JYJ fandom in Korea has been notably expanded across different generations of the young and old. Here are some saved (from a few months back) comments of ahjumma fans who ranted about Hotel girls. It is rare to see a fandom like this, isn’t it? :
“I have been, ever since following JYJ situation, shocked to experience many young people of this generation. They don’t seem to comprehend at all which side they naturally belong to when facing conflict between individual and systemic power, all the while the powerful is building up tall wall to fortify their territory using all possible resources. Either they have no courage which takes to challenge any obstacles in their own lives or they take it for granted that somebody will open doors necessary to cross over the wall. They carelessly join in justifying the tyranny of the powerful.
It’s your task to participate in breaking the shell of existing cartel embedded within social system. Though contribution by each of you might be no greater than picking a single brick out of the whole gigantic wall, if all of you participate together, it will eventually collapse. Couldn’t you at least reflect: Why should indi musicians who want to pursue their own colors of music hang around with empty stomach? Why should a few giant management companies monopolize all the broadcasting and music market as much to distort the whole music scene? What you girls are doing is no better than fighting over the left over flakes from the feast table of invincible system you blindly support out of jealousy toward three young men.
I assure you that once you accomplish pulling down the wall, you will be rewarded by more varieties and affluence of cultural experiences. Try to approach the matter with objective attitude reflecting on fundamental issues. Instead of carrying out meaningless battle over internet, trouble your mind more about individual right and dignity of human beings. This is a battle prepared for everyone of your generation.
Your generation is accepting proposition of materialism and monopoly without any resistance. Stop being proud of cheap cultural practice offering tribute to companies through organized fan club or worshiping slave master’s speech of this kind. Throw away passive attitude approving tyranny or being appreciative whatever is given to you by giant idol management companies. Instead, please think about why gate key of all cultural industry is disposed exclusively at their hand.
My generation had visible enemies, the fight against which was straightforward in a way. I am sorry for leaving this kind of corrupted system to you. Our fight, in our generation, was against political power while yours, in your generation, is a fight against the power of gigantic capital. This child (P/N the writer of this post)is feeding herself on left over residues of the powerful while offering the rightful portions destined for everyone in your generation to the power of capital. Please open your eyes.“
“I agree. The privileged wanting to maintain their system is a problem, of course. On the other hand, young people, who blindly worship and approve of systemic social injustice represented by a top winner’s monopoly is a disaster in terms of this country’s future. They seem to care nothing but immediate gains of individual“
“I also second the opinion. Notions of young people in this generation is becoming more and more infected by capitalism. They don’t bother thinking about the problem of system, but only push it over as individual conflict“
“Perhaps, parents in our generation is responsible for it, by not caring enough about disposition and active principle but driven by undesirable fever of education to be distinguished for accomplishments, thus blocking discerning insight of mind“
“I agree about the fight with the power of capital. Our society is now run by and subjected to the power of money. If it goes on this way, most of us will end up being enclosed inside the boundary created by the powerful capital without even knowing it is a prison or being able to see or hear what we want. In a society without varieties, people can’t truly enjoy being human beings. That’s why we support JYJ who strive to live as dignified human beings“
“Yes, please open your eyes to the issues of individual‘s right and dignity. This is really a fight of your generation. If you don’t fight now, your generation of 10s and 20s will end up being worthless consumers of cultural capital“
“It is quite depressing to think that it’s not only those girls, but the whole society is following the same trend. Otherwise, how could people elect a person like MB for the president of this country?“
“It appears hopeless to put any realistic sense into the minds of these girls. They will probably realize only when they experience a real society, and regret how dangerous it was to absorb what was given to them without discerning criticism“
“I wish, for the future, a society in which common sense and principle are universally valued so that my own children, no matter which side they belong, the weak or the strong, can live with courage not to allow abuse of power. That’s why I encourage people to pay attentions to and think about the issue of JYJ and SM“

THIS!!!
Excellent words. I agree with everyone of them. We have to open our eyes, no matter where we live, and fight against tyranny, abuse of power and corruption in all their forms. We have to keep a clear mind and accurate thoughts, and we definitely have to think and to act justly.
¡JYJ FIGHTING! ¡TRUTH FIGHTING!
