Popularity Award Kim Junsu

Having accomplished the astonishing achievement of being awarded the Golden Ticket Awards’ Popularity Award for 5 years in a row, it is a repeat in conversation in which Kim Junsu continues to thank audiences. Especially in the case of the Popularity Award, because the meaning is greater and more touching since the outcome was attained only with the audience’s votes.
Kim Junsu climbed onstage without rest; starting with <Dracula> at the beginning of the year, creative musical <Dorian Gray> in the second half of the year, and up to <Death Note> which he is in the middle of performing currently.
“In the case like <Dracula>, it is a work I love to the extent of saying ‘I want to do this work if I must do only one work in my whole life’. I tell the audiences a lot to see the new possibilities of me as an actor, and it is a performance I also felt the greatest attraction to.
<Dorian Gray> was a work where the musical feels once over like a total work of art (‘Gesamtkunstwerk’). In fact, I have thoughts of doing and singing in many musicals, and wanting to make more diverse attempts at musicals, as well as, acting. By the way I liked that I was able to show a variety of images including dancing though this work up to the visual parts. It’s a work that I can consider to be a composite art. The hard part, while abridging the vast contents, was the part where I must not miss the underlying theme of ‘beauty’. The image of characters going mad at beauty has to be convincing to the audiences. Thus I needed selection and focus due to these parts.”
It’s his 8th year as a musical actor. Exceeding his idol status and being reborn as world-class musical actor before we knew it, he has even expressed regrets toward the still-relatively-small musical market.
“It’s sad the musical market has remained in a stage where it still has to grow in comparison to movies. As a musical actor, I wish I could fortify it with a genre that receives a lot of people’s loves to cement the market base. To do that, I think the role I can do is create a performance where the audiences can feel satisfaction for having paid the high costs. If so many audience members visit the performance venue a lot, investments will increase and excellent works in better environments can be made.”
Kim Junsu who will remain as an officer of South Korea’s armed forces when he leaves the top of the stage for a while at the end of 2017’s musical <Death Note>. What does a hiatus of 2 years for him ahead of his upcoming military enlistment in February mean? Unlike the concern about the worries that lies ahead, he answers with a calm voice rather.
“I think I have done a lot of activities emptying myself continuously for the past 12 years. Shouldn’t the 2-year period that I’ll spend in the military be a period to replenish myself with something? Also I think I will be able to gain a lot from a community life amongst you after a long time. I am going to show you a better image after 2 years. Please wait until the end.”
