Agree, let’s all remember this is the same 15 year old poor kid who braved to come to Seoul to fulfill his dream. I have a strong faith and let’s all pray that he’ll complete his training with flying colors. Let’s have an idea what he’ll be doing for the next 5 weeks.
Blessing Jae…..😭😭😭!
Jaejoong T.T

woooah he still look soooo handsome and strong without make up and short army hair, you can even spot him among others easily humphhh missing him already
Our JJ looks good. I am not his mother but I feel so proud. My baby is in the military and serving his country well.
he’s soooo stand oout
he is a handsome soldier jae fighting. we’re going to wait for your return. 2016
He even looks younger than some of these teenagers!
Il est magnifique! JJ beaucoup de courage et reviens nous en bonne santé !
he would look good even with a shiny bold head ❤💋
but I’m just …..I thought I would handle it but ….. T__________T
There there
still handsome as always
Did he matured overnight? I hope he will be okay..
I think he kida looks insecure, or is it just me…
Anyway, it’s interesing too to see how this looks like…
I thought so too. He looks a little scared.
me too he look tense…
They all look kinda scared. The kid in the first pic, who is waving to his family looks like he is trying so hard to be brave. Jae too, like he is biting his lip and keeping his head up.
Maybe It’s contagious and I can try to be brave too?
I think he looks scared, mad or sad to me. Also, looks like he notices that someone is taking his picture. It seems like with the look on his face It bothers him that they are taking his picture. I am pretty sure based on his wish to enlist privately. He would prefer this moment to be private. But that is just my thinking.
yup, I think so too…
Ahhh, now that you’ve said it… yes, a little bit, but not as much as Jae… but I also thought maybehe felt uncomfortable being filmed, being payed so much attention to….
But what it the third pic? Is he annoyed?
OMG!!! he’s so handsome with that haircut!!! love him even more (didn’t know it was possible!) XD ❤
Omo, look at those people staring at him subtly.
Enlist well, Jaejoong. We can’t wait for you to return. I hope we have more vids of him in the military.
oh my very manly ! no make up, no hair dyed, no fancy clothes…just him…PLAIN AND SIMPLE JAE JONG!!!!! WE WILL MISS YOU….
I’m worried 😦
It will be ok. We just have to keep our heads up like Jae. We can be brave fans right? I’m gonna try.
This is too surreal.
I don’t know what he was worried about. He looks amazing with short hair! He looks manly and edgy!
Also I didn’t really sense insecurity from him tbh. To me it looks like he’s pissed that people are taking pictures of him. He’s giving a serious stink eye to the person taking the pictures lol. I think he really just doesn’t want any attention on himself.
God I’m soooooo curious what the other soldiers reaction to Jae are/were like. Like when they were eating or getting ready to sleep were they fanboying and asking him questions or did they not dare speak to him. Let’s be honest Jae can look cold and scary when he wants to be instead of showing his usual warm personality. Maybe he will want to look tough so other soldiers don’t think of him as some wimpy idol and bully him. If he puts his serious face on like in the pics above I can imagine some soldiers not dare go near him…
Sigh, I wish camera’s followed him like “Real Man” so we could see how he is doing!
I don’t think anybody would be fanboying over him. Most of them probably won’t even know who he is. I know that for us he is the center of the universe but believe it or not, not many people know about them in Korea. I mean the general public. My friend goes to university in Seoul and she couldn’t find a single person in the whole dorm who could go with her a a JYJ concert because nobody knew who they were… And these are not even girls but boys so even more out of their usual fan territory.
Well, there were literally hundreds of girls waiting outside so I think everyone was at least aware a celebrity was enlisting with them. These pictures above were taken by relatives of some of the guys that enlisted and most were tagged with #YoungwoongJaejoong. Clearly they were aware of who he was..^^ you can see some of the soldiers staring at Jae in the pics as well. I’m sure the rumors spread between the soldiers that Youngwoong Jaejoong has enlisted with them…
JYJ might not be known (cuz they literally could never promote themselves) but a lot of people have at least heard about DongBangShinKi and it’s members names. They are considered a legendary idol group in Korea. I wouldn’t exactly call them unknown to the general public… They are probably still more known than most idols these days.
