News of the arrival of South Korean boyband JYJ prompted hundreds of fans to camp out on the streets recently to get closer to the trio. But this wasn’t in Seoul or even Tokyo: it was in Lima.
Having taken Asia by storm over the past decade with bubblegum hooks and dance moves infused with military precision, South Korea’s K-pop phenomenon continues to defy language barriers and find fans around the world. As South Korea continues to export its culture, K-pop’s polished fusion of influences ranging from hip-hop to dubstep is winning a growing number of passionate followers in Latin America.
JYJ has held sellout concerts there and a Colombian TV station is airing a K-pop talent show. Latin American fans have posted hundreds of videos on YouTube showing flash mobs emulating K-pop dance moves and urging their favourite stars to visit the continent, despite many not having officially released songs outside Asia.
[NEWS] JYJ Wraps Up Successful 15-City World Tour
JYJ completed their 15-city world tour with the end of their concert in Peru on March 11. JYJ’s world tour began last April in Thailand, visiting all continents except Africa over the past year.
For this world tour concert, JYJ had a three year preparation period. With the strong preparation, JYJ became the first K-Pop artist to hold a solo concert in Peru and Chile. In total, the world tour is estimated to have brought in over 210,000 people to all concerts.
“All the concerts sold over 80% of its tickets, while 12 cities sold out,” JYJ’s agency, C-JeS Entertainment said in a statement.
“We were truly surprised by the huge crowd waiting at the airport and hotel. I had no idea we would get to see things that only happened in Asia here in South America. We’re so happy and we’ll do our best to return the favor with a better concert,” Yoochun said.
JYJ’s agency added, “JYJ’s world tour showed us success but also homework to take care of. We didn’t leave the concert to third party agencies, and instead visited every city in advance to plan a concert that suited each country, which is the main reason for our success. However, we need to solve issues regarding long-term plans to interact with fans in each country and find ways to distribute albums in Europe and Latin America.”
Meanwhile, JYJ will focus on individual activities and recording for their second English album, which is slated for release in the second half of this year.

Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu demonstarted before the Chilean media that “music is a language without borders and unites them all”.
At the end of the 2011-2012 World Tour by popular South Korean K-Pop group, JYJ, the group arrived to Santiago, Chile to present a concert before thousands of fans.
According to them, this tour through South America has a special meaning for them, for they have produced these concerts specifically for their Latin American fans.
“We are very delighted to have been able to keep our promise to our fans and will prepare a spectacular show to correspond with the passion of Latin America,” remarked the K-Pop idols before the press.
“The countries are very distant from each other, it’s a 30 hour flight. Also, even though the countries are very far from each other, we have always believed to have been very close,” they further added.
Press Conference
During the press conference, the boys voiced their opinion against piracy, arguing that the issue not only “affects” them as a group, but also other groups who strive to succeed.
In regards to Chile, Jaejoong, Yoochun y Junsu confessed that had imagined a very different country. The artists felt that the metropolitan capital was actually a rather calm town.
One of the characteristics that has really grabbed their attention is the Chilean culture. For example, they mentioned the reaction of a fan who was waiting anxiously for them at the airport and upon seeing them coming, came to embrace them warmly, a practice not common on the other side of the world.
The members of JYJ stated that they did not expect to find such a large number of fans. The South Korean idols are happy to see that the K-Pop has expanded successfully into the world.
Finally, they emphasized that for them music is a language without borders “that unites all.”

[PICS+NEWS] 120308 Korean Group Is In Awe With The Chilean Landscape
On their first visit to Chile, JYJ commented on their experience with their fans and how happy they feel regarding their concert in Santiago.
“The view of the hotel is stunning, I have never seen it before (referring to the mountains). I have noticed that is calm, different from what people think in Korea,” Yoochun stated during a press conference today at the Hotel W. In addition, the members talked about the delay of their flight to this country and also about the love that fans have sent them with kisses and hugs.
The group consists of Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu, musically debuted as part of another group called TVXQ* in 2003 with two other singers. JYJ has officially been around as a group since 2010 and together they have achieved several successes, such as their single with American musician, Kanye West and a topping world charts with their album sales.
The boys will perform a solo concert at the Caupolican Theatre this Friday, March 9 with the support of six dancers. Their last stop in South America will be in Peru. Both VIP and Preferred tickets are sold out.

[NEWS] 120115 JYJ impresses with fast ticket sales in South America
Last week, JYJ announced that they will embark on their first South American tour.
Ticket sales opened up on January 12th and were almost sold out that very day.
On January 15th, JYJ’s agency C-JeS Entertainment stated, “Last Thursday, we began selling tickets for the tour in South America and right when we opened the window, we sold 80% of the 5,000 seats in Chile and Peru.” Read More →
