Among idol-turned-actors, it seems like Jaejoong acts well.
His fine appearance coexists with an outsider-like rebellion; he gives out the same vibe as Hong Kong’s star Leslie Cheung.
Every episode, Kim Jaejoong, on the basis of pleasing vocalization and tone, develops more and more various facial expressions and got the incomparable position of leading role. To the point that people feel that the “idol-turned-actor” name tag is awkward. [Source] Read More →
Watching Kim Jaejoong in <Triangle>, I think about Kim Hyunjoong in KBS “Age of Feeling” and Park Yoochun in SBS <Three Days>. They are the representatives of 2nd generation of “acting-dol”. Kim Jaejoong and Park Yochun was in TVXQ, Kim Hyunjoong was in SS501. If Jung Ryeowon-Hwang Jungeum-Yoon Kyesang ect., the 1st generation of idol-turned-actors, replaced their idol image by actor image; the 2nd generation still owes to the halo of idol image. The reason why I think about Kim Hyunjoong and Park Yoochun while watching Kim Jaejoong is that, I feel that their pace this year will be a turning point in their career. These actors, who have debuted with the roles which borrowed their idol image – Prince-like characters – came back one by one with blockbusters. While Kim Hyunjoong and Park Yoochun showed off weighty acting, Kim Jaejoong doesn’t fall behind Lee Bumsoo in terms of strong presence, which is another evolution. His transformation is also the most shocking. Kim Hyunjoong and Park Yoochun emitted tough masculinity. Nevertheless, they still maintain good-natured and heroic image. The character Huh Youngdal of Kim Jaejoong is pure gangster. His remarkable determination shone from the scene he ran for his life wearing only boxers due to a secret love affair with a married woman. However, through this scene, that he exposes his pain while saying, “Have you ever seen a dream coming true? When I was panhandler, I’ve had countless dreams. But never once did any of my dreams ever come true,” seeing how he spoke with restraint, which doubled the sadness, I can tell that his acting definitely matured. The idol-turned-actors who suffer from various reasons such as prejudice against idol, lack of self-effort, etc., another example worth taking as role model, was born.

