[FULL TRANS] Singles Magazine – July 2014 Issue – Park Yuchun’s Interview
{T/N: Although the July issue has been out for some time. I’ve decided to translate this. The translation has taken up a lot of my time and effort, but I know many JYJ fans out there would want to know and understand the present Yuchun more. I really enjoy reading this interview, and I hope you enjoy it too!}
The Man Who Turns Into Light, Park Yuchun
Park Yuchun threw himself on top of the rustling white bedsheets while scratching his foot. “I was bitten by 10 mosquitoes last night”. The faces of those staff gathered from 6am at the hotel room, trying to get away from the Macao heat which can make you lose your reasoning, began to soften (T/N: after Yuchun said that). Despite still having to make a few more clothes change (T/N: for the photo-shoot), Yuchun continued on and even boast that he can finish this kind of tough job by the morning, and his prediction was correct. There was Park Yuchun who approaches the staff himself, and there were staff who trust him. Even though no information was put up at official channels about the schedule of this photo-shoot in Macao, fans waited at the airport. Same with the day he headed back to Korea. When the bus window was opened, the happy birthday song rang throughout Macao international airport. His birthday was 2 days ago. News reported that 6000 people attended his individual fan meeting a few days later. Since his debut, there was never a moment when the public didn’t want him.
From <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> to <Three Days>, his filmography has turned more and more solid, capturing the attention of those in the production industry. His screen debut and soon to premiere <Sea Fog> will prove the type of attention he gets at Chungmuro (central of Korea’s film industry). From his face being able to reflect different characters, the plausible (believable) voice, the sincerity in his approach on acting, a personality that doesn’t turn his effort into stress, to the flexible senses immersed in his body. The acting quality he possesses is so versatile….. Over everything else, acting is the most heart-fluttering thing to Park Yuchun.
However, when we asked him to say something about the period he is passing through now, the response he gave was “rope-walking period”. Just like how one cannot explain about falling in love, no words can express his emotions towards acting and music and hence this peek into his incomplete expression. We will also see how he uses humor to fill-up the silence during our conversation endlessly.
But his “rope-walking” did not come out as just ALL uneasiness. It is also walking by taking cautious steps with extreme focus. The long experience being a star, the road towards being an actor which started-off like destiny. The search for an answer while taking peeks within himself at a place where it looks familiar but yet not used to. In an era where everyone thinks about and tries to appear young, this man who so single-mindedly insists on being natural and best as he is, talked about the rules of strong players in long-term battles. This was 3 hours away from boarding his plane and our last day in Macao..

[FULL TRANS] Singles Magazine – 2014 April Issue – Park Yuchun’s Interview
SCENE #1 15th March、The 10 o’clock air in the morning
You can hardly tell the temparature was above 0 degrees when the March coldness sipped into our thick parkers (hoodies). There were about 50 staff and casts crowding in front of a building in Goyang City (T/N: 高陽市 a city north of South Korea). As if to dissolve the terrible cold when filming so early in the morning, the staff were even wearing 2 parkers.
This is the filming location for SBS Wed/Thurs drama < 3 Days >. It was already a hot topic (T/N: original Korean expression used here is HOT POTATO) even from the production stage. The genre is detective action “thriller”, rarely seen in Korean drama world. And there the producer of <Tree With Deep Roots> Shin Gyong Soo teamed-up with writer of <Sign> and <Ghosts> Kim Eun Hee, and led to this being labeled as “a drama that you can trust and watch”.
And on top of this solid platform we have the main casts Park Yuchun and Son Hyun Joo. It’s a story about a President security officer = Han Tae Kyung (Park Yuchun) who goes on to solve the mystery of the missing President = Lee Dong Hui (Son Hyun Joo) and the suspicious death of his father. The charisma of Tae Kyung, who protects the President with his life, can also be exuded from the stiff and rigid lines he speaks. Even when a gun was put in his face, he says happily “Go ahead and shoot. Do you think a security officer is afraid of guns?”.
The well-known soft and sad gaze of Park Yuchun turns into “passionate anger” when it meets the character Tae Kyung. I am not used to meeting “Tae Kyung” Park Yuchun but was looking forward to it.
I saw someone I know amongst the staff. Actor Park Yuchun. Close-up his face looked haggard and voice husky. Seems that after he finished filming yesterday morning and tried straightening his back on the bed for a while, his phone rang and he had to gather for filming again. Not just Yuchun. Staff who gathered for filming carried their tiredness from yesterday too, and were preparing indifferently the battle-field for another round of filming.
It was 12th and 13th March, that weekend after episode 3 and 4 were aired. There was a strange air of nervousness among the staff gathering to film episode 6. Special make-up team was again very busy. Another incident was about to hit Tae Kyung. In order to express that emotion well, rounds of rehearsals were done. For just 1 scene, lines were practised many times, and all the staff were holding onto their breath. And then everyone watched “Tae Kyung” crying and screamed. OK was given.

[TRANS] Singles Korea Magazine (July 2014 Issue) Interview Excerpt – Advantage of going drinking with seniors
What is the advantage of going out for drinks with seniors?
YC: Rather, it feels like we have many useless conversations. (laughs) But it feels very good. Those useless conversations were about life. At first because I was tensed, I said “I am going outside to smoke” but was scolded and told, “Just smoke here.” They told me that it’s an etiquette for me to smoke together. Until then, there were many things which I could not do. It seemed like even after turning 50, I would have to smoke in hiding. Later on, we really smoked together just like that. Although we are not able to contact each other often, it feels very good each time we meet up.

[TRANS] Singles Korea Magazine (July 2014 Issue) Excerpt: About ‘Sea Fog’
Q: It has been confirmed that will <Sea Fog> be shown on August.
A: I really don’t know how it will be presented. From my accent in speaking, my steps while walking to the position of my shoulders, I have been living for Dong Shik. After finish acting, I have no idea what I have been doing. Now I am Park YuChun so I don’t have to immerse myself into the movie to live as Park YuChun but living as Park YuChun, it will be just like occasionally forgetting what did I eat the day before, totally unable to recall. During the recording of ADR (automated dialogue replacement, or additional dialogue recording), I was also looking at the scenes but it felt so unfamiliar. I did not make any calculations, totally following my instincts while advancing. I was not sure whether it’s a good and bad thing so I felt abit uncomfortable.
Q: It seems like you have immersed yourself into the movie until this level.
A: Because this is my first movie, I had the worries about “the need to perform well”. I never had this thought once at all after stepping into the film set. I just naturally became the character in the movie. I have become comfortable after staying long enough on the ship. The nervous feelings of ‘this is the film set’ had totally disappeared. Few times filming down, there was once I lay down on the ropes tying at the back of the ship and suddenly felt that it is ok to live here around one month.
Q: Acting as a crew member of a smuggling ship in <Sea Fog>, it is a character that is quite challenging no matter physically or mentally. Previously you mentioned that you would be attracted towards challenging characters.
A: The most miraculous thing was, my mouth would spat out things non stop while filming. “Why do I need to film this. This is just so tiring. I’m going crazy soon. I want to act in romance drama even if the lines are more. I won’t have mental burden like right now too…” Because the burdens of physical and mental attacked at the same time, I had suffered a lot. But once the filming ended, nothing can replace that kind of excitement. It was tiring. I was tired until going to die soon but it left me irreplaceable charms. The choreography director once told me, “This is the meaning of movie.” That kind of charms, happiness and excitement seem like they really do exist.
Q: You can get along better with the elders?
A: The time spent together with the elders are more meaningful. It is a bit hard for me to be with friends in their early twenties (smile).
