Idol group JYJ have prevailed over the lawsuit on the exclusivity contract filed against Avex Japan.
According to Tokyo District Court, avex should suspend the act of claiming exclusive management of JYJ in Japan. The court ordered avex to pay reparations amounting to 660 Million JPY to c-jes, JYJ’s management agency.
This ruling meant a lot for JYJ. When JYJ separated from TVXQ, they had to accept constraints on their activities due to various lawsuits. Last November 2009, JYJ received an injunction for the suspension of their exclusive contract with SM. They signed an agreement in February 2010 with avex amidst false rumors like the c-jes ceo being involved in organized crime group.
Due to the litigation, they turned to dramas and musicals. The fact that they can’t work in Japan was a major blow, despite having a considerable fanbase.
In fact, it is not unreasonable to say that TVXQ is used as the starting point of Hallyu wave in Japan. Currently, idol groups Kara, snsd, beast and 2PM are gaining popularity in Japan, but they pale in comparison with TVXQ’s popularity in the past in terms of depth and width of the fanbase.
With the court ruling, JYJ is expected to lead the recent Hallyu wave which has recently stagnated.
According to local sources, the Hallyu wave was reduced compared to before. The Dokdo dispute has contributed significantly to the decline of hallyu.
Resumption of JYJ’s activities in Japan is being viewed positively since they can target both music and drama markets. JYJ member Park Yuchun has solidified his position as an actor in his recent dramas.
Park Yuchun has increasingly gaining popularity for starring in several dramas such as Rooftop Prince, Miss Ripley, and I Miss You. His first drama, Sungkyungkwan Scandal, was successful in Japan. This will help in the resumption of their activities in Japan.
In prevailing over their lawsuits, fans are hopeful that it is the start of JYJ’s full-fledged activities. It is noteworthy that their comeback could be a game-changer and can lead to structural changes in the future of the hallyu wave in Japan.

Nicely said! *thumbs up* “JYJ is expected to lead the hallyu wave in Japan which has recently stagnated”
I can’t wait to see them in Japan again!!!
They’re always a powerful hope!
Let’s soar, JYJ!!
Seriously who gives a crap about the Hallyu Wave? It ebbs and flows all the time when any political tension or a convenient scapegoat rises between the groups of intolerant people in Japan and South Korea. I just want JYJ to not have to be burdened and treated unfairly. They built a powerful fanbase and they have talent so they will get to make good music and promote normally. End of story.
Where is this Hallyu crap even coming from? Isn’t is something we should thank father Lee Soo Man for? If the others are having problems that is their business not JYJ’s. They sure as hell don’t stretch out a hand to help JYJ so what makes them think they can use them for their little wave? If they make *such* great music then JYJ’s presence in a fair environment shouldn’t hurt anyone. Let the sheeple take care of the Hallyu wave and just leave JYJ alone to do what they do best.
@retrokim
It’s been my conviction that the hallyu wave is little more than an advertising gimmick, a convenient fiction mutually agreed upon by all the big entertainment companies. I believe LSM was responsible for starting it, as he has been responsible for promoting so much other false information, statistics, etc. with an eye towards further enriching himself and his cronies I guess he must have realized long ago that people in Korea doesn’t take much serious notice about what really goes on in their music business just as long as it entertains them and regularly reassures them that Korea is going to be a leader of tomorrow’s global market for music. This makes Koreans feel good and that’s exactly where they stop paying attention.
Jyj is considered a japanese artist…ppl want to relate them to hallyu wave to gain something from them again…=.=
If I’m Avex or Sment, I’ll be very very…VERY worry right now if JYJ allow to promote their activities in Japan, with better resume, JYJ will deff be flying high up there. Jaejoong is one of the most popular SK star there…no doubt he will have new fans if he roam free to do what he does best, singing and acting. Plus Su’s and Chun’s success in the past 3 yrs….the sky will be their limit.
Knowing how evil these 2 giants are, they will NOT sit still and let this happened. Given the opportunities, JYJ can possibly be as fierce as the other big names there. Me being bitter as a loyal fans of these fine young men, can only wait till that time will finally comes.
And when it does, who knows when, I know I’ll shed tears…tears of joy. Japan, let this be reality, I have more faith in you than I have with SK. Peace!
Can someone explain to me what this statement means: “The Dokdo dispute has contributed significantly to the decline of hallyu.”
I am totally confused as to why the hallyu wave has declined in Japan. Also, I know this might sound stupid but can someone tell me their understanding of what the hallyu wave is? I have always wondered if I truly understand what it is meant by the hallyu wave. When did this wave start? This wave is something that is only called that in Korea correct? Why use the word hallyu? Like I said I know my questions might sound stupid but I want to make sure I have a good understanding. So can someone please answer these questions.
@flower ~ hello, hope this link bring more info for you.

@flower
See my comment to retrokim above. 🙂
The “Hallyu Wave” is a term for the so-called “successful” mass exportation of Korean culture around the world but particularly in other parts of Asia. It deals mostly with Korean dramas and K-pop but can relate to other parts of Korean culture as well. The idea is that Korea is becoming a leader in the entertainment and arts field which also helps bring economic prosperity.