It’s like never having heard of the Spice Girls. You may not know the members specifically by face but you would have at least heard of the name Spice Girls or Sporty Spice, Baby Spice etc, or heard their song Wannabe..
It’s just that teens/twenties these days wouldn’t care as much about DBSK/JYJ cuz there are new boygroups like Exo.. Maybe your friend just encountered tweens like that haha
And I didn’t mean fanboy as in like we do lol.. but I mean some soldiers will probably be curious. Like ask him about girlgroups or about the entertainment business or if he dated a celebrity and things like that…
I’m curious if Jae is gonna be welcoming and warm to his fellow soldiers or if he’s going down the ‘I’m a tough dude don’t come near me’ route lol. Judging from the pictures above he wanted to look tough! hahaha ^^
I didn’t know about the fans waiting outside, I thought they respected his wishes to enter quietly and I expected a lot more pictures if there was a mob out there. XD But that would really make the newbies realise there’s somebody there they should recognise. XD But on these photos I don’t know what you see because it doesn’t matter how many times I check, nobody is even looking at him. There are a few heads turned but they are looking at the camera not Jaejoong and you forget most men enlist when they are around 20 yrs old so these are the same “teens” you are talking about. And we can go on about the “probably”-s and ” must have”-s here, outside of Korea but my friend lives there and I believe her when she says they are practically non-existent for the general public. They are not on TV, you can’t hear them on radio, they don’t play their songs in the clubs… Only their fans know who they are. It’s unbelievable and it makes me sad, frustrated and mad at the same time but that unfortunately doesn’t change the fact that we have like 5 photos taken by at least 200 enlisting guys’ families…
But that said, I’m sure they will go over the usual “where did you come from-what do you do” rounds in the first few days so they will definitely learn about JYJ now, even those who don’t have an older sister who knows about DBSK. XD Jaejoong is warm and friendly to those who deserve his trust and more than used to working as part of a group and following orders so I’m not worried about him. I’m sure he will make great friendships in these 2 years. And you are right, they *will* ask him about everything. XD It’s not every day you sleep in the same bunk bed with a celebrity. XD
I just read all your replies and I’m starting to wonder if you are trolling? Lol.. You stated “Unfortunately when I said ‘nobody’ I meant it”. In English this means you pretty much called JYJ and its members ‘nobodies’ in Korea.
I agree (as I have said the 1st time I replied to you) that JYJ might not have public popularity but the members individually are definitely known celebrities in Korea. I wouldn’t go as far as calling them complete nobodies. The chances that people will know the names Youngwoong Jaejoong, Xia Junsu, Micky Yoochun are higher than even most popular idol group members these days.
DBSK between 2004-2009 was literally everywhere in Korea. Back then there weren’t as many idol groups and DBSK was the one with the largest fanbase. They were pretty much on every variety show on tv and won many awards at major music awards shows. Most people will at least know their song ‘Hug’. It’s a classic!
Also just because a newer generation comes along doesn’t mean they will be completely forgotten. My little sister was born after Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Spice Girls were popular yet she still has heard of them because they were legends in pop… Yes they don’t have popularity anymore just like TVXQ/JYJ doesn’t have Exo’s popularity these days but they are still known from the times they were popular!
Your comparison to an underground band also makes no sense. JYJ is more Backstreet Boys (just under a different group name) than some underground band that never achieved any succes.
Even to this day on every list where people talk about ‘the best idol voice’: Junsu’s name will be there.
On lists about ‘the best idol group’ people will always say things like: DBSK are the legends and BigBang the kings.
DBSK will always be a level up over other new idols. They were pioneers. The frontrunners of the second generation idols followed by SuJu, BigBang and SNSD etc.
Even now new idol groups always mention DBSK as their sunbaes they look up to. Everyone still wants to achieve the status they had and still have!
