On the 22th, Japan’s ‘Hanryu 10th Anniversary’ Executive Committee revealed to the public their intermediate results for ‘TOP 100 Popular Korean Dramas’.
Park Yuchun and Han Jimin’s ‘Rooptop Prince’ is currently at 3rd place. It was just broadcasted last year in Japan and China yet it is in 3rd place out of the 100 productions, which could even be said to be quite impressive. This is also proof of Park Yuchun’s local popularity in Japan. The voting deadline is until September 30th. The final results will be published on October 19th.

Yeah, OK, that makes sense. Saw them both, I loved “You’re Beautiful” – I own it and I’ve seen it a bunch of times now. “Winter Sonata” was the kind of melodrama that is my least favorite in the K-drama genre and frankly, BYJ’s hair was a complete and
unfortunate distraction the whole way through… Still, he’s like a god over there so it doesn’t surprise me in the least that he’s number one. I would have voted for “The Legend” as the definitive BYJ but that’s just me.

My guess is Winter Sonata still holds a strong place in the hearts and minds of the Japanese fans who love Kdramas. The image of BYJ looks similar to the way he looked when he appeared in Dream High. This would be just about the time he got over that serious illness he had after The Legend. Was “You’re Beautiful” a big hit in Japan. I got to it after it appeared on Korean TV. Remember, this is for the dramas I believe, not necessarily the actors per se.
With respect to “You’re Beautiful”: seems to have been very popular in Japan, even made a Japanese version of it, which was also well received, but I think the Korean version is better.
The only Japanese dramas that I’ve seen were the one that Jaejoong did, and I got a chance to see a fuzzy version of the mobile drama Yoochun did. But somehow, I didn’t see Marry Me, Mary being bigger than You’re Beautiful. Not sure how this will turn out. But Winter Sonata celebrated its 10th anniversary, and there was a big to do for this, so it may still be very fresh in the minds of the Japanese fans.