Japan is the biggest target because it has one of the world’s biggest musical industries.
For example, AKB48 (a Japanese girl group) is one of the highest income earning “musical” acts in the world.
China is set to become a new target because of its’ massive and fast growing economy but for the moment Japan is where the money is at.
Anyways many people (like lilibaiyu) speculate that this Hallyu takeover is an over-hyped sham.
The Dokdo Islands are a bunch of rocks (seriously…not even really an island) called “Takeshima” in Japan and the big problem is that both countries claim that territory as theirs hence there are outbreaks of ethnic and political tension.
So….Korean idol groups who feel pressure to take the side of their government have stopped promoting in Japan and have gone back to South Korea or to mainland China to try their luck until this incident blows over.
I would guess that this Hallyu Wave started sometime around 2000-2004. Big gap but many other factors count in this besides DBSK. I love the group but I’m not going to exaggerate on their behalf. Yes the Hallyu Wave is acknowledged in Korea but I think the Japanese also have a word for it.
@aurora, lilibaiyu, retrokim thank you guys for your reply and the information!!!!! All of it helped clarify things for me more!!
Honestly speaking, the whole JP entertainment environment has drastically changed ,
(due to political tension as mentioned above. )
Most Korea entertainment owners already admitted this is the reality .
Clearly all Korea entertainment agencies already paved the best path for their artists.
Cjes also worked closely with sina Beijing & other China partners.
Thus I don’t think JYJ should bear any moral burden to change the Japan market environment , whatever it is.
** Homin just finished a concert on 19-1, one of them sang a song in accurate Putonghua which
greatly surprised the fans. As active as they have been in Japan for 2 years, also admitted the
future market NOT limited to JP anymore. Greater China is for them to penetrate before JP door totally closed.
JYJ top mission is to practice Putonghua , & stick close with the enhanced Sino – Korea entertainment joint projects this year. Suju M already seized the chance to sing an OST for a China movie, totally in
Putonghua. ( plus a recent release song also pure Putonghua) They really spent tough time to master
the speaking skill. The market can be much larger now.
JYJ , weigh wisely this time. Sometimes, average ppl will be more successful, just because they ride on the correct horse. Surely, whatever JYJ choose shall be blessed & respected. They are adults now.
( just my opinion)
This is the big problem. Why should JYJ give up on Japan? We would be major hypocrites if we acted like China was the solution because it is not. China also has plenty of territorial disputes with South Korea and Japan. The only reason these management companies are heading towards China is because both China and S. Korea are having diplomatic issues with Japan. The anti-Japanese feeling in China is far stronger than the anti-Korean sentiment but enough for Korean companies to try this “takeover” nonsense in China? Doubt it.
Problems will arise and what seems like the easy solution will become its own problem in due time. And I’m not sure if I’m picking the tone correctly but it seems like this decision is driven by money, money and more money. JYJ (Junsu in particular) have admitted that they felt resentful when they were sent by SME to go promote in Japan. It took years of sacrifice and adapting a whole new culture for them to become as truly loved as they are now. You think that because Homin memorized the correct pronunciation for a Putonghua song that they have it made in China? The only SME group that has invested serious time in China has been SuJu. Not TVXQ or SNSD or even f(x) just because they have Victoria.
You make it sound like it is as easing as changing your mind. It takes lots of time. They have to learn the language (memorizing a few songs isn’t the same) and they’ll have to live there or continue their crazy 2 flights in a day schedule from China to S.Korea and back again. The Japanese fans and supporters who have stood by JYJ don’t deserve to be dropped down because of some ignorant racists in their country. Whether people like it or not Japan was a big deal in their lives. By no means am I saying that time shouldn’t be invested in China but acting like Japan was nothing but a bank stop is pretty disgusting and self-serving behavior. Some groups are there only to make money but for JYJ (and yes, Homin too) this country was a second home.
was hangeng part of SUJU-M? one of the reasons SM didn’t hound him like they have JYJ was because they need the chinese market, right?
thankfully CJES is not SM and JYJ is JYJ. i doubt they will treat china like japan 2.0. unless the island fiasco escalates and they have virtually no other choice…
@retrokim ~ hello. I don’t think or mean JYJ should give up JP market. But 80:20 ratio must apply.
All the PR warm up have been extending for Jaejoong , Yoochun, ( exclusive sina Beijing interview & Fans meeting in China), for Junsu, mostly written press promotion. All these are just talking . Not yet
really walk in the market and get work started. You can see Yoochun so earnest to start working in China. Especially he is more in acting now. Do you think he got a chance to film in Japan in the nearest future ? Just ponder. But, Korea acting field already signed contract with China. More & more filming
joint projects is upcoming. China guarantee at least 5000 screens for Korea. The successful movie
人再囧途之泰囧Lost In Thailand (2012) , how much is its earning at the moment ? Just check it out & that is the reason Jae & Yoochun so eager to begin with.