Why should a few giant management companies monopolize all the broadcasting and music market as much to distort the whole music scene?
THIS!
ahumma fans I love you!
We need to face the ugly reality and try to fight against it! It´s enough of all this abbuse! ><
Cool isn’t it?! Our boys are getting support from every level!
I wanna buy them all a drink. 😀 It would a pleasure to share a table with these women.
“It appears hopeless to put any realistic sense into the minds of these girls. They will probably realize only when they experience a real society, and regret how dangerous it was to absorb what was given to them without discerning criticism”
^Oh I so agree with this. When I think of HoTels and their existence…I consider their minds to be young and inexperienced. They just don’t seem to have that propensity to critically think about the information they’re given. All they do is take things at face value or stubbornly look at a situation from one angle without considering other factors.
You can’t live your life blindly like this. It’s quite sad.
I really hope most of them are young and inexperienced. Because if they’re not and they still think and act the way they do, then it really is quite sad.
these girls will realised their mistakes
when they enter the real world…
the office-politic, the back-stabbing
and stepping on others to reach the top
and let’s see if they will be singing the same tune
when they work so hard but at the end of the month
they dont get their salary. is it ok then for them
to still remain working in the same place?
will they call themselves betrayer if they
change workplace?
This is the best article I’ve read so far. Everything is explained so throughly. Now only if these young adults read this, and take the time to think about what was said. Here in the US there is a boycott going on against ABC network regarding the cancellation of 2 long running soap operas. These fans are serious and will not watch ABC network because of the cancellation. It won’t change the networks minds as they are no longer reaping big benefits from these soaps, but they will lose alot of viewers who will change channels and not watch their programming anymore. Too bad something like this doesn’t happen in Korea, it would help JYJ so much.
I hope those childish narrow minded people can read and understand this opinion from a learned matured individual who sees things in a wider perspective. Those who hate JYJ for leaving sm/and the other 2, they are enraged because there’s no more that 5 amazing guys harmonizing together, just that, then JYJ becomes the ungrateful, traitors or even geese …
“Yes, please open your eyes to the issues of individual‘s right and dignity.” THIS
“It appears hopeless to put any realistic sense into the minds of these girls. They will probably realize only when they experience a real society.. ” when they’ll be working ( with an aching back, hands and feet getting numb, eyes getting teary, holding back the thirst, hunger or even going to the restroom because you are under a timer, can’t leave the workplace…then when payday comes you’re unsatisfied with the figures on the “netpay” …that’s the time you’ll understand JYJ more.
100% agree!
agree
¡HI, Miaw! ¿How are you?
@shuheilove
i’m fine just lil bit tired coz for two days, at saturday i must meet my friend until afternoon and yesterday w/ my mother until night in row
how about you ?
yeah… are u good now Miaw?
wow those are powerful words! yeah for them speaking up even though the ones who need to reflect on them probably won’t learn a thing.
Honestly everything that they have stated can be said for most of the young people all over the world. Most of the people in our generation only care about getting immediate gratification and money. I mean where are the values that our parents have installed in us? Hard work, respect and loving ourselves, not worshiping idols or becoming aggressive against others who don’t agree with our “idols” ideas. Also what has happened to real, meaningful music? The time when a song meant something, this is why I don’t follow K-pop anymore and also why I support JYJ. JYJ make music with meaning and don’t want to just get immediate gratification, they want freedom and the ability to live as human beings not controlled by a greater power. I hope other people will realize this one day.
If I could requote the entire entry, all I can say is … THAT! I absolutly agree. They couldn’t have worded it any better.
There is so much wisdom coming from these statements. These women are putting it out there for anyone who wants to use whatever critical thinking skills they possess.
If one allows others to guide you, and you don’t think for yourself, you will be at the mercy of those who do not have your best interests at heart. Before you know it, you will be surrounded by walls so tall, you will never be able to climb over them. At the very least you will not know how to face real danger when it approaches because you haven’t learned how to defend yourself. Anyone can do anything to you, and you will have nowhere, or no one to turn to.
Allowing anyone to have that kind of power over you is unthinkable. Thank goodness JYJ had the courage and presence of mind to begin taking down that wall.
I salute you ladies all, for giving voice to a powerful message.
