[INTERVIEW] 130129 US Hit Producer: Kim Junsu reminds me of Michael Jackson

As K-pop continues to stretch ever forward into the world’s music market, the genre has been blessed with contributions from major movers and shakers from the US market on numerous occasions. From JYJ‘s early collaboration with Kanye West and the Wonder Girls release of Like Money featuring Akon, to the anticipated collaborations between PSY and Scooter Braun and 2NE1‘s work with will.I.AM, more and more international music producers and artists are getting bit by the K-pop bug.

Recently we sat down with producer and songwriter Bruce “Automatic” Vanderveer who made his K-pop debut with his collaboration with JYJ’s soulful vocalist Kim Junsu on the English single Uncommitted that was released in August 2012. We set out to not only get to know Mr. Vanderveer better, but grab some insights on how his collaboration with Junsu came to be – what was is like meeting and working with him, and how the fan’s reaction to the collaboration has changed his view on not only K-pop and its scores of fans but also the limitless talent and global potential of JYJ and its members.

[RANKING NEWS/REVIEW] Kim Junsu Tops the August V-chart of China YinYueTai + Comments by Music Critics

Music critic for the August V-chart of China YinYueTai: BaoBao （爆爆）, the Executive Chief Editor of the South Korea Division of Cool Music (Cool轻音乐), a famous Chinese magazine for K-pop & J-pop

Today, Kim Junsu has the first-class background, the first-class talent, the first-class diligence and the first-class popularity, so it is almost as sure as nails that his new single—Uncommitted—will top the August V-chart. What’s more commendable than his incredible talent is that he never forgets who he is despite all the fame and success he has gained. Unquestionably he is now in a position where he can make his fans go crazy for him by only doing some sexy duckbutt-shaking or high notes. But he doesn’t want to stay where he is. He wants to be a real singer, a singer who wants to make everyone fall for his singing and dancing in spite of the lack of fair promotion on TV.

A globally best team was put together for Uncommitted. This R&B pop song, written and composed by Bruce Automatic Vanderveer, takes Junsu away from the K-pop world and into the western music world. Although one cannot connect Junsu in reality with the playboy described in the MV, Junsu’s acting as a good man with a playboy history is convincing since he has proven himself that he can successfully express temptation, Yuppie and darkness through his eyes. In this MV directed by Marc Klasfeld, a famous MV director for super stars, Junsu is telling you a love story through his eyes in every scene. With “Angel Xiah” (a characteristic gesture of Junsu, with both hands under his chin, a slight tilt of his head and the tadpole-like smiling eyes) in our memories, Junsu has grown up to be a brave and reliable man. Uncommitted? No. Junsu has been fulfilling the commitments he’s made to himself and his fans, as always; and he has been surprising us, as always.

For starters: damn! We totally forgot to mention something in this week’s video. We mentioned it on Twitter before, but not really in a video. Hey guise: know how we’re so often called YG biased? Why’s no one ever calling us Xia biased? Have we ever said anything bad about him? I mean, Ayy Girl was a horribly embarrassing video, but we still loved it, and it became one of our longest running jokes ever. Intoxication we never even reviewed, but you’ve heard our cheesy rendition of it everywhere. I’d say we’ve shown our bias to Junsu more than all of the YG artists combined. We’re very PSY biased as well, FYI: would love to review more of his videos.

There. I think we’re a bit more clear now. We like Xia, we like the song, we like JYJ, and we’d like to review this. We’re not sure if our review will be good or not, but we’d like to support Junsu and JYJ as much as possible, considering how sucky things are for them in Korea, and how much better they should be. From should-be-institutionalized-for-being-crazy-stalkers to their ordeals with SM, we feel bad for JYJ. But we like their music. If their music sucked we wouldn’t care, but they – especially Junsu – constantly provide us with fun songs. So: vote for them. We’ll provide what little promotion for them we can.