Believe me that when Jae enlisted most people knew who he was. If you say “He’s from JYJ” people won’t know but if you say “He’s Youngwoong Jaejoong. He was in DBSK” it will make people go ‘Oh yeah’. Even if they don’t know him by face they will have at least heard of him. And yes even some of the younger generations (they would just care less). Plus it’s not like DBSK was popular 20 years ago.. It’s only been 6 years since they were at their prime. The boys enlisting with Jae are mostly in their early twenties. I’m pretty sure they would remember a group that was popular in their (early) teens.
Also despite not being popular JYJ still has a huge fanbase because the members are known household names with their own steady fanbases. Many idols that are popular now wouldn’t be able to sell out the arena’s that JYJ does. Despite no promo’s they still sell really good as well.
Also as Moony205 said do you think they would cast random idols that are nobodies as leads in their drama’s? Only idols with large name value(that have large fanbases) or immens talents (like Siwan, Lee Joon) get to play lead roles. Or you need a large company like SM, YG behind you… JYJ members clearly got cast in the beginning for their name value because they weren’t as good at acting as they are now and they didn’t have the support of a large company but had one against them!
Lastly Koreans in general are nostalgic people. ‘Infinity Challenge’ had the ‘Totoga’ episode recently where they invited the first generation idols like Turbo, SES and Jinusean and Koreans went crazy over it! They really cherish older groups like G.O.D. and HOT as well because it makes them sentimental about the past. Even the younger generation knows the names of these older groups. DBSK was the frontrunner of the 2nd generation and is also a household name like that. The members individually are mostly known by name as well.
Just because your one friend told you some stuff does’t mean it’s the reality 😉 😉 :d
(Okey this was a loooooong ass rant, I’m gonna stop now lol)
Lizzy is just funny. I met on the euroweek woman from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietman (their Japaneese friends couldn’t come and meet us) and they knew, who are JYJ memebrs. One of them is even their fan (and 2NE1) and she said, that they’re known in Indonesia and the one from Vietman confirmed, that they are known in Vietnam too, but she is not interested in kpop. So they aren’t known in Korea at all? That’s ridiculous. Did you at least see JYJ’s audience or Park Yoochun’s while getting award? Even in Japan they’re well known. Drama actors are nobodies? JYJ are nobody? A lot of older people doesn’t even know, who is DO or from EXO or Yoona from SNSD (I’m not kinding), but know, who is “Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun or Kim junsu”. Let’s see how your young idols are known in general public. The ones from these countries said, that the members from currently popular in Korea gropus such like BTS, Miss A. Red Velvet, Apink, Aoa, B141 (ot something like that) etc, aren’t known at all. However I Like Miss A and I’m sad about that, but the girl from Indonesia didn’t know them or for example Apink. I AGREE WITH FLEUR. Ah, and one more thing. Woman are around 23, 26, 27, 28. 😉
groups*
To Lizzy. And Jaejoong doesn’t look now like an Idol, drama actor or singer (stage look), but like handome, young and mature man. So they could not recognise him at first. I saw a lot of actors or singers after work in my country, but I wasn’t looking at them while taking photos by someone. I just respect their privacy. It’s such an important event to every young man in Korea, so why should they searching for idols?
I do not think JYJ are extremely popular, by any means, to the general public. But the “nobody” status you are seemingly trying to apply also seems inaccurate and overblown due to your friends experiences.
Unfortunately when I said “nobody” I meant it. We talk about an 8 story building full of young people all at the proper age for clubing and partying and nobody was interested to go with her. Most of them simply didn’t know who they are, some of them was like “hmm sounds familiar… Oh yes, Youngwoong Jaejoong from DBSK right?” but didn’t know anything about JYJ… That’s the sad reality. So I’m not trying to apply anything, I know what I know and it’s up to you if you believe it or not. I’m not trying to convince anybody. Fleur in her previous comment said it’s like you never heard of Spice Girls. No, it’s not like that. They were a worldwide phenomenon and as my brother said once they were dripping even from the faucet. So yeah, it would be hard not to know them. But would you know about any underground American band who doesn’t appeare on TV or you don’t hear their brand new song on radio every morning on your way to work? I don’t think so. And they all have their dedicated fans, have their concerts, albums. I love our boys dearly and I wish it would change after they leave the army. Despite the popular opinion of them not needing the TV and everything… Unfortunately on the long run yes they do.