Hello Mommie~! *hugs*
This article actually reminds of my late mother. She always told us not to take a bath during late nights because it’s eventually going to give us problems when we grow older. And damn… It seems she’s right.
Almost always, when adults/older/wiser people tell kids what to do, their words are just brushed aside. And almost always, those kids who didn’t listen find themselves in deep sh*t. And that’s when they tell themselves, “Crap, Mom was right.”
I actually salute JYJ’s parents for the way they have raised our boys. From what my older sister has been telling me, there are a lot of parents in Korea who are still very traditional and they are usually the ones who bring destruction to their own kids by forcing them to do cram school, extra lessons of music or arts, night classes, just to name a few.
JYJ’s parents I’m seeing have seen a lot in their lifetime that they raised these three so that they are still able to follow Korean culture and be open-minded at the same time.
(My sister has been teaching Phone English to Koreans for some 4+ yrs now and she’s interacted with a lot of Koreans so she could come up with some of her observations about their culture and society.)
wow, truely amazing! the power of thinking from these words. i totally respect these ahjummas.
Kudos ahjumma fans, who are really wise. Its a pity if those girls couldnt comprehend the ahjumma’s statement. Real pity.
Hi everyone!!! Have you gals read about this FB website on “ANTI SM ENTERTAINMENT & LEE SOO MAN” I got this article from Twitter…
I was shocked !!! Were they true? What SME & LSM did to the boys under them … G.O.D, HOT, SHINWA, DBSK5 & now even SHINEE….If the news were true…then so sad for the idols under SME….The pathetic thing was, I read on KBS NEWS, the SME stock shares was earning a lot this year compared to last year….WHAT A SAD THING !!!Those people are HYPOCRITES….
i think some of that information is false
i would take that article with a grain of salt
@ JUNO
If it’s not true, then it’s a relief….But I think some parts were true…
@ Jaejoong’s nyx
I hope I was wrong about the picture….
There was a picture of JJ wounded on his cheek or under the eyes, a bit blurred ….Looking at the picture… GOSH !!! I cried….All these years, these boys had been tortured like hell….I’m so happy finally JYJ got out from “SME’s JAIL”
you serious? got the link to the pic? o.O;
Standing ovation
Wow…now I know what’s the difference between girls and ahjummas…
i think the ahjummas are right in that this generation has had it too easy. most of us grew up in relative affluence, and never had to fight for our basic needs (like food, shelter, or even survival). to us, war stories are just that – stories. the korean war, wwi, wwii are just entries in our history textbooks that we cringe over, but can never truly understand. even today, many of us are emotionally detached from the situation in afghanistan.
perhaps JYJ’s struggle depicts the ‘war’ of our generation. like the ahjummas said, our enemy isn’t tangible or physical (even tho LSM is doing an awesome job portraying hilter, in this analogy). our enemy is the exploitation of capitalism. the distortion of exactly what makes our free world free. and even though capitalism is the reason why we enjoy our relative affluence and worry-free existence, it has also spoilt us. we’re now so self-centred that we can’t see beyond our own whims and fancies, and we demand instant gratification.
and for our own selfish gratification – disguised as love for 5txvq – we turn our eyes away from the obvious tyranny and injustice of this situation. and in doing so, we condone the exploitation of capitalism.
because of our silence, because we didn’t stand up and say ‘no’ when all this started, we have created the opportunity for korean entertainment companies to band together. United Asia Management is our own doing.
we’re all guilty *hangs head in shame*
The situation in S.Korea isn’t really surprising. The generation of these ladies is far different from that of the new one. I read this article. It is a nice intro into understanding this new Korea. ——->
http://www.eastwestcenter.org/news-center/east-west-wire/shinsedae-conservative-attitudes-of-a-new-generation-in-south-korea-and-the-impact-on-the-korean-presidential-election/
This new gen. is known as the Shinsedae generation. Please read this article. I think it describes the apathy of the younger people towards JYJ’s situation (not all of them of course but a good deal of them.)
If you notice, the courts and the media who support the boys are of the older generations.
Salut! To the ahjumma fan who wrote this eloquent piece! I just came back from a week of vacation and I am glad this was one of the entries I chose to read first. I hope all fans in the frontlines (Korea and Japan) do get a wake up call from this.
To all of us, hwaiting!
