[NEWS] International Consumers of Hallyu Release Official Statement on the KBS Incident
Following the Manila Bulletin (see here), Koreaboo covered the KBS incident and the Official Statement of the International Consumers of Hallyu for Justice and the Rule of Law (see here).
International fans issue petition against KBS
Recently, major Korean TV station, KBS, released an official statement that shed light on their reasons for not allowing JYJ on KBS broadcasts. In response, JYJ’s agency, CJES Entertainment, also released a statement and expressed their disappointment towards KBS. Additionally, international fans from all over the world such as the Philippines, Germany, Malaysia, Turkey, Finland, United Kingdom, and more issued a petition against the TV station’s unjustified statement. The petition consisted of the following:
“We – as international consumers of the Korean Wave, supporters of JYJ, and citizens of the world that value justice and the rule of law – hereby condemn the Korean Broadcasting System (hereafter, ‘KBS’) on 18 May, 2011 regarding its reasons to prohibit JYJ from appearing on ‘Music Bank’ and other such entertainment programs.”
“Ultimately, any attempt by KBS to use the exclusive contract and the lawsuit between JYJ and SM Entertainment as a justification for prohibiting JYJ’s media appearances run contrary to the explicit mandate of the Court and is a mischaracterization.” Read More →
[NEWS] Chung Chanwoo of CulTwo Radio Follows Junsu
Chung Chanwoo “JYJ Kim Junsu Who is Sore in His Heart Over Restrictions on Broadcast Appearances, Take Heart!”
I (the reporter) asked whether there is a unique relationship among Chung Chanwoo (of the well-known talk radio show CulTwo) followers of around 50,000.
He introduced Kim Junsu—he follows Kim Junsu and he follows him back. On the 19th, the broadcast scene was buzzing with the problem of JYJ being restricted from appearing on KBS. On that day, Kim Junsu tweeted this to comfort fans: “I wake up and there are articles about this and that a bit…! Let’s all take strength a bit more ^^ Okay!? Let’s not be sad… one day they will understand and trust us^^ If we do not let go of each other until that day, with only that we are happy~ Thank you always!” At this, Chung Chanwoo followed him, leaving a supportive message of: Take heart, Junsu. This is CulTwo’s Chanwoo Hyung. At this Kim Junsu answered by following him back.
Chung Chanwoo laughed, saying: “There are many stars on twitter but in fact you come to talk to the fans more. I was happy to become a Twitter friend of Kim Junsu but I am a bit disappointed that I was buried in his numerous mentions.”
[NEWS] SM’s Lee SooMan’s Corruption Charges and Being Put on Interpol’s Wanted List (2003 Article)
This article is from June of 2003. It has been translated only recently, however. Read on for the charges of Lee Soo Man and how he was placed on the Interpol Watch List… only to be released in a day by Korean authorities. It is particularly distressing how Korea simply replaced its chief prosecutor who was pursuing this case.
Sooman Lee, Sewon Seo
Key Figures in Investigation on Corruption in Entertainment Industry Returned after Fleeing
Sooman Lee and Sewon Seo, key suspects in the investigation on corruption in the entertainment business, who brought the investigation to a standstill when they fled the country and were subsequently placed on Interpol’s Wanted List, finally returned to Korea. Thus, people expected that the case, which had been suspended for six month, would resume, but the result came to nothing. Sewon Seo had delayed a summons of the Prosecutor’s Office on grounds of poor health, and Sooman Lee, who was summoned right after his re-entry, was allowed to go back home in a day. Although the Public Prosecutor, for now, states that his office will decide whether or not to issue a warrant for Sooman Lee and Sewon Seo’s arrest after going through the enormous amount of data received and further investigation, the case seems to be closed without any further pursuit. [TRANS] JYJ Members Talk About Their Musical Tastes, Favorite Songs, Music Videos
Asia’s Star JYJ, Their Tastes
The “Performances of a Lifetime” that Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, and Kim Junsu Picked.
It is said that if one cannot avoid it, then to enjoy the ride. The recent direction of JYJ (Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, and Kim Junsu) is exactly like that. As soon as they gathered, without sparing a moment for a breather, they released their first world wide album “The Beginning” which they put in their own effort, and also has stepped out for a world tour in six months. Perhaps due to the inborn qualities and a long-term training, even if it is a short period they have not stepped out of line and is continuing their music activities smoothly. However, this direction which looks to be with ease form the outside is actually as fierce as a wild animal that fights for its survival with tooth and nail.

[EDITORIAL] 110520 KBS, can they keep their promise with JYJ?
T/N: The following is a good article about one of the key issues at stake here–the public’s right to demand, see, and judge for themselves an artist. What gave the national broadcasting companies (which are supposedly “public” companies and thus receive taxes paid Korean citizens, BTW) the right to arbitrary censor artists they deemed “might make someone angry?” Please read 🙂

The ironical situation of Park Yuchun’s casting in MBC drama “Miss Ripley” and his inability to appear on MBC entertainment programs at the same time… the situation arising from KBS’s restraint of letting JYJ on broadcasts… amongst Korean idols, there isn’t anyone who has as many controversies as JYJ.
There isn’t a single musical program who will allow JYJ to stand on stage, and although they say there aren’t any restrictions, we also cannot find programs trying to let JYJ on the air.
There isn’t direct evidence for the claim that SM Entertainment, JYJ’s ex-management company, has pressured the broadcasting companies in any way. However, it’s also true that all broadcasting companies are reluctant to allow JYJ, the group at the center of the controversy, on stage.
JYJ is being reviewed as having proposed a new model for idols. Unlike other idols who set their looks at their head, [JYJ] have set their singing abilities as their foundation and their performances and singing have achieved steady improvement. Furthermore, each member’s musical capabilities are also excellent and thus the members are showing off their abilities in songwriting, and they are being recognized as real artists beyond idol singers, with JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong even acting as the director for the World Tour.
