needs more in order to flesh out. Wish I could interview these experts.
I think what they meant is that through saessangs the company can keep an eye on their celebs in case they are dating…..and basically control all other aspects of their lives. Which is scary. Also, as seen with the JYJ scandals the saessangs may even be paid sometimes to tape record stars at their bad moments so the company can use it to threaten these stars. Etc.
Thanks for the explanation.
That makes sense. I definitely know that is what they did to JYJ but do you think they would go so far as to do this to idols still within the company “in case” something happens? If we could find something like that….we could destroy SME….but I doubt they would ever get their hands dirty when they have goons willing to take the heat for them.
@retrokim
I think a lot of the role of companies is not so much in directly sponsoring or helping the sasaengs, but rather in the fact that they REALLY promote their artists as idols – as individual people, not just musicians. In other words, they’re really not selling music so much as selling people (figuratively speaking). So for most fans this just results in them being willing to buy all of the products that aren’t music. This isn’t new or unique in the music world, but SKorea has perfected it and expanded it to an enormous scale – so much so that groups have a fanbase even BEFORE they release music.
So the companies are COUNTING on fans to literally fall in love with idols, and if a few sasaengs take it to the extreme, then to them that usually just means more press coverage for them and more proof that people love their idols.
Oh my god! I read my answer and omitted an important thing. Obviously there are fans who are nothing like this and never will be. I talk about the fans I think could well be saesangs but the only thing keeping them away from this is that they don’t speak Korean or live in Korea or have the money to follow their idols everywhere. JYJ fans are particularly sensitive about this. I have read many comments about idols in general and some fans…they really freak me out. One swore at Jaejoong and called him an idiot because he demanded privacy. This girl (I’m guessing) said that idols will never have privacy and should just “accept” this.
@retrokim
“One swore at Jaejoong and called him an idiot because he demanded privacy. This girl (I’m guessing) said that idols will never have privacy and should just “accept” this.”
Sadly a lot of people would agree with that comment. I don’t know if it’s jealousy/envy or what, but a lot of people think celebrities have no right to have a private life or any privacy. & if you argue with them, they just glibly retort that “that’s the price they pay for being famous.” Being famous doesn’t make someone less of a human being though, & personally, I think people in the public eye could well crave more privacy than most, simply because it’s so often so brutally taken away from them. As for the saesengs, I agree with your comment about them knowing full well that they are distressing & harassing their idols. & unlike this article, I’m not going to call what they do love or an expression of love. No way do you do the things saesengs do to someone you truly love.
A+++++++
That was the one thing that pissed me off. They don’t know what they are doing? Do you tell someone to kill themselves and then go, “Oh! I didn’t mean any harm by it!” What a load of bull. Once again JYJ are doing the right thing but the rest of KpopLand doesn’t give them any credit.
There’s a BIG difference!!! I’m not standing outside your dwelling in winter weather on the off-chance i might catch a glimpse of you, neither am i following you at breakneck speed down a public highway in a taxi; I’m am not trespassing on your property, which includes the places you work or frequent. I will not be trying to illegally obtain your personal info and pass it around to other nut jobs to further harass and interfere with your day to day activities. Most of all I will not be attempting to grope, grab, or slap you!!!!!!!! If this is the way so-called LOVE is expressed by some people, then you can keep it!
this article is bad or good for jyj? 😦
Why don’t you read it? I found nothing insulting.
JYJ became the center of this discussion. There’s mix responds…some curse our boys for hitting the so called ‘weak girls’ and some are defending our boys ( including me ) saying that this is form of harassment and they react to it.
Oh yeah, definitely but she asked what the article itself was about and the article made no mention of that. It is just people talking about saesangs and what enables them to do what they do. The writer went into more detail about the show Supernatural than with JYJ. I’m kinda disappointed because this is CNN, I would have liked for them to give the details of the harrassment JYJ go through. Maybe international exposure will force people to do something since they think these freaks are “innocent girls” or that this is a good way of keeping tabs on their talent. That consultant said that many are also women in their 30s, definitely not girls anymore.
I also defend JYJ on this. I remember Jessica of SNSD said that she was stalked by some dude on her way home. He started running after her and she said she was lucky that she was near a friend’s house where she hid and that didn’t even stop him. The only reason he went away is because he heard people coming. If she had needed to deck him in order to get to safety or for him to leave her alone NO ONE would have judged her for it. It is definitely a double-standard. If you are some creepy degenerate then you deserve a good deck in the face regardless of gender. Most of the people who bash JYJ have only read the recording posted in AllKpop and say that even so JYJ are still men and that they should call the police…blah blah blah but the police don’t do anything. Must suck even more if you are under an agency like SME cause they probably sent them in the first place…..It is a very ugly situation.
seriously… why cant people realize that they are humans just like everyone else??
they’re good people but dont waste your time obsessing over them.
just get a life
I agree with you. While we are busy adoring our idol, don’t forget that we also have our own life to struggle in
Reblogged this on JYJ's Fan Worlds.