Your statements discount an entire generation of idol fans who are now 25++. Those individuals are still alive, have buying power, and will more than likely know the members of JYJ. General public doesn’t just equate to the 18-23 college crowd.
I am aware of the reality that JYJ (as a group) is not popular with the general public and that their core audience is their fanbase. I just don’t agree with the extent to which you pushed your argument. I do not think your definition of nobody equates to mine, so in the end, I think we will have to agree to disagree.
For me it’s like comparing N*sync/Backstreet Boys to One direction now. General public isn’t really interested in N*sync anymore(aside from Justin), but the names of the members can still be recalled, and their names will still get them air time on tv, the occasional record deal, and can still make for good tabloid fodder. They are no longer popular, but they are not quite to nobody status either.
I don’t think Yoochun or Jaejoong would be casted in any drama as leads if they were legitimate nobodies. Production companies and the tv stations bank on their hallyu power and public recognition to draw in viewers domestically and to fuel overseas sales.
But again, we can agree to disagree.
*I also think that most fans acknowledge that JYJ are being severely disadvantaged with their ban from public broadcast stations. It has a huge effect on their growing power, but it is not something fans can fix, and despite the lack of strong media presence they have managed to maintain a significant amount of their large fanbase over 5 years.
LOL You are saying the same thing that I do, just with different words. You say maybe they are not popular with the general public but there are the 25+ fans who have buying power and still know them. And what did I say? The general public doesn’t know them, only their fans who really love them. Same thing. And I still don’t understand your point about that “nobody” thing. When did I say they are nobodies? *confused* I must have missed something if you are trying to explain it to me through that Nsync-BSB-One Direction example… So I don’t understand. I appretiate that you try to protect them, I just don’t understand against who. Me? I didn’t say a word against them, just saying what my friend is telling me for the last five years since she is in Seoul. Why is it so hard to believe? She is there, you are not. She told me many more things about the fandom in Korea, things we don’t know here. I’m just as upset about this whole “not being recognised” thing as you are, I love them just as much as you do so I don’t know where is the disagreement? In me saying something I have proof of and you trying to be the knight in shining armor – I’m saying it again: unnecessarily – against me based on a hypotesis you made?
@Fleur I agree with you that he does look amazing with short hair!! He looks manly and edgy!!! I too said I thought he was looking mad that people were taking pictures of him. Yes he is giving them a serious look like you better stop taking my picture or else, LOL!!!! He just wants to enlist and serve his time in private.
Meh…..
“Public recognition” doesn’t really mean anything in South Korea. It is a strong fandom that matters, because they have buying and investment power.
For example, Sistar has huge public recognition in South Korea from what I can tell, but they even struggle to fill up a concert hall nor do they have strong album or digital sales for that matter.
On the other hand Busker Busker had (since they broke up) huge public recognition but I doubt if you asked the average citizen they would know all of the members names.
DBSK in their ‘legendary’ faze or whatever didn’t even have strong public recognition as in their songs never charted well digitally ever. So, they didn’t lose a lot. I mean I guess yeah their sales decreased a bit, but they still sell a huge amount compared to other “publicly recognized” singers.
Right now Exo is very publicly recognized, mostly because of their insane hormonal fans, but I doubt the average citizen would know even three members names.
I guess Bigbang is the epitome of what most idol groups aim for – they have strong public recognition + strong digital sales + strong physical sales + a strong fandom who won’t ditch them at any random scandal.
When I think of all the groups that have ‘public recognition’ right now I think how many of these group idol singers if they went solo would sell a huge amount still and be equally as publicly recognized? I doubt any of these ‘publicly recognized’ singers nowadays would be able to pull it off (e.g. Taeyeon, Yoona, Suzy, D.O., etc).
