A letter to the Korean Press
It’s been two weeks since sexual assault claims was brought against Mr. Park Yoochun, and during these two weeks, we saw a big show produced by the Korea Press on the stage.
1. What we see
First of all, is there any evidence that the charge and the subsequent charges against Park Yoochun are substantiated? No, not yet.
The police have so far taken no action against him and offered no evidence. The police are still on investigation.
What we see is that a number of women came forward with allegations against Mr. Park. Among all these accusations, someone withdrew the charge on the second day after her accusation went to public, someone did make allegations to the police but not willing to give evidence, someone made her allegation dated back over a number of years, still no evidence. Most of all, what we see is that the source of the information for the news is the complainant herself or her-selves, and when it comes to the accounts of what really happened of this shameful event, these women went directly to the press rather than to the police.
What we see is that, despite the fact that the complainants keep changing their stories, despite that their own credit is questionable, the press unanimously report all the stories that have been told, without even mentioning this is only one side of the story.
So what is this? This seems to suggest that, if any single individual in Korea wants to mislead or guide the Press/Media and thereafter the public to believe something, true or not, she or he can simply go to the press and tell the story of one side, because the publicare willing to take the word of anyone who makes such accusations, especially if these charges are against a famous name. And the Press is willing to give the public a story without verifying of its factuality, simply feeding their curiosity and anxiety for gossip. Then the whole country will start pointing fingers and call him an asshole. Is this what you want?
2. The responsibility of the Press/Media
What is the responsibility of the Press?
Journalists should strive to uphold freedom of the press, and take public interest as the basis of their work. Journalists should uphold the principles of truth, objectivity and fairness.
We do not question your freedom of reporting. But the importance of a free press lies in that the report is not about “taking down Park Yoochun” neither is it a defense of him. It is about trying to set the record straight.
“IV. News and Commentary
We the journalists pledge ourselves that we will report news to its full extent truthfully, objectively, and in a fair manner. We further pledge ourselves that we will adhere to the truthful information and fairness in presenting analysis, commentary, and opinions, and that by taking the diverse opinions in society into account we will contribute to fostering a healthy public opinion.”
This is Article IV in the Preamble of the Standards of Practice under the Code of Press Ethics, provided by the Korean Newspaper and Broadcasting Editors Association and the Journalists Association of Korea (See eg http://www.mediawise.org.uk/south-korea-2/).
In the Section III of the standards, it provides Guidelines for News Reporting, to name just a few:
“News reports, including news analysis, should be presented with all the factual information confirmed and obtained from clearly identified news sources. Journalists are obligated to seek truthful information affirmatively in order to serve the cause of social justice and public interest.
1. (Distinction between News and Opinion) In news reports, journalists should differentiate facts from opinions. Further, they should not select or write news based on their self-serving personal interests or biases.
2. (Specifying Unconfirmed information) Journalists, in rare cases where they have to use unconfirmed information or unidentified news sources, should make it clear in their reports that they are using such information.
5. (Verifying Information from Pecuniary Interests) In principle, the information provided by news sources should be verified of its factuality before being presented as news. Journalists, in particular, should guard against public relations information efforts of vested commercial interest.”
Did the press stick to the standard?
When you reported only one side of the story making one person look like a pervert, without specifying that it is unconfirmed information, you did not.
When you started mixing your biased comments with the news, adding unfounded guesses with sarcasm, without the distinction between news and opinion, you did not.
When you went to the complainant’s friend and so-called relevant person and dug the so-called “inside story” without verifying its factuality before presented it as news, you did not.
And you reported the same assumption and conjecture day and night, repeated it endlessly, with no verification, as if this were the most crucial and important thing of the whole country that is worth reporting.
Misleading the public and making him the blame for your suffer is in no way to make your world a better place.
The press should be a messenger, not a drama maker.
No one doubts or denies that the press should report the news freely and independently, we only request that you report the news objectively and truthfully!
