I have to agree here. Wow. The vox are undeniably stronger. Even before the statutorily imposed healthy lifestyle, the latest disc showcased a marked improvement. The clips are just as impressive given the absence of world class production and editing. And really, he’s only just begun. Clearly, his second act could be even more memorable. Indeed, looking forward to listening.
As for who sang with whom, I guess to each his own. I do understand that a group can be the sound track of your life. You carry a special place for them in your heart and remain loyal through thick and thin. Having just discovered JYJ and the genre, I am enjoying catching up on the dvd’s (Return and Ichigo). The messy squishy bumpy history of JYJ, may be their perfect storm. If the Beatles had not broken up, we would not have “Imagine”.
Carole, totally agree with all you say here. And welcome to the world of JYJ. Each of our members have so much to offer in talents and personality and generosity to their fans. If you have not checked out Jae’s performances during the 55th Ground Forces gathering in October…you really must do so. Vocals again without equal. CJeS also did a video production of that which was wonderful. Check them out on YouTube. If it weren’t so late I would find them for you. Sleepy in Georgia. 😴

Jaejoongie has a very forgiving heart, more than is good for him, but in this case this singing together means nothing. When you are in the army you do what the superiors tell you to do or not to do. You have no choice but to do as ordered.
May be the army are being diplomatic and want to avoid the backlash Jae got last time when he was the main star and attraction of the previous activities. So they are giving a chance to all and let the public decide for themselves who is the best of all. For us it’s not hard to decide, is it? I do not even need to listen to the others coz I already know.

It was on twitter after the split. Her and a few of the SJ members called Junsu, and indirectly JJ and YC, ungrateful and traitorous…etc. It was pretty ugly.
@Jo Barr it’s in 2011, not only BoA but also her mother went to show and talked badly about JYJ.

The only one who was close and trusted to JYJ were JYJ, the only one who saved JYJ is court, FTC and the Lawyers who were following the lawsuit. they exposed SM’s slaves contract to public which SM was trying to hide with their media play. at the end JYJ were right and SM was found guilty.
at the end of the lawsuit Jaejoong said there were many hard times but the worst, was people we thought they were out friends were the first to backstab us…this sentence didn’t come out of blue.
Now undoubtedly they were pointedly TOLD to do these things by their managers at SM, but to thereafter categorize them as “friends” is not realistic. JYJ received at best the cold shoulder from all SM signees after the split. At worst… the slander.
Haven’t we known Jaejoong till now? He had even talked to his ex-bandmate and his father who had done more gross stuffs to JYJ how much more to SuJu guys,

Jae always goods great…..but to me he looked a bit tired. Perhaps the camera in the first photos caught him at a odd moment. And like Anna Liza he had a determined look or was it a look of something else? Or a glad it’s over and I can go rest look.
BTW…. will be out of pocket for the next two weeks…will try to keep up with all that is happening in JYJville….everyone be happy and healthy till I can comment again😉
P.S. Did it look like Jae gave a quick glance at the guy videoing him? And perhaps I can comment tomorrow….but will be gone on the 6th for sure🛫🛫🛫. Will miss all of you!

OMG!!! I have goosebumps and think I am about to hyperventilate!!!!!! Jaejoong sounds INCREDIBLE..I seriously cannot breath properly right now as my heart is pumping with too much adrenaline!!! I have butterflys and am overwhelmed…just to see him live is awesome BUT to hear that MAGNIFICENT VOICE!!!! WOW, what an enormous treat. THANK YOU SOOOOO much for posting this…I have to go catch my breath and watch that very short video at the end just to see Jaejoong-ah close up for a litereal tenth of a second….omg…It has been too long since we have seen or heard from him….thank you, thank you, thank you 🙂

I wish I could hear the whole song but from whatever bits I heard of Family Portrait, Jaejoong voice does seem to have changed somewhat, especially in the lower register. I remember once he was being praised for his wide range rainbow voice but because JJ always puts others ahead of himself while belittling his own achievements, he responded that he knows his voice is a bit thin at times. I am not sure what is the opposite of “thin voice” but what I hear from the above snippets is a rich, deep voice, voice that resonated and reverberated across the field. And this resonant timbre completes the tenor’s voice. In other words, he has developed his voice as a tenor to the highest expectations. And we know Jaejoong, he will use whichever of those rainbow voices pleases him that best fits the occasion and the mood. I wish I could hear the whole rendition of the song.
I think that “thin voice” made him the lead singer of TVXQ5, if he’d used his thick and loud voice, their harmony would be a mess. But in Love You More, he used both his thin and thick voice that some people think it’s sung by a group.
He said he knows his voice is a bit thin at times, it’s not on purpose so no it’s not the voice range of Jaejoong in DBSK5, it’s a weakness at certain parts that he himself imagines haha
I think that was during the early stage of DBSK5 when they said that Jaejoong was just a nice voice when they started but he didn’t exactly know how to use it. He was the one with the most potential with that gorgeous voice but he didn’t know how to use yet – over time he’s learned and the rest is history 🙂
I’ve definitely noticed that Jaejoong pulls out different voices for different venues. Him singing in Tohoshinki vs. Dongbangshinki vs. JYJ vs. as a solo all have differences. Especially, when we compare Tohoshinki versus Dongbangshinki. Jaejoong changed his vocal tone, and breathing quality to assimilate to Japanese tastes. I agree that the flexibility of his voice allowed him to be lead singer. He’s good at adjusting to meld harmonies together. I think it’s even quite hard for people who analyze to pin down his most natural tone. I personally think his natural voice is huskier and deeper than some people imagine, but because he is known for a breathy/airy quality, I’ve seen many say his natural voice is quite high and light. For me, the changes in his vocal stylings make him an interesting artist to watch. I feel he is experimental, but still maintains signature qualities that make his voice memorable. This performance was like hearing a new song for me because even in this short time span he has slightly changed the vocal performance of this song.

