Junsu looks less than thrilled with the hat deal!! 😀
Aren’t those big hats for ladies? What are they doing to him?
I had been wanting to make that comment and at the risk of being too presumptuous will make it now. Dorian Gray was written in 1891 (the late Victorian era) No man would wear a hat like that at that time, before or even after. These are women Ascot hats (to wear in the sun at the horse races at Ascot). Until that time men wore top hats with narrow brims and standing tall on the head which were always black. Around that time the brim started widening a bit (not much) and the height became a bit shorter. Darker shades of brown or grey started appearing. The new invention of the 1890iies was the straw boater (which should have been on Junsu’s head) which is made of straw, so it has light yellowish colour, about 2-3 inch wide brim and a black ribbon round the lower part of the top.
I am sure you can see many examples if you google late Victorian men’s fashion.
Having said that, the directors of films, theatre etc, have the poetic license to interpret the source and use their imagination according to what, in their opinion, would best represent the character. Still, dressing men in women’s hats is a little bit extreme for some of us.
