How was Park Yuchun in playing the role of Dong-sik?
He’s a person I’m really thankful for. He took good care of me always as Dong-sik, and made me be as focused as much as him. I guess I can’t help it that I have affections for Yuchun-ssi because he is Dong-sik. And since I went into it trying to do my best the whole time, I also had a lot of thoughts, like, ‘If I can betray this person’s true feelings, I am not going to. He is shooting his first movie with so much dedication, I should work hard too’.
On June 12, Kim Yoon-seok said, “Although my name is up on my past works like ‘Hwayi: The Boy Who Swallowed A Monster[/A Monster Boy]'(2013) and ‘Haemoo/Sea Fog'(2014) as a lead role, I think I am the supporting lead actually”.
“To say clearly, Yeo Jin-goo in ‘Hwayi’ and Park Yuchun in ‘Sea Fog’ are the main leads. I should be the key supporting lead. I’ve seen how it makes no sense to complain about ‘Why does my name appear after?’ in the position of a senior. Rather, we should freely, with a flexible position, let the juniors grow greater.”
Your current film is Haemoo, where you go from this tight enclosed train, to the fearful openness of the ocean. You said with Snowpiercer you built your story around the setting, was this film made similarly?
I am definitely fascinated by groups of people trapped inside of a space, or inside of a system. In that sense Haemoo is definitely similar to Snowpiercer. But even though the story takes place on a large expansive ocean the characters are all stuck inside this tiny boat as big as a dot. Of course there is a lot of freedom to be out in that environment, but I wanted to highlight that space to show that they are in fact in a very tiny jail. On top of that when the fog rolls in it even becomes more constrained, its a much smaller world suddenly than the train of Snowpiercer, it’s much for suffocating and stifling. In that sense its a lot more claustrophobic than Snowpiercer.