3. If yes, if no.
As the investigation goes on, the truth beneath the surface started to show itself. The police began to believe that there was an organised gang crime behind the story. That’s where it gets complicated, and that’s why it may take longer for the truth to be revealed. Although we don’t understand why the accused person cannot get access to the information by whom he was accused, we won’t jump to the conclusion. We will keep waiting for the completion of the investigation.
We accepted that public figures and bodies should tolerate more criticism than ordinary people, not less. We also believe that the accounts of those who were supposed to give evidence against Mr Park should be subjected to careful scrutiny in the course of the extensive police investigation.
If what was charged against Mr. Park is true, that is, if the answer is yes, he will be punished by the law. The press and people should criticize him, we will too, seriously, no doubt.
But what if, the answer is No? It is a material fact that, in every single case, there is always 50% of possibility that, the answer is “No”.
So what if NO?
How will the Korea media and the general public react? Unfounded sex crime allegations have a devastating effect on the image, reputation, and often career, of the accused, who will pay the price of the loss? Has any of you appreciated the gravity of the situation, and how easy a simple rumor can cast a shadow over one person’s life.
It will provide insight into how easy it is to make a claim, and how difficult it can be to disprove it.
It will also provide insight into how easy it is to make a rushed judgement of one’s personality, because this is not your life, not your name, not your dignity, not your career; but at least, show some respect, for his fundamental right. A person, famous or not, deserves a fair judgement based on factual charge.
Article 21 (4) of the Korean Constitution provides:
(See eg https://www.humanrights.go.kr/…/inform…/legalMaterials01.jsp)
“Neither speech nor the press shall violate the honor or rights of other persons nor undermine public morals or social ethics. Should speech or the press violate the honor or rights of other persons, claims may be made for the damage resulting therefrom.”
The answer is simple and clear:
Do not judge a person before the truth is revealed.
Do not convict a person before the investigation result is disclosed.
Nobody should!
Let this be our last words.
Yours Faithfully,
Liusu_qingcheng
+ 6002
What does 6002 mean? Thanks
@Tol 6002 in korean is pronounced chunnie
in korean numbers, the numbers when pronounced sound like yuchun ie. 6=yoo(k) 1000 is cheon and 2= (is prounounced as ee) so put them together and you get yoocheonee or yuchunie. its a play one phonics and its pretty cute!

This not only effecting him but think about his Mother and brother. Put yourself in their shoes. Be strong we are here for you. #standbyparkyuchun#
Hello,
First of all, I wish you to know how much I appreciate this site! I have never been a member of a fan club and I almost never post public comments, but this case is breaking my heart and in the search for a source of intelligent and fair commentary, your blog has been a refuge. I live in the U.S. and I haven’t had access to much detailed information, so I have been hesitant to voice any kind of statement regarding the situation, but I cannot hold back any longer. Many of you have mentioned things that I have also been thinking, but there a few things that I would like to say as well…
I have only known of Park Yu Chun for less than a year. However, in that time period, he has made a very deep and positive impression on me. In all of the interviews I have ever watched, I have never seen anything in his behavior or personality that would cause me to question his character. He is human like all of us, and obviously has faults, just as we all do, but I simply do not believe he is the type of person who would commit this type of action.
I do realize that that is a subjective stance though, so I will leave it as a personal statement… Not as something I expect others to necessarily accept. However, in light of the new reports of a fifth woman making similar claims to the first four, I want to share something that has been troubling me about this case from almost the very beginning…
As of this time, as I understand it, all four of the woman who officially accused him work at the same business. Leaving aside the fact that so much of what they claim happened makes no sense, let us assume for a moment that they are telling the truth. IF there was such a consistent pattern on Yu Chun’s part, and they all work at the same place and in presumably the same time period, then why, as women, did they not warn their fellow co-workers about him? Even if they were afraid that no one outside the adult entertainment industry would believe them because of their occupation, then why were they at least not attempting to prevent such a thing from happening to other women in the establishment? I would like an answer to that question. Even if they felt they would not get justice for themselves, what was preventing them from taking such a simple action in protection of others?
