The musical “Death Note” returns to Seoul after two years, as well as its star Kim Jun-su from JYJ. Kim will bid farewell for the time being with this show as he will start his mandatory military service next year.

The musical premiered in Japan in April 2015 and made a successful debut in Korea three months later. Featuring music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy from a story by by Ivan Menchel, the musical revolves around a fierce battle of wits between Light Yagami, a high school student who metes out his own justice, and Detective L, who tries to put a stop to him.

The show relies the most heavily on Kim, who plays the eccentric Detective L.

Kim, who debuted in SM Entertainment’s five-member boy band TVXQ in 2003, left the company to form a trio JYJ with two other former TVXQ members Jaejoong and Yoochun. Amid difficulties in appearing on television shows, Kim made a brilliant debut as a musical actor in “Mozart!” in 2010, becoming a definite game changer in Korean theater. All tickets for his shows were sold out and he soon became highly sought-after among theater producers. Kim’s agency C-JeS Entertainment entered the theater industry in 2015, producing “Death Note” and “Dorian Gray.”

Kim was praised for his portrayal of L in 2015 with his signature metallic voice and his concentration on the character. He said he is now putting in even more effort to develop the character, prior to his military service.

‘Death Note’ was awarded the top prize in the Musical category at the ‘3rd eDaily Culture Awards’ award ceremony and Gala Concert, held at the Haeorum Theater of the National Theater in Jangchung-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul on the 19th. Embarking as the top prize winner’s representative, group JYJ member and musical actor Kim Junsu stated his thoughts, like this, “I am accepting this award with praise and encouragement. I promise that I shall go forward in creating a better work in the future ahead”. Kim Junsu received favorable reviews, reborn as a convincing character when he undertook the role of the genius detective L in ‘Death Note’.

Kim Junsu began to speak with, “I would like convey words of thanks on behalf of the performance cast and production crew of 100 people”. Continuing, he also said, “‘Death Note’ had its first cultivation in Korea when it hit the stage last summer; and I am grateful that this award has more meaning, as much as it was C-JeS Culture’s first debut work,” and, “I am thankful to Baek Chang-joo who had helped the work go up, in the one word that I only want to do it, and to have been directed by Japan’s Kuriyama Tamiya who undertook the directing of its Korean version”.

Adding, he completed his thoughts, “Teamwork between the actors was important to proceed as a one-cast with my previous installment of 57 performances. I shall share this pleasure with actors & actresses Hong Kwang-ho, Park Hye-na, Kang Hong-seok, and Jung Sun-ah; who created the stage together with me. I am accepting this award with praise and encouragement for C-JeS Culture and I promise that I shall go forward in creating a better work in the future ahead”.

The musical “Death Note,” one of the most highly anticipated theatrical spectacles of the year, has raised its curtain at the Opera House of Seongnam Arts Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul.

The show _ featuring music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy and book by Ivan Menchell _ is directed by Japanese director Tamiya Kuriyama. It premiered in Tokyo in April, before staging its first licensed production in Korea.

The musical is based on the internationally popular Japanese manga series of the same name, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It revolves around high school student Light Yagami, who picks up a “God of Death” notebook, which enables the user to kill anyone. As soon as he realizes the power of the “Death Note,” Light decides to build an ideal world by killing criminals based on his own justice.

In the Korean production, top musical actor Hong Kwang-ho, who just returned from a one-year stint as Thuy in “Miss Saigon” in London’s West End, takes the role of Light, while K-pop sensation Kim Jun-su of JYJ plays Light’s arch-rival, detective L, a genius who tries to put a stop to Light’s immature attempts.