And , the dispute between China & Korea is not that severe. China already cancel all organizational
interaction package with JP , eg travel incentive of Amway China, some 25000 staff & their family
will travel to Korea for long vacation incentive. And this is only a small biz , huge is upcoming.
( pls watch closely with recent US-JP-China-Russia-Korea vigorous tug of wars about dispute island
recently. “Big” things going to happen)
Learning new language at different life stages with different needs is just ordinary thing.
So many expatriates from French , German , Britain, US can speak fluent Mandarin now ,
before that they also spent lots of time learning Japanese . Market changes, everything change,
nothing more , nothing less.
Suju , JKS also done the same for languages things, and JKS earns HUGE from China is solid proof.
Suju already very busy promoting all around in China like great musician, ( piano, violin etc…)
JKS using 80:20 rule as well. That is why he is no#1 in earning.
** even Kim Tae Hee lost many CF chances in JP. But Korea artists got so many CF in China.
That is even more remunerative. JKS is so busy & active with China CF , he is huge success.
* just a simple 30 mins commercial event his income is US$130,000 min.
Focus on acting, dun’t get distracted. Know the core & future market, is the wise thing for any
idols going to the army within 3 years of time, or even shorter.
Meanwhile, I don’t mean JYJ should stay away from JP Fans. Don’t get me wrong.
JYJ & cjes need to think more on how to stay in touch with JP fans . That is cjes job.
My point is , DO read a lot what global elite biz ppl & corps are doing , their opinion & strategy are not wishful thinking . You gain rather than lose.
** if you travel to Dailin, you will discover how huge number of JP biz have been invested there.
and they express no hope going back to JP.
( just my opinion)
Hello,
Just jumping into this discussion 🙂
I think JYJ is doing just fine at the moment don’t you think?
I know that China is a HUGE market to tap into.
But even now without promotions and other media coverage JYJ is still making an impact in China.
Look at JS he is #1 for a few things in China and that is a great feat considering he didn’t promote heavily.
And via the internet JJ is making waves.
YC is sort after for his dramas.
I think what they are doing now and taking things slow and steady will build a strong foundation for them in the future.
I like how they are sticking to their roots and that people are still yearning and interested in them without forcing them to change.
I think fans appreciate their efforts even with all the unfair treatment they are getting. And more and more independent media/journalists are becoming more sympathetic towards them and promoting them.
if jyj get to promote freely in japan everyone else in the hallyu wave~ should just go home lol
This…is TRue! Lol
no group can survive like JYJ. JYJ deserve the best powerful artist in Korea.
NO TV , NO RADIO, NO VARIETY SHOW, LACK OF PROMOTION.
But still the tops. True talent.
i cant imagine if they comeback in Japan , maybe i can see JYJ Tokyo dome concert again? 😀 awww i will so happy. Lets show ur power JYJ.!!
Ladies… We are doing a tweet campaign for JYJ. here is the post link http://t.co/rve4prYw . It should go to @MnetGlobal @MnetKR @KBSWorldTV @KBSMusicBank @SBSNOW @SBS_inkigayo @leesanghoC @showchampion1 @withMBC @MBCMusicCore @SBSKPOPSTAR. To let our young men perform on SKTV. courtesty of Standup4JYJ.
I don’t care about this so-called ‘Hallyu’ crap; and I think the also-rans are latching onto JYJ to further their greedy aims. I just want JYJ to be able to perform for the fans that want them in whatever country that may be!!!
Soooo…. they shun JYJ like lepers back in Korea and expect to ride on their coattails once again now that they have won their case against Avex and are expected to make a huge splash in Japan. Those behind the so-called hallyu wave suddenly need JYJ to redeem their sagging sales and public images in JP?? I say LEAVE JYJ ALONE. They are sooooo beyond hallyu and kpop now.
@Jan
” I say LEAVE JYJ ALONE. They are sooooo beyond hallyu and kpop now.”
Yep, I say the same thing. Just leave them alone unless you want to claim them as Korea’s national treasure, which they most certainly are. If SK wants to honor them as artists and to allow them to promote freely, then I say all hard feelings will be forgotten. Otherwise, if nothing is to change, I say “S Korea – just let them go. Let them come to any one of a number of welcoming nations. WE all want them and we will take good care of them.”
Please just give JYJ some rest or freedom without any responsibilities from others.
I would like to say “leave them alone for a while”…..
It would be nice if they perform again in Japan even though I’m not living there but i will be happy for Japanese fans to be able watch the boys again … Congratulation jyj
I agree some facts said by fans here really reflect how hallyu wave + the effects being now..indeed we’re getting weird w/ the over-exposed commercials..
about JYJ, I think one of their best is the genuity thus I always get feeling that they show the love + being loved by JP fans far away of bias or politics or only targeting biz things.. through these years of hardship, they show us determination & commitment besides of continuing passion with the less fuss of unkind situations happened.. they’re learning what they’re going to and I just believe in whatever steps they’re taking ^ they deserve walking their journey w/ things they choose the most by their ownselves ^ ^
they’re truly artist/musician hence in wherever countries they’re going, those complicated matters shouldn’t bother the most rite? 😀