I would also like to know if any of them have ever filed a complaint of assault before this. Yes, maybe they could have been frightened of reporting a celebrity, but it seems highly unlikely to me that over the course of their employment, there hasn’t been at least one instance of a non-celebrity drunk jerk getting out of line and trying to attack them. How likely is it that in four different cases the one and only time it has supposedly happened it also just HAPPENS to be someone who is wealthy and has a lot to lose? It is true that only a small percentage of rape accusations are false, but how often do those cases involve these factors?
Not only that, but people keep bringing up the fact that the consistency of their stories gives them credibility. If they did not know each other, and their situations were unconnected, then that would make sense, but given the fact that they do all know each other, and therefore how easy it is to coordinate their stories, then it would actually be more believable if their accounts differed from each other just slightly.
I am not even totally convinced that it is the women themselves who are behind this. If it is true that there are gang connections, they may simply be pawns in a much larger scheme. They may even have been threatened by their employers to cause them to take these actions against Yu Chun.
Again… These are just things that have been bothering me regarding the logic of those who have almost automatically taken the side of the accusers. I will continue to wait for the outcome of the investigation and pray that it is conducted fairly. I have been praying almost constantly for Yu Chun and his family and will continue to do so. I know that God can bring them through this dark situation and that He still has a good plan for Yu Chun’s life. I am also praying for these women, because whether or not they are lying, they are living in a very negative environment and cannot have good lives. I am praying that truth and justice will prevail and that those who wish to harm the lives of innocent people would be held accountable for their actions. Though men are unjust and unqualified to judge, God is not. He knows every detail of this case, and I will trust in His character just as I am choosing to trust Yu Chun.
I wanted to say these things because I have never witnessed such a one sided attack on an individual who has never shown even the slightest hint of disrespect toward women as far as I can tell. Who seems like such a caring, good natured, and sensitive person. I am so thankful there are places like this were those who would not otherwise have a platform are able to voice their support and concern.
Blessings to each of you and prayers for Yu Chun from Texas! #standbyparkyuchun#
good points. thank you for your post. i am with you in Utah~
@koreamom Thanks! 🙂 I’m a very shy person naturally and it’s hard for me to express myself, especially publicly, but I just can’t stand sitting idly by when someone I respect is being so unfairly treated by the press, so I forced myself to speak this one time. I see now that in my nervousness I had a few typos, but I hope that my thoughts were still clear enough to be understood.
i thought you expressed your concerns very well.
Thank you for coming up with the courage to speak up for Yoochun. I’m not a fan of JYJ either. I got to know Yoochun through Rooftop Prince and Sungkwankyun Scandal dramas only a few months ago. His acting, charm, and natural good looks caught my interest, so I did further research on he was. I have since been impressed by his work, his conviction to fight SM (and won), his singing and dancing and the songs he’s composed. I was also moved by the fact that he suffered financially and ridiculed by classmates (for not speaking English well) while living in Virginia, USA. Despite of these hurdles in life at a young age, he worked and save money to be where and who he is now. Like you said, his character and values are inconsistent with a sexual predator.
I plan to see this through the end with the hope that they will find him innocent of all charges. He’s a versatile and great artist. I’ve never seen a Korean actor or Asian actor per se that could move so many people around the world like he does. He’s loved!
From New York City, USA #standbyparkyuchun#
@Kikay My experience was very similar to yours. I first came to know about Yu Chun from his acting and that led me to watch interviews with him. I was very impressed by all of the things you listed, but I think one of the things that I was most moved by was his relationship with his family. In my mind, I simply cannot see how someone who is so loving and protective toward his family, and particularly his mother, would ever intentionally hurt a woman. It is entirely inconsistent behavior. I know that I do not know him on a personal level, but I have much more evidence to gauge his integrity and character than I do the people accusing him of these crimes, and all of that evidence leads me to trust him in this situation. He is indeed loved and respected by many people, and I hope that for every voice that is spreading hasty and hurtful rumors against him, there will be just as many people who will raise their voices in support of fairness. If he is proven innocent of these charges, have not the Korean Press essentially committed rape against him in robbing him of his innocence without any proof? Why is that not also a crime? Why are the press not subject to laws protecting people from defamation? #standbyparkyuchun#
Same here! But it goes like this for me : watching the girl who sees smells –> love at first sight with the main lead…his rich expressions, his deep and sexy voice… –> googling everything about Park Yoochun –> came to know about JYJ, Jaejoong and Junsu, the lawsuit –> hypnotized by the boys’ voices and performances –> following up everything about them, especially Yoochun in this site
I’m also a shy person…even I’m not from English speaking country, even to make a simple comment I check the words in the translator first. Kekeke~
We actually don’t know him personally or more deeply, but even the people who work with him state that he is a good person that respectful to everyone, including women. But still, I’m agree with you that Yoochun is human just like us who can make mistakes. I wonder what sin he has committed to get this kind of treatment. Maybe God wants to test him if he strong enough to face the obstacles at the peak of popularity.