There is an expression “Love at first sight”. For me it was “Love at first listen”.I didn’t know what DBSQ5 or who Jaejoong was or what Kpop was. Somebody had got a copy of DBSQ’s Hug and it was the English version. As you might remember, in those days their English wasn’t quite up to scratch so for her it was like a joke, “Have you heard Koreans sing?” which I hadn’t. In fact, I knew nothing much about Korea. But then as I listened, suddenly a voice detached itself from the others and went straight into my heart and has never left it since then. I loved that voice, it spoke to me, it was as if I had waited to hear that voice and lock it within myself. I never thought of that voice as thin or anything. To me that was the most beautiful voice that there could be.
Jaejoong was the lead singer of DBSQ not because his voice was thin but because he could control and modulate it to blend and harmonize with the others and then suddenly soar above all of them and lead them as they fell in step with him. In addition, he could control and adjust his voice to suit the occasion, the mood andcontent of the song: sorrowful or happy, hopeful or in despair. He created the tone and the atmosphere. That’s why he would normally start off the songs but if he didn’t, that meant the song had not really started till he gave it its colour with his rainbow voice.
On the other hand, while we cannot say that Jaejoong lacks ambition because if he did, then he wouldn’t have reached where he now is, but JJ is not a domineering type. He always gives credit to those working with him, starting from staff to his group members. He works hard in the background but does not draw attention to himself. If he said about two years ago that his voice is a bit thin, it’s because he is his own harshest critic and because he wanted to draw attention away from himself and started talking about Junsu and how JS has that fabulous voice while Yu choon is a genius and has the best sense of humour and can make you laugh without any effort.
In his last rendition of Family Portrait Jaejoong used the right resonant timbre that soared above the noise of the crowd and carried across the field and over the mountains. That’s where Jaejoong’s genius is – to know which one of his multiplicity of voices to use for what kind of song and on what occasion. And what’s even more surprising is that even in this variety of voices, it always is, unmistakably, Jaejoong’s voice.
Actually what I mean by thin voice (in quotation) is his sweet, soft, angelic singing voice so perfect for emotionalism and balancing out all those other 4 voices during harmonies. Well, we are on the same boat, love at first listen ❤ 🙂

He has the smoothest voice, the cleanest one but you tell him to sing his head off and he will do it. He hits high notes and has the versatility no one else in the band has.
There is a reason why Jaejoong is the lead singer, there is a reason why he sings the melody in a capella parts and there is a reason why he’s not necessarily the one you go to for vocal gymnastics (although he does do them). For a capella pieces you need a lead vocal/melody part strong enough to float on top of everyone but good enough to blend all the other voices together – that’s where Jaejoong comes in. The reason why Westlife are so good at a capella is partly because the top and bottom parts are strong but more so because the lead vocals are outstanding – same goes for DBSK, Jaejoong carries the band vocally. You need him in DBSK for the sole purpose of making all these different voices balance out and he does it pretty damn well.
Also, you need someone like Jaejoong on lead vocals because he can sing anything and make it sound like it’s the most natural thing ever.
@ kris Thanks for this review. It says exactly what I wanted to say except I lacked the technical language to express it. I think the word I was looking for was melody. That’s what I meant when I said the song hasn’t started until Jaejoong has “defined its melody.”
The other thing about Jejoong is that he transits so easily from a low to a very high register which others find hard to achieve. This, at times, makes him seem rather casual. At the beginning there used to be comments that he is given only the easy parts because no effort could be seen on his face while Junsu had that characteristic habit of throwing his head back, looking up and making dramatic faces. (YC imitated this habit during the 2015 JYJ fan meeting). So, I think JJ must have heard those comments because then when he sang “It’s Only My World” he was quite dramatic. But of course you never can please the critics; they started commenting that song was too difficult for him. So some fans got angry and posted JJ rehearsing it, singing and walking round the stage without any effort, as if he was singing ‘Baa baa black sheep”

(Sorry for butting in here) One of my favorite things to do when going on the hunt for Jaejoong videos to watch is finding his rehearsal videos for exactly the reasons you just described! I know exactly which video you’re talking about, but WOW I had no idea there was such (made-up/unnecessary) drama over how he rehearses.
@TY No, you are not butting in. This is an open forum and we all share information and opinion. Some of us are new and don’t know some stuff and might find it interesting and even those who were there might have forgotten some details. I am glad you also remember the case. But the drama was not the rehearsal. The drama was that some were saying that the song was beyond his vocals coz “you see how he strains”.so that’s why they posted the vid of the rehearsal to show how easily he was singing it without straining.
May i add something..i like all what has been said,the versatility,flexibility,range and diversity of Jaejoong voice..i’ve known him first in a japanese rock song that ended me up searching for him but didnt bargain up for such a bumpy ride,reading harsh comments,antis and critics but worth it..his soft breathless angelic voice was the one that hit me..that i collect all the song cover he did and find the original song and artist too..while i doing that my mom happen to hear his voice singing boku no soba ni..she likes how jaejoong sings it,even if she don’t understand the words. Whatever Jaejoong sings he sing so beautifully,,that it becomes his song but not losing the soul of the original song.
@ karenina anna Looks like I am like your mom. I really love his cover of Boku no Sobani. And you are right. When he covers someone else’s song, he keeps close to the original, yet he makes it his own coz he makes sure to understand it well and infuses it with feelings. I have read comments by many of the original singers who say that JJ did the best version of their song.