Korea cares more about the ‘brand name’ of the group in total so rarely when these individuals break out of their groups and release something do they do well.
Few who have developed a strong image for solo work to thrive though – for example, Gdragon, IU, etc.
One must remember that the average Korean citizen has no time for this kind of stuff – all they do is study all day, eat, and sleep. Their whole life is revolved around specs and getting good grades to get a good job therefore they have no interest in singers or idol groups. If something becomes the ‘trend’ (e.g. a song or a group) they will listen to that song 1. because it is literally playing on the radio everywhere and 2. because they don’t want to be the awkward person out who does not know the ‘trends’. Otherwise, they don’t contribute to sales or concert attendees or anything.
tldr to sum it up public recognition means nothing. They don’t put food or money on an idols table – they don’t contribute a lot besides adding to name value and maybe a few additional fans – which by the way one can do while acting too. Heck, acting is probably superior to getting ones name out there than singing is any day. Look at Lee Joon and Siwon, they are HUGE in the acting industry, but those fans of theirs did not transfer to buying their group album work.
If one of the JYJ members decided to walk down a road they would have a huge throng of people following them (more than half of those would be people who are just curious) – so yeah although the average person doesn’t know them they still do hold immense weight in Korea and the industry. Jaejoong even felt depressed once for walking into a convenience store and creating too much havoc for his manager ….. and this was at night time.
JYJ has been doing more solo work than group work anyways so I don’t get why your friend asked them about ‘JYJ’. The entity ‘JYJ’ does not exist except in fans hearts because heck they rarely promote, they are rarely seen together etc. AND this had NOTHING to do with being on broadcast or not. Even if they could go on TV or radio, if they rarely promote as JYJ it wouldn’t matter lol. If instead, Yoochun was mentioned or even a name of one of the dramas he acted in there would be more conversation. (I am not sure if the general public cares about ‘music charts’ either – but I am proud that Jaejoong ranked in third place on the album charts behind HUGE publicly known people).
Anyways sorry for my rant.
I totally agree with you Canadian. Missing Jae Joong already. I am so worried for him. I read bullying is a major issue in the Korean army and conditions are very poor at the training camps. I wonder if it will be ok to donate some basic supplies to the training camp Jae Joong is at. The pic of him hugging the tissues makes me sad for him.
Yes I heard about that too. I hope it doesn’t happen to him 😦
But remember Jaejoong is a really tough person!
At a very young age he came to Seoul and worked casual jobs + lived a hard life to support himself.
And I doubt any bullying can be more extreme than an entire industry turning against you and saying bad things about you after the lawsuit. That was extreme bullying – including A LOT of his friends in the industry abandoning him.
I doubt that people in the army would bully a celebrity too much in the army because if word got out from one of these celebrities the armies image would be further destroyed. Maybe some would say some harsh words though, but JJ has far surpassed that level to care emotionally (according to my belief.)
Also Jaejoong is a social butterfly. So even if it is hard for him initially he will find a way to fit in and thrive 😀
Lets hope and pray for the best 😀
Thanks for this comment. I get what you are saying.
Even with a crew cut n no make up he shine more than anyone else.
Go do your duty and come back stronger. In the meantime I will try to come closer to my own goals. We will wait for you. Come back safely.
Worried, Jaejoong looks so tense and not at ease although fatally handsome.
from the video I posted above, this is probably what JJ is doing now and the next day
Aww~ JJ!!
He looks different. So fierce. Fighting, sweetie~!
Thanks for this video @Kris! I won’t have to imagine all kinds of worrisome things abt what Jae might be going thru on a daily basis. I will watch this vid once a week for the next five weeks 🙂 I hope one of his sisters will post up a pic of him in uni, if allowed! Kim Jaejoong Hwaiting!!!
You’re welcome. Maybe I’ll watch this video every now and then and imagine what’s JJ doing.
I just watched it and it helps to know what Jae is doing.
Omg it looks kinda like a movie filming and all the ppl behind him are extras