Gathering evidences and testimonies for four accusations will take soooo long time…weeks or even months. At that time, there will be more crazy articles, negative comments, and stupid rumor. Let’s pray till the truth comes to light.
@Arumi Thank you for your comment! 🙂 It was very intelligent and well worded, even if English is not your first language. I can’t believe that I have left so comments today. I apologize for being so verbose! It is not usually in my nature to be so talkative since my opinion is nothing particularly important. Nevertheless, I just wanted to reply to one thing that you mentioned… Even though we all have faults and commit sins, I do not think that the bad experiences in our lives are always a direct result of that. Yes, actions have consequences, but often, the things that we perceive to be bad at the time, are actually necessary to make it possible for something better to happen. I am not God, and I cannot say why He is allowing this to happen in Yu Chun’s life, but in the same way that hurricanes are essential for keeping the climate of the world stable; surgery, though painful, is sometimes needed to save someone’s life; and seeds must break apart in order for new life to spring forth, perhaps God has a better path that He is directing Yu Chun toward through this means. It isn’t necessarily either a punishment or a test, but something that God, in His wisdom, is allowing because He knows where it will lead. That is my prayer… That regardless of the outcome of this case and the pain of this experience, I hope that in the end, it will be but a stepping stone toward even greater blessings for Yu Chun and his family. Not necessarily fame and popularity, but rather a peace and joy that cannot be taken from him, no matter how people perceive him.
You’re welcome! Me too. Even if there is positive article about Yoochun I never left comment before. Just smiling or clamoring excitedly in front of my laptop. Haha… Maybe this scandal is so bothering our mind that even the new fans around the world are going crazy. It’s really messy.
Whoa..what a beautiful words you have here.. =) I agree that we need balance and stability, both the sweetness and the sourness in life to make us remember God, The Creator who can makes everything possible. I also hope that Yoochun get something better in the end. Even if so many people perceive him, I believe that he’s still loved. #standbyparkyuchun#
@Arumi 🙂 If even shy people like us can find the courage to speak, hopefully many others will join in supporting Yu Chun. He is indeed loved, and there are many, many people who want to see his happy smile again! Let’s all make sure he knows that! #standbyparkyuchun#
i am on that petition in my heart.
Anyone remember about ‘a mother and her children claim to press that they were assaulted for years’ last year? I don’t know the details. But seems like they make a lot of people turn into fools. This got nothing to do with Yoochun case, but I think media is easily manipulated by “bad people” to seek or distract people attention. Some people also got this disease called “They believe what they want to believe”. Aigo…
It’s called “character assassination”, trying to destroy someone because you can. Already on Wikipedia there is info about the sexual assault case against Yuchun. Of course it paints him in a bad light. I said once someplace, that JYJ are too successful and that’s why they are always attacked, but there is probably some truth to that. Junsu, is now getting more media attention, and JJ and Yuchun are spotlighted, even though they are in military service. Certain people in the entertainment industry can’t face the reality that these men are so talented and loved they can survive years of blacklisting without belonging to a large entertainment company. Sadly Korea lets people/media etc. get away with destroying lives, so they can entertain the public, no matter the cost to the accused. I’m glad more and more are not afraid to speak out in support of Yuchun. Add my voice to that support.