Seems like just another redundant article, until you hit the link to “that reacted publicly to them,” that article and the sentence in which the link is posted is a bit biased I feel. The whole being “violent” towards “fans” sentiment they are going with in the linked article is misleading and fairly subversive.
This article seems less an expose or investigative report and more on the side of these fluff pieces being churned out trying to “understand and explain” the minds of these obsessive stalkers. How does this contribute towards stemming the problem? Well no crap they have psychological issues and are strengthened by their anonymous herd mentality. I would have really loved if these people with doctorates that they consulted could come up with some solutions instead of identifying a problem that has been identified, repeatedly, hell there was a K-drama about it.
They even said that the problem won’t go away anytime soon. Really inspiring stuff huh?
The one thing I found interesting is that one of them said that this is not going to be an easy problem to fix because the entertainment companies are the ones who think this is a good way to control their idols. If that is indeed the case and the police collaborate because they think this is harmless then I would say it would be a good lawsuit. Not against the saesangs who anonymously group up and hide but the entertainment companies for failing to protect their idols. If these companies demand loyalty from their idols for housing, feeding and work material then it is logical for idols to demand protection from saesangs as well. I mean if SME can
They would need police reports to prove that they did indeed go to the police and if they can, to also collect any evidence. Some of these saesangs send bloodied menstrual pads, threatening letters in blood or red ink, record phone calls from them etc etc, any proof that these people are threatening their safety and rights. Some even break in their homes so they gotta have some proof.
What makes me queasy is kpop groups are a big ball of sissies in general and they won’t do it. I read that some girl was following Yunho around and he asked her to please not follow him “for today” because he was going to do something important……it was on tumblr and the girl who posted this GUSHED! I was like….Yunho you big fat p**** why would you have to politely ask this freak who stalks you to come back some other day? WTF! But then I felt bad for him because he has no other way to get them to go away without incurring their wrath. But generally……they are self-defeating cowards who accept this in just how it is and they need to suck it up……yeah…..really sad. Anyways my long-winded point is that *if* a lawsuit is the only solution for the moment then only a group like JYJ would have the *ahem* cojones*** to do it.
I hope I didn’t bore you with my answer mkverse!
***I mean if SME could take EVERYTHING away from JYJ when they left; fangifts, their compositions etc etc then that implies that these companies believe they provide everything for their idols. That should include protection. Bodyguards in crowded places aren’t enough therefore it is a failure on part of the company to protect their idols to the best of their abilities since they still manage to harass them and sneak in their houses.
Also it CAN’T be JYJ cause JYJ hires CJeS not the other way around. It HAS to be a group under SME or JYP but again…..I doubt it will ever happen.

this post , its style and timing appear at this moment at CNN…curious,
post with a pic ONLY with Jae & Junsu…
( omitting critical thinking and a mass media pic make this weird)
Quite ironic that CNN writes a big article on saesangs but have yet to address fan pressure to write about corruption in the Korean entertainment industry and how it is affecting JYJ.
I understand the exasperation of the idols to have lived that as simple “lambda”. Approximately 8 10 years ago, a very famous English singer came to spend holidays, to rest in France, to his stylist who had his country house just next to ours. At the end of week, there were constantly fans who squatted in front of the house, day and night, I do not say to you the noise, the dirts etc. It had become the hell, and after several calls to the gendarmerie, to the city hall, nothing made for it and unfortunately the singer had to leave! There is not only in Korea where exists this kind of nobody but maybe that in Korea they are more virulent and I pity the artists who undergo the consequences.
Definitely. Remember the Britney Spears thing? I don’t how people turned to making fun of her. I could definitely see that the stress got to her and she suffered a meltdown yet all you could see was crass jokes at her expense. The paparazzi harassed her day and night so much that she went almost insane. She was going through a difficult time and people had ZERO compassion for her other than her fans and people mocked them as well.
My husband, my parents and I have never understood how these fans had obtained the address of the stylist. Indeed, his country house and ours were situated in a place lost of the French countryside. Further to this event, the stylist sold his house and we had the tranquillity.
Disappointed overall that an article in CNN would be this….lacking in depth. It really did nothing to either educate or (attempy to) solve the problem of celeb-stalking and added nothing to what we already know. I’ve seen fans in forums or twtr make more insightful comments on the issue than this
