Eric – Park Yoochun. Strategy of Gathering Attention As Similar Figures, as New and Old Idol Stars?
The new and old idol stars Eric and Park Yoochun, who have come to stsand as competitors in the Monday-Tuesday drama scene, has gathered eyes with strategies of gathering attention that are similar.
In KBS 2’s Spy Myungwol that begun on the 11th, Eric took on the role of the Korean Wave star Kang Woo. As this is his comeback piece after he came back from the military, he showed off a variety of appeals in order to make his presence carved in strongly with the drama fans. In the location scene of the splendied Singapore, he utilized his experience of having lived in the US to make the ears of the fans pique with fluent English lines. He also showed off skills in dancing in the scene in which he practices dancing with back dancers. Further he showed off a shower scene and tried to capture the female heart with a muscular upper body.
Coincidentally, JYJ’s Park Yoochun of the MBC Miss Ripley from the same time slot also stepped up with a similar strategy. Park Yoochun who also grew up in the US in his young days utilized his English skills in a scene in which he gives a speech in English in a group meeting/conference in the drama. He also finished the image of him struggling over Zhang Miri with a showre scene.
The winner in ratings in this first conflict of the new and old idol stars was Park Yoochun. Miss Ripley has stepped out as the leader in Monday-Tuesday dramas and Spy Myungwol started as the last place in the same time slot with 9.6%. The other competitor, SBS’s Warrior Paek Dongsu, recorded 12.7%.

Awwwwww….. Sorry, Eric…. (not really)
Although I did like you in “Strongest Chill Woo..” (I liked Yoo Ah In ever better, though….oops, sorry again…)
🙂
love them both!
I knew it would be just a matter of time before people started comparing these two–especially now that Eric is back in action (YAY! I missed him!). I wish they were closer though. I’ve never heard Eric talk about Chunface >__<
I'm so glad Ripley is pulling in the ratings at almost 20% though (sorry, Eric ^^)…shows the power of the Yoochun now that he's been given more screen time as well as the plot getting good (feel sorry for Hye-jung and KSW though since they've had less screen time from the start of the Dark Yoohyun)
Yay for sunbaes and hoobae similarities? 😀
eric actually mentioned chun in a recent interview. 🙂 iirc, he listed yoochun as one of the idol-turned-actors that he’s looking out for. idk how particularly close he is to yoochun, but i wouldn’t be surprised if he was considering the amount of shinhwa memebers that were/are still close to jyj.
oooh. interesting ^^ Thanks!
Good to know.
Yeah. I’m hoping for that as well. They were still there when they debuted and training as well so…who knows.
I’m glad ^^
@Bluefyre
In all seriousness now, Eric Moon is a really wonderful actor. He can have a career LONG after his “idol” days are over. His potential was all too clear in “Strongest Chill Woo.” I’m going to be starting “Spy Myung Wol” as soon as tomorrow. It looks good and I’m looking forward to it. I’ll report back how it’s going. Keep in mind, I’m also watching “Emperor Of The Sea” and the last 3 episodes of “Sunao Ne Narenakute” so it won’t be fast and furious, but I will report as info develops.
🙂

Agreed. Loved him Que Sera Sera. He played a jerk, but played him well. I watched the first ep. of “Spy Myung Wol” last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it! A really fun summer drama, I recommend it!
@Bluefyre
“Yay for sunbaes and hoobae similarities?”
Dumb question, I know, but I’m not from around here….. what does “hoobae” mean?
It’s the opposite of sunbae–senior/person with more experience in an area/longer time in something/not necessarily older; a hoobae–person under the sunbae/less experienced/less time with or in something/not necessarily younger than a sunbae they could be younger or older.
It’s basically one of those handles that indicate how big a role the hierarchy system has in Korea. I’m not sure if hierarchy is the right word I’m looking for. You know the system where if you’ve been there longer then you have the upper hand or have more influence, etc. They had to have entries for that in their vocabulary. Amazing. 😀
@Bluefyre
“It’s basically one of those handles that indicate how big a role the hierarchy system has in Korea.”
Got it. Thanks for the in-depth definition. So I’m guessin’ that Jaejoong is the hoobae of hoobaes on ‘Protect The Boss” right? Well, that’s OK. My new motto is “Protect The Hoobaes!”
Yep. You got it 😉
Haha!! Yeah! Brilliant! Protect the hoobaes! Nice ring to it. 😀 lmao
ahhh, the best leader in kpop and the best forehead in kpop. 😛 i’ve always thought that they were similar. it would be awesome to see them play against each other in a drama.
I think once Ms Ripley is finished and Eric doesn’t have to have Chunnie as a competitor, he’ll get better ratings. I also think when Jae’s “Protect the Boss” drama starts~~~forget about it!! ^_~ hopefully it’s not on at the same time and date!! ^_~
Nope. They’re in different times. Protect the Boss will take the place of City Hunter in Wed/Thurs. Myungwol The Spy is in the Mon/Tues same as Miss Ripley. So no direct competition.
hi *.~
they’re not on the same time slot yey! the time slot competitor of “protect the boss” will be “the princess’ man” w/c is a period tragic love story and “heartstrings”…I hope this will not change (‘(“)
…except Eric seriously sucks at acting. Not bashing him because he’s being compared to our Chun, but because I couldn’t finish an episode of Spy Myungwol without scoffing whenever he over-acted everything. ㅡㅡ
I think he’s actually playing Kang Woo well in Myungwol the Spy. For me, the over-acting actually suited the tone of the drama, considering the world it created was an exaggeration of itself.
But to each his/her own. ^_^
@Aki
“For me, the over-acting actually suited the tone of the drama, considering the world it created was an exaggeration of itself.”
Over-acting?? You want to talk over-acting!!?? How about Rain, who is a marvelous actor, in “Runaway: Plan B”??
Honestly, I couldn’t get past the second episode, and I LOVED him in “A Love To Kill” ; it’s still firmly on the Top 5 Best Contemporary Dramas for me.
There are a lot of factors in play, the director, the script, the over-all tone of the drama. I’m going to give Eric’s new one a decent shot. I’ll get back to you as news develops…..
I couldn’t get past five minutes of Runaway Plan B *grimaces.* It’s not that Eric is over-acting in Myungwol, it’s that the drama itself is an exaggeration, lol. I don’t think exaggeration is the right term, but Myungwol is the type of drama that doesn’t take itself seriously. The world it created is somewhat wacky and a bit ridiculous, but still very enjoyable. Some of the over-acting, I think Eric intentionally does for his role as a Hallyu Star.
I’m actually looking forward to your take on Myungwol. For me, it’s fun and wacky so far. ^_^
@Aki

I also think he’s playing the character well. It seems very “tongue in cheek.” A wink to the audience for those that know his background as a Shinhwa member. A parody or caricature if you will.
you should watch que sera sera
Gotta agreed with Juno. Eric-sama did great in that.
as i love chunnie, i know…Eric..he is good..hope he will sucess in this one too….!!
Go Chunnie…Go Miss Ripley 🙂
Two more Eps to go…