Courage, Yuchun! We are with you!
There’s a 5th allegation towards Yoochun came up yesterday’s night…by the media obviously…and there is a show “Heard through a Grapevine” has been making issues with regards to Yoochun’s case especially by the psychoanalyst named “Park Young Jin”, he’s been saying things about Yoochun which is of course not a good thing, his theory about Yoochun as a rapist…..check these out guys…I’m not siding with anybody, however, I hate illogical and nonfactual statements by people like these…
If Dispatch had solid proof against Yoochun, they would have gone straight to the police. Instead, they interviewed more ‘victims’ from the same shady establishment citing no dates (lol, they learnt their lesson that Yoochun’s fans know all about his schedule) and all following the same rehearsed script.
I won’t be surprised if there will be more of such stories from “traumatised victims” who willingly go public to “disclose everything”. I have a feeling these are tactics to thwart the police from closing this case quickly. Gangs are really scary and their reach is wide. I hope Yoochun will continue to keep strong.
Lol, regarding that quack psychoanalyst, he should have spent his time better analysing the psychopathic behaviour of netizens who displayed unjustified anger towards someone they don’t even know and advising them to seek help.
Leonardo da Vinci was thought to be a nutcase too because people looked at the inventions that he drew and thought these were the works of the devil.
@jyjpathfinder Yes, I completely agree! That is one reason I have stopped looking for “news” on this case outside of this blog. There is no way to verify anything any of these reports are claiming. They suddenly, and rather conveniently, come up with a fifth alleged victim, just as a couple of actual facts related to police statements were going in Yu Chun’s favor, and there is absolutely no way of knowing if this alleged victim even exists, let alone if anything she’s saying is true. Her name has not been disclosed, and she says she never filed a police report nor does she intend to do so. Anybody…. I repeat, ANYBODY could make those claims! Until someone shows me some actual proof instead of “claims” and “accusations”, I’m going to entirely ignore anything Dispatch and these other supposed news sources have to say. Also, regarding the testimony of the second woman… I’m sorry, but even the speech pattern of the things she’s claiming Yu Chun said don’t fit him. Every person has particular patterns in the way they phrase things, and I have never heard Yu Chun say anything in even remotely that manner. I’m not saying he couldn’t, but it just adds to the suspicious nature of everything else these women have said so far.
It is so heartwarming to see fan from different countries with different belief and culture comes together to support him at time like this.and just after fan show our strong support, the media started to release about woman no.5 and even the interview with the supposed victims, they really have the perfect timing i tell you.whatever it is unless the truth is proven then i’m behind him, supporting him.
It’s best if CJeS do not volunteer any information to the media. I know they are being provoked by the reports that are coming out but they should just hang onto their horses. The media is trying to try the case through them, but what they say doesn’t matter. The women are doing this sort of thing because they know their case isn’t strong and so they go running to the media to try and get sympathy from the public. However, if there are any holes in their statements to the media, Yoochun’s side will use it against them. For example, when the woman says she decided to have sex after he said he wanted her telephone number, this shows she consented to the sex. So she is hanging herself with her own words.
We should just wait for the police reports and if it goes to a trial, we should wait for the court case reports. Let’s not place any additional pressure on CJeS right at this moment. CJeS shouldn’t have to think about what the fans want right now. We should just be patient and try and not feel provoked, and keep a cool head, and just show our support.
I can already detect a lie when she says that her employers don’t encourage the girls to have sex with their clients because prostitution is illegal.
Ten Cafe owners know they are running a bordello disguised as a high-class entertainment bar, and it’s well-known that the workers there give different kinds of sex to the customers at the end of the first cha. Even though it may not be intercourse, it is still sex. The Ten Cafe owners get a cut of what the prostitutes receive from their customers.
Love YooChun regardless … I thank him for the wonderful Kdramas Sungkyunkwan Scandal, I Miss You, Rooftop Prince, Three Days and even his portraying in Miss Ripley was alright. I believe that he is innocent of the charges. Take care and be strong dear Micky.