Summing up in Five Lines
The gangster in Sabuk, Youngdal (Kim Jaejoong) extorts money here and there to gamble. He doesn’t budge– no matter how much money he loses, nothing can stop him. However, you can feel the depth in his eyes when he looks at Junghee (Baek Jinhee), whom he encounters quite often. On the other hand, detective Dongsoo (Lee Bumsoo) is dying to arrest the villain Go Boktae. His old friend – profiler Shinhye (Oh Yeonsu), who got to know that he has problem in controlling his anger, visits him and tells him that he needs treatment. Once again, Dongsoo exposes unnecessary anger toward Shinhye.
Review
It’s impossible to avoid the comparison between ‘Triangle’ and the previous record-breaking drama of the combo Choi Wankyu-Yoo Cheolyong – ‘All In’, as all the leading actors who have strong presence are placed in a casino background. It’s irrefutably obvious that they paid a lot of attention to the scenes in the casino. As the drama goes on, it seems that the casino will become the main background. Therefore, this drama possibly goes head to head with ‘All In’, the drama that people will naturally think of when talking about Choi Wankyu-Yoo Cheolyong unit.
While the production crew intends to play against ‘All In’, the curtain of ‘Triangle’ has gone up. By destiny, the women started to slowly appear in the rough life of the three brothers. Though that process was painted profoundly, we can’t help point out that the motif is kind of old. Even so, ‘Triangle’ still has its own flavor. The motif is old but there is still room to make it new in the characters.
In the first episode of the drama, Kim Jaejoong, who plays Huh Youngdal, is eye-catching. He puts on the tailor-made suit for this character who has lost direction and lives hopelessly, and added freshness to the drama with his natural acting. I don’t know what shakes his heart but his sharp eyes and the raw madness in it mixed well with Kim Jaejoong’s unique image. Read More →
Note: Kim Jaejoong’s WWW Professional Review in Russian Website “HeadBanger”, dedicated to the Rock/Metal/gothic
Written by Ксения Артамонова – one of their permanent reviewer and also the author of the “InRock” magazine
About “Mine”:
Album «Mine» was a bit of shock therapy for both fans and skeptics – it looks like the unexpected heavy sound of his 1 single and main composition was something intentional: as if to say: “I want to and I will (do what I want), be afraid”.
About WWW:
But there is a reason why I described (WWW) as “legit” – indeed, in this album there is nothing far-fetched. It doesn’t have some kind of glamorous plateresque, it isn’t overflowing, neither is it an comical attempt to become “the second someone”, it isn’t bombastic or pretentious too.
Yes, it’s a cyborg, collected from the songs of various authors – starting from the performer (JJ) himself, as well as other Korean and foreign composers – and set in motion by guest musicians.
But, on the one hand, the wide range of participants made this album diverse: as if each song “scoops up” something from the bottomless depths of the alternative rock.
And on the other hand, within this cyborg beats living human heart – it’s (WWW) winningly sincere and natural.
All compositions on this CD are connected by restrained, but expressive and rich in its tiniest shades of tones vocal, which emotionality compensates the obvious problems of not understanding the lyrics by non-Korean listeners.
And just this emotional “fullness” and self-sufficiency categorically denies all the fears that may be caused by the status of the artist (JJ being an idol and all).
But the thing, that pleases even more, is that WWW isn’t artificial or pretentious. In it, oddly enough, there is a “garage” roughness, simplicity and honesty, not achievable in the “laboratory conditions”. It was created with a sincere desire to record a live album, not smothered by redundant efforts to “make it nice”.
What this work lacks is bigger musical courage, brightness and originality. A significant part of the material on it was boring in its secondary (something similar was heard before). In addition, it would be desirable to increase the degree of juiciness and drive. But I strongly doubt, that all these wonderful characteristics could have been achieved, by working with freelance musicians over the debut album under time pressure. Perhaps it will come later, along with the confidence, the right people and desire to go further. In the meantime, Kim Jaejoong introduced to the world an album, which at minimum he won’t regret creating in the future and which, although doesn’t claim to be a masterpiece, has become a phenomenon unique to the South Korean music industry.

When Kim Jaejoong took his first steps into the rock genre with this year’s release of I, many were (unsurprisingly) skeptical. After all, pretty boys come and go, and so many of them want to be “taken seriously,” attempting to go outside their comfort zones, to varying levels of success. However, when his first single dropped, all talk of him being nothing more than a rocker wannabe was veritably squashed.

Q: You are celebrating your 10th anniversary since debut this year. When was the most rewarding moment to you, Kim Jaejoong, throughout your 10-year career?
– This very moment. A full-length solo album itself was a heavy challenge to me. But here it is, <WWW>, thanks to everyone’s supports. It was more rewarding because non-fans loved it very much unexpectedly.
Q: What’s your resolution for a new year [the future]?
– Having 10 years passed makes me dream of ‘Return’, not ‘Reset’. Although I’ve endeavored to achieve this and that and I’ve reached who I am now, I always needed a bigger fillip to better growth. The toughest time to me, personally, is when I can’t feel the growing pains. Therefore, I want to go back to the day I knew nothing and start all over again. If I was a 1 back then, I will become a 1 again and grow as this 1 originally wanted to do. So my goal is to connect a 10 to a 1 again to continue growing. Only then I’m going to be happy all along, I guess.
Q: Please share your anecdote about concert practice.
– Since it’s not what I do alone but with a band, I wasn’t able to practice more than once a day. Also because the numbers are physically demanding, I tried to refrain from practicing excessively not to strain my throat. To pick a memorable one, it is that the guest performers were 4, but 3 of them came to practice with me all at the same time and on the same day, so I had to sing the same song over and over again. Of course I could not say this to my seniors [sunbaenims], but to be honest it was so grueling. (laughs)
